Perseus Tamed

Perseus is a problem because of the number of books. I don't want to see them unless I want to. So this is a way to make that happen. If you make a collection like this you do not have to see Perseus or Papyri which can be in the way.

The second screen shot shows that you can drag and drop the tab for the collection into favorites. Then all that you need to do is click on it to open the collection. You then have similar functionality as the Library window. If you want to further filter add parans around the rule and filter away.

You might want to take a closer look at this collection because it has more than just Perseus and papyri. I do not know how you are using your collections, but only putting these items into a collection will not hide them.

Yes, subject:pap picks up these two works which you might not want excluded:

the Monograph Saint Bernard on Consideration (because the subject contains "Papacy")
the Lexicon Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament (because the subject contains "Manuscripts, Greek (Papyri)")

I do not know how you are using your collections, but only putting these items into a collection will not hide them.

If you make a collection of everything BUT the items you want to exclude, which is what Ud Laugh 2 is doing, then you can use that as your basic collection to search in and avoid getting hits in those works. (You could also use it for Passage Guides.) That seems to be the goal here, and it seems like a fine way to omit these works most of the time but still have them available in case you wanted to look in them. Hiding them would take them out of your library completely.

Try changing subject:pap to something more specific that will still match all the papyri in your library, for example perhaps subject:"Manuscripts (Papyri)" will work. I can't seem to unhide other papyri in my library right now to test whether that will exclude all the papyri. But at least it won't match the lexicon I mentioned, nor any resource that has a subject containing Papacy or Papal or Epaphras, etc. If you have other papyri that don't have the subject Manuscripts (Papyri) then figure out a unique subject line which they contain and add it after a comma separator (within parentheses) to the subject filter, for example:

subject:("Manuscripts (Papyri)", "some other papyri subject")

Yes, that's the same thing. Putting parentheses around the outside of the filter doesn't change its effect; but it does set you up to be able to add other parameters to it if you choose later. I'm not sure what UL2's intent was.

When I used unhide on my papyri and Perseus it took about a week before it all showed up. It seemed to do better during week days during business hours. I wonder if it is not completely automatic.

I've had other times when it worked automatically right away (with a few Perseus titles I was unhiding recently). So it seems to be pretty random whether it works or not, and probably needs some event to trigger a re-download. I'm just not sure what that event is. New metadata being received? An index being rebuilt? Catalog being updated?

OK, I finally managed to unhide the other papyri and there's another subject you'd want to add to that collection if you were trying to exclude papyri, since this one is included in Perseus: "Manuscripts--Ancient--Papyri". Thus a corrected version of my suggestion would be to have the subject part of your rule look like this:

subject:("Manuscripts (Papyri)", "Manuscripts--Ancient--Papyri")

Thanks Rosie! This is what I have now and it seems to work well. If it works for your much larger library then it is what I had in mind.
