Controlling what pane a resource opens in

In general it is very unpredictable what pane will be chosen when I open a resource. Is there any way to control this? It is cumbersome to open a resource, then find where it went (the visual cue does not always appear to tell me) and then the drag the resource where I want it originally. I would prefer that it go into the active pane or at least that that be a Settings option.

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but you can always preempt the panel choosing behavior by dragging the link to your desired pane (it will open there).

There is also the option on the panel menu (the book cover in the upper-right of a resource) to "Send hyperlinks here" which will attempt to open any clicked links in that resource before opening a new one.

Yes. For me this is worse than L3 because I tend to forget where a resource is and resort to opening it via the Command bar!

The way it is supposed to work is that if you have a pane containing Bibles, new Bibles opened will go to that pane. If you have one containing commentaries, new commentaries will go there. What I don't know is how it determines it if 1)there is a Bible and commentary in the same pane. I'm guessing it goes by the tab on the furthest Right or the last tab opened 2) there are two panes that contain commentaries. I'm guessing its by the last pane that was used. I have found in general that this works.

I protested this inability in L4 in the beta trails. This is one change from L3 that I dearly miss! For instance, in L3 I could designate a pane as my commentary pane, link it to the Bible pane and each sunsequent commentary I opened would automatically open in that pane and be linked to my active bible. I soooo miss this capability. It's too intuitive to deny its usefulness! Why can't we go back to this ability? I don't want to go back to Egypt... just go get something we left there! (Sorry that was a reference to an earlier, hilarious post.)

Logos, can we reconsider this? Can we at least have an option to make this setting? Please!

While I understand the logic behind the new system, I'll add my voice to being able to define a pane as "the commentary" pane. That way if I have a Bible opened in it as well it won't confuse things and I'll now where to go.

If I could voice how I would like to see this implemented I would suggest that Right clicking between the + and X of a pane would show a drop-down of all the data types with a checkbox beside each. You can click as many data types as you want, but selecting a type in one pane removes the selection from all other panes. If no pane is set up for a given type, that type is opened according to the currently set default. This keeps the option out of view for those who don't care about it, but allows easy access for those who cared enough about the function to seek out how to do it.

Yes. If I open a commentary from a passage guide, any other commentary I open from that passage guide should open in the same tab. I do really miss this. Things are getting un-weilding with 50 commentaries opening.

Agreed. I think that is far more intuitive. Either that or clicking the X brings a drop-down that says Close current/Close all.

I, too, think that each tab having it's own X is far more intuitive. Current OS design in Windows browsers, where we typically see tabbed design, uses this system. It is jarring each time I try to close a tab after being conditioned to use the X on the tab itself, to have to go find the other X.

Earth-shattering? No. But good design is good design.

This rarely works. e.g.

I selected the upper middle pane for 'Send hyperlinks here'. Then i select the upper left pane to view something. Next i select 'Tools -> Program settings'. Guess where it opens it (in the upper left pane).

Next (still with the upper middle pane designated as where to send hyperlinks) i open Library and have a book open (monogram), it sends it to the lower pane (which is all commentaries).

so when opening books from my library there is no telling where it will open. Sometimes it isn't obvious where it put it. Then i have to drag it where i want it. This does disrupt my train of thought.

Oh yea, when you select a tab to be opened in a floating window, all bets are off to where it will land when you select dock it.

Sorry for the complaining, but i hope that feedback from users will guide future changes.

We'd like to improve the logic so that it makes better guesses. I'm open to UI to have you specify where things should go, but I'm reluctant to have it driven by data type, because we're trying to hide that level of complexity.

Somewhat, because I already have much more open resources than L3 and do not wish to add more windows which I will close fairly quickly.

I follow a pattern of having search tabs in the left pane and wanting associated resources to open in the middle pane, even if the resource is already open in the left (search results) pane. When i open a resource from Library I want it in the opposite pane. When i open via the Command bar I wouldn't mind some intelligence being applied eg. I keep Reverse interlinears in the right pane, normal Interlinears in the left pane, lexicons in the left pane, and dictionaries/commentaries in the right pane because I open guides in the left pane!

If that can be accommodated it is 98% of my needs!

I guess for me; replacing data types is the key...commentary replaces commentary, english bible replaces english bible, and so on.

With the option to "open in new tab" not being the default behavior..

I think that a the resource type should be weighted a little more heavily in the logic and the manual placement should be remembered as a vote: system training as it were.

Personally I like the new tab system and don't mind if a few things get opened where I don't want them, moving tabs is easy and waaaaaaay better than the window system in LDLS (especially since nothing gets hidden in the rear). My only complaint is that it seems like new resources get opened in a floating window too much, I would prefer having them open to the main window always, I can then move them to the floating pane if I want.

It would be nice as well, unless I have missed it, to be able to start with a blank work space. Then within that blank workspaces have empty boxes depending on your general layout that you chose to start filling up with resources.

And if i have a window set with 'Send hyperlinks here' , then set another window with 'Send hyperlinks here' it should remove the setting of 'Send hyperlinks here' from the previous. (i.e. only one window can have this set at a time. The system probably already does this).

In other words, use an improved version of your smart destination window placement when the user has not tried to override placement. But when the user overrides placement, follow their request.

I like the new behavior since I don't mind so many open resources, but (and there always is one there are performance issues on older hardware once too many tabs are open. Also, the old L3 habit of having one resource open, like a Bible, then rolling through all my favorite Bibles in the same pane with the arrow keys is greatly missed. I know PRAs have been slated to return (thank you) but I thought I would mention it in this context because it was a useful way to take contain system load.

A trainable system sounds interesting. I like the idea but I confess to often dragging a resource to the first handy pane, so I would need training too. How would mistraining be handled? Can a 'reset to default' be implemented on a per-resource basis or does that stray too far into complexity?

On the home page click "customize" in the lower left corner and then unclick the "Show home page at Startup." You can also have it re-open to the last layout you were in, if you unclick that and close with open resources.

Sorry but absolutely yes. I don't necessarily like it being forced to lower right as in v. 3, but I do not want to open 12 commentaries at a time. I don't work that way. I find it is best go go all the way through the passage in a commentary and then go back. You get repetition this way.

Also another v.3 behavior I like is a Passage guide that opens the preferred bible too.

Hyperlinks are a different matter than opening a book. A hyperlink is if you click on a Bible reference in a commentary and you want a particular Bible to show the passage.

I have one window open for English Bible, another for Greek/Hebrew, another for commentaries, another for searches, another for lexicons, etc. I want a new commentary to go into the commentary window, which it usually does. I think that is the basic plan. But it is wierd how sometimes a new Bible or commentary opens in the Information window, which is too narrow to be of much use.

A simple solution for where windows open - have an option for selecting manually instead of (or in addition to) learning (as Bob P mentioned earlier in the thread). Simply click on the pane where you want the next resource to open, hold down a key and click on the link to force it open there. Sounds simple enough...

As for the X to close a single resource, use the same idea. Clicking the X would close just a single resource while holding the key X and clicking X in the pane would close the whole pane and all resources.

On the home page, click the Customize button on the lower left and uncheck the "Show Home Page at Start Up" However you close L4 then it will open that way - blank or with the layout you had when you closed.

I may be fantasizing, but it seems to me, that when I make a window active (just click on it) and then open a resource, it goes to the active window. If I want a resource in a different place, I can move it or else, click on that window to become active and then select a resource, which opens in THAT window.

Am I just dreaming, or did this actually work? I am thinking it did work for me.

Personallly, I like that commentaries open up next to other open commentaries in that panel. I can easily click them off if I am done, but I like seeing which ones I have opened. I also like being able to use the title bar (? right description?) to click on the exact resource, rather than scrolling through several, trying to remember where things were. For that matter, you can just scroll through an open commentary if you have prioritized (or "prioritised" for my non-USA friends . . . ) and you will be taken to your next prioritized commentary.

It would seem simple to have a setting option: "open new resource in separate tab" or "open new resource over current resource" (however it is worded)

Yes, I believe so. I have only been using Logos 4 for a few days and
truly miss the ability to have commentaries replace one another in a
window as I am searching through them. Opening up a new window each
time is problematic in that I have to go back through to close them.

that is a bit of a pane . . . (sic) . . . especially if a resource is immediately non-useable. but I do like to refer back and forth at times between commentaries. Perhaps have the option to open in new tab.. . . which we do in a sense if we click on the "+" tab--and choose from the prioritized commentary list.

I don't want to automatically have it replace. I am often in a commentary--and not done with it--and I want to get some other input from another commentary, I don't want it replacing, I want it either in another tab in teh same pane or perhaps to a new pane, which I can easily set up.

I think the answer is to have options on how a new commentary is opened. By right-clicking on the commentary in the passage guide (or key sequences) give us the options "open in new pane" "open as new tab in commentary pane" or "over-write tab in commentary pane"

Certainly remembering where a resource was last time around would be good. Yesterday I closed a resource by mistake then immediately reopened it, but it appeared in a different pane.

I've got a couple of different solutions for this issue than have been mentioned thus far (at least as far as I can tell from my quick glance at this thread, please forgive me if someone has already mentioned these and I missed it).

Now that the Parallel resource icon allows switching between parallel resources within a tab, I think a better use of the + button would be to open an instance of the library search tool in the pane instead of an additional choice of parallel resources.

That way, it would be possible to specify whatever resource you wanted to open in whatever pane you wanted to open it.

Of course, the library or Parallel resources could be chosen by right clicking on the + button if there were enough need for both.

Another idea might be to simply force resources opened in the command line to go to the pane that is currently selected as the focused pane.
The panes currently allow you to change their focus by clicking on a tab in the pane. Pane focus is currently indicated by a distinctive drop shadow.

I think either of these ideas would be preferable to the current solution. I'm not sure any inherent logic of the program would ever be able to predict the peculiarities of where I want a resource to open.

See where is gets tough is for people like me I have a seperate floating panel for each of those things. My word study pane opens up my word study books with my commentary. I think those should stay with my word study pane, or open in a new pane all together.It would probably work if similar resources were tagged with the same tag. Grammar books open with other grammar books and so on. Maybe version 4 just needs to know the type of resource to allocate it in its own pane. I am just guessing... maybe it already knows what type of resource it is... I have a pane just for my systematic theology book and those books seem to open in the right pane.

I thought "send hyperlinks here" would do the trick. It often does not, new tabs seem to open in random spots.

"send hyperlinks here" should be the end all and override anything else.... [:(]
