SUGG: Ability to choose Note-File on Right-Click Menu

I have a few different note files (in version 3 I had tons). One's for my running commentary, another is for teaching prep, and still another is a journal. I like'd in version 3 how you could pick from the right-click menu which note file to add your annotation to. It is somewhat annoying in version 4 how I'm only given the last-opened note file (and clipping file) as an option on the right-click menu.

Please add the ability to choose from among multiple note files.

Ditto. There's another suggestion around here about flyout menus for selecting which clippings file to add to. A flyout in the current place where it says the last named note would be a good solution.

I agree for notes and clippings. As i read through a passage I find different topics that I want to make notes/take clippings on. I don't just keep finding more of the same. So, please allow me to right click and select which note/clipping file to put it in. Now, if I change (even if there are several open at the time) I have a long process to change files and have to remember which I was last in, or waste time right clicking and cancelling.

This was intentional; we felt that the popup menus with popup menus with popup menus were too difficult to use, and made the "95% case" too difficult.

Is there a compromise that makes sense? Maybe instead of listing every note file and every clippings file, we could just list the open ones? Then if you want to use three simultaneously, you can open three and then we offer three to send things to? But if none are open, just the last used one? Or do you wan the popups with popups?

I like this. I wouldn't want to see every file in the system on the menu. Using only the open ones would allow me to control which ones show up on the menu. And, of course, default to the last open one, if none are open.

Well, I really don't mind multiple popups, but I'm an extreme case apparently.

(A) At the moment, there is a lot of blank space on those menus, you could put the last 3-5 opened of each there.

(B) OR, what about this: Put my last 1-3 used note/clipping file(s) there, with a link to "other note file" / "Other clipping file" if I hover over the link, THEN the flyouts come out.

I agree with Trey and think Thomas has a good suggestion, especially if implemented like Phil's - menus within the right click dialog.

I don't like the just what is open because if I start reading something - say an article in a journal or a chapter in a book, I have no idea what issues will be dealt with or what ideas I've been ruminating on - in my notes - until I get there. Having some way to get to my pick through my notes from a right click would be nice.

I have notes that are listed by verse, but with a tag could be indexed by subject and vice versa. As I develop my notes, I'll have to work at keeping them organized, but given that I do that, a pop-up within a pop-up would be useful. I haven't found a good way to organize/link the notes from the various places I can create them. If that is in L4, then that structure could be used. If not, then I think it might have to be implemented first.

Listing open note files is less efficient than listing the most recently used. I don't want to have to open a note file in order to create a new post - I like to keep my L4 layout as simple as possible.

I'd like some way to select note files\clipping files from the right click menu.

I would like to amend my thoughts to change to being able to send to opened note files (or clippings files). This allows me to control whci files I can send to.

As I study I may want to be able to send to 5 files. If the list is limited to only the last 3 or 4 opened, then i will have to keep opening and closing files to be able to send notes to the files with which I want to work.

I have found that I want to be able to NOT allow note files to show - especially because I do a lot of selection notes and they have, by default, a highlight and most of the time, I don't want this highlight to show. I guess I could use clipping files but then I can't make them show as pop-ups in the text. So, I would prefer to work in the notes files and have the option check which ones I want to show and which ones I don't. I would like to be able to have more control over the type of marking with the selection type notes. IT would be really cool to be able to change the icon (colored box) that shows in the resource.

Precisely my preference. Nearly all of my notes are attached to a text selection. Who wants icons appearing all over the place?

That doesn't work at all for what I want. If the note file is open, the icons should show. If the note file is closed, the icons should not show. This should happen without needing to change the setting on the resource each time. I want only one note file to show at all times -- General notes. This means that there would need to be a setting for each note determining whether the icon would display without having to open the note file -- this is exactly as it was in L3.

If nesting popups is a no-go, then I'd prefer last used notes list rather than open notes list. If the notes are open anyway, why use a right-click, why not use the tab? Since the aim is to put a note into a note-file that is not visible, why only list ones that are?

Better still, why not give the user the option of how to arrange it in options/preferences?

Is the notes update something that will be incorporated in 4.0a? I haven't been able to install the beta - too busy finishing up the seminary semester.

I will not be using note files until something like one of these solutions is incorporated, because it becomes too frustrating. I only need a couple note files, so last 3-5 would work great for me. Last opened file is too limiting. I'm thinking "Notes on Reading," "Study Notes," "Bible Notes" would be adequate. I don't want to mix these basic categories though. Basically I want to be able to keep track of thoughts etc on a particular section or verse and then search them later. I don't need anything more complicated than that, but just a way to send a note to one of 3-5 files.

I agree...the more I use notes, the more I appreciate the nested menus for adding a note in L3. I agree that those were cluttered, and I like many aspects of the new one, but I really dislike needing to open a note file to cause it to appear on the menu...one extra step, a very slow step as it usually takes 5+ seconds to open a note file.

As I have thought more about this I really like the idea of a global switch to switch on the note files that I want to have active (show in the visual filters drop down) in conjunction with the visual switch in the visual filters dialog to allow them to show or not show in the resource.

Whatever is switched on from the global switch will also show in the right click menu. This can also keep the right click menu from having every note file on it. This allows the idea of archiving files that we may not want to have in active use. (but still show up in searches)

The problem with using the visual filter list only to activate or deactivate notes is that it would have to be turned off in each resource and this is a real hassle. I like having the option to show in a resource but I would like to have a global type switch to turn them off in all resources.

So, a global check list of notes (or a property of the note file) that when checked, makes it an active note file, meaning:

it shows in the visual filter list
- initially turned on to show in all appropriate resource
- allowing for toggle to show in the resource
it shows in the right click menu (with submenus as needed)

All note files, whether activated or deactivate (kinda like archiving), will show in searching. The only thing that would keep a ntoe file from showing in a search would be to delete it.

I also agree with George that if you have a note file open it should show in the resource. i would think that opening or creating a file would set the "global" switch to on/active.

I do see a little bit of a problem with having multiple places to switch on the notes, which could result in some calls to customer support, asking why does this show or not show?

But as they function now it is very cumbersome to deal with the notes and work efficiently.

If I had to pick an option to remove, it would be to remove the resource specific check boxes from the visual filter drop down in favor of a global switch which would activate the notes I want active. But selfishly, I would like to have both. (But I don't have to answer the support calls.)

[edit] In playing around, I discovered you can drag a selection into a clipping file. I have a pane with 4 clipping files as tabs. I selected the one I wanted to add text to and just dragged the selection into the clippings document. That seems a pretty straightforward work-around for me in my current projects, but it still would be good to fix the right-click menus.

I notice that the last post in this thread is over 3 months old and nothing was done about it at all.

I switched over to L4 once I could port my L3 notes over. There's little point in going back to L3 since I'd have to reconcile notes manually. So I'm doing the best I can with L4. There are features I like better in L4, however as each day goes by I get more disappointed with Logos over the poor implementation of capturing and organizing the results of my research. What has been done is just not even close to acceptable. I have a huge investment in this product that has been built over the years and in there's a little tickle in the back of my mind that wonders if I need to start preparing myself for the possibility that it will be rendered irrelevant if Logos can't get this aspect of their program working a lot better in the next few months.

This thread was pre-4.0b which did have additional capabilities in note functionality. From your response, I can't determine what features of notes you are referring to. I agree that there is still work to be done.

I was just a bit surprised to see that this issue has been discussed for quite some time, yet still remains a major weakness in the product. So this was never changed? In 4.2, we still must open a note file to make it the most recently used file or only use one note file in order to get the opportunity to right-click and create a note. Correct?

It was changed. In the early versions, only one note was listed regardless of how many note files were open. In recent versions all open notes are listed (or if no notes are listed then the mostly recently opened note is opened instead).
