I concur with the slow aspect of the note feature. There has been numerous threads on this issue for a long time and while there has been some progress I don't think there has been enough. I do not mean this in a mean way, and I know there is work going on in many different areas, but notes seems to be a rather basic area that really needs to be addressed. Only my opinion obviously!

Option: could have replied to your previous => Notes thread. On 12 Jan 2012, Logos 4.3 SR-8 was the current stable release. On 15 Mar 2012, Logos 4.5a SR-1 was released to stable channel. Noted older => Notes thread includes replies about Logos 4.5b Beta 5 improving Notes performance; current beta release is Logos 4.5b Beta 7; wiki has => Logos 4 Beta Program with information and risks. As a Logos user, currently have no estimate when Logos 4.5b will be ready for stable use.

For lots of notes, wonder if Personal Books would be faster overall ? (knowing Personal Books are edited in a docx file, which has to be saved and built for Logos 4 use).

At this point, screen shots are a waste of time. The delay while typing has been reported numerous times already for over two years now. The persistent line when moving notes has been reported and acknowledged by Logos.

That defeats the whole purpose of having a notes feature in L4. I know that Bob P previously made this suggestion, but I see as a means to avoid fixing a feature that was poorly designed in the first place.

Amen brother! I don't make large notes but I make many small notes at various points during my Bible study so the Personal Books feature has little value to me! I hope that this is viewed by the "powers to be" and they will respond in some way to let us "users" know where the note feature stands and "throw us a bone" so we can hope for something in the NEAR future! This one issue all by itself has inhibited my desire to purchase more resources in L4. Notes is a BIG feature for some of us!

I agree 110%. Having personal books are great, but it is not notes. They perform two different functions.

According to Bob P., users have been complaining about the limited note function in their software for 20 years now. Because of this, I do not think anything is coming in the NEAR future. Still, I do expect to see some improvments to the note function.

Personally wish for visual filter highlighting of chapter and verse numbers, especially if could be combined with a passage list so could highlight numbers that have a Personal Book expansion; really awesome would be ability to click note indicator to open Personal Book to verse location (using an appropriate milestone). Another use for highlighting chapter and verse number is setting the foreground text color to match resource background so effectively numbers disappear from view while studying.

Another thought is Note indicator integration with Cited By so indicators could be added by searching a collection for verse reference, possibly different indicators for different collections (e.g. different types of commentaries) so could click an indicator to open Cited By collection list.

Looking at # 1 Logos User Voice suggestion (now has 1,005 votes) => Rework notes function - in one or multiple phases noted inclusion of:

• improve the performance: keyboard entry, long notes and note files

Also noted 64 comments about Logos User Voice suggestion, often with passion for quick effective Note integration in Logos for Bible Study. With Logos wanting to increase academic appeal, anticipate many note improvements would be greatly appreciated.

Now we have "Community Notes"...sorry, I don't need to share nor place anything some where else.

I need features (Notes,Clipping, Sermon file) that I can work with myself.

Personal Books is great...but my Notes & sermons are works I refer again & again.

My study, work, accumulation of material...I want to be able to refer to over and over.

Very true. What I was trying to say (and did a poor job at it), Logos has never done a good job at providing a note subsystem. Even with the many, and there have been many improvements to L4 notes, it is by far the worst subsystem in L4.

And now that one of their competitors has begun work on notes synchronization when you start and shut down their app, it will not be the only company with notes sync between Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. I believe I will be moving to using that program for my notes from now on.

I just downloaded the demo of the competition. If they are syncing across devices with notes and typing will keep up and it links to Bible resources, I just may switch. Sorry, Logos. I am not asking for a word processor in Logos, I just want to be able to type faster than a snail moves and link!

Looking at their help file and forum, it appears that the mysterious "competition" is indeed a Mac product. The feature also appears to be very much a work in progress.

UPDATE: Looked at the help file and the Notes podcast. As poor as Notes are in L4 Mac, they are still superior to this competitor's version.

With the latest update notes appears to be a "little" better. There is still the problem with the default note font NOT changing even though it is changed in preferences. It doesn't do this in the windows version! I find that I must hit the space bar, then back up and then the font will change "on its own" to what I have listed in the preferences. There is still a "lag" in the Mac notes but not so noticeable in Windows. I have two other Bible study programs and I did not know if it was one of those (Accordance and Wordsearch 9).

Yes, it was the native Mac one of those [8-|]. The synch feature is rather anemic—one computer to iOS devices. Also, I saw one huge problem with their im-lementation of notes: You can only add links to Scripture references.

Other weaknesses in their notes feature are probably just a matter of being accustomed to the way things are done in L4 [H]

Unless you're a beta tester of the competition you won't have access to the feature. Read my statement. I said they are starting to or something like that.

I actually really like the Logos notes tool. It's just the right amount of usefulness and features. I love that it syncs to all your devices. I just hate typing at and having my words show up on screen sometimes a few seconds after I've typed a letter. Fix that one thing and in my book Logos will have best Notes utility of any Bible software around.

I did in fact understand that it was a "work in progress", I merely was interested to know who it was. As a user of four different Bible study tools (programs) I did not know if I was already using the program.

Also I concur with your assessment of current Logos notes. As I have already stated the problem is not nearly as severe in Windows. Thanks for the response.

It would be possible. I just don't think I'm at liberty to say. My purpose in bringing it up is to say to the Logos folks that they may wish to focus on this as there are some who see this as a priority enough to become less dependent on Logos for this purpose. I'm a Logos fan but I use notes on all my devices so much that if another company can give me a better experience I may be willing to switch to using another program for my primary Bible study and thus make future purchases for resources with that company.

Logos is very good at listening to its vocal and often critical users. On this issue they still need work. Make notes as fast as typing in the competition and I miay even be able to uninstall the competition.

I agree. Feature wise, I think the Logos note system is adequate. However, MJ has mentioned some desired feature additions which would be nice, but for me are not necessary. That said, the one feature that is missing that would seem mandatory for Bible software is auto linking to resources, particularly Bible verses. I know, supposedly it is an OS level deficiency, yet other apps seem to be able to make it work.

For me, the biggest irk, the one thing that keeps me from using the system is the typing performance. So much so, that I have severely curtailed if not stopped buying resources (i.e. investment in the system). As a preacher and academic at heart, I take a prodigious amount of notes. It would be great if I could do that in Logos, but its basic typing performance prohibits such.

EDIT: I also fear that if Bob's customers have been complaining about notes for over 20 years and he refuses to do anything about it, it seems unlikely that anything will get done.

While typing performance on the Mac is IMO a SEVERE detriment, I am using Logos 4 in the Windows environment via Parallels. I do however understand that negates the value of Logos in the Mac environment and perhaps since it DOES work decently in Windows the Mac side of things may not get the treatment it needs to fix the problem. Not sure, only speculating.

In the long run, sharing notes has a value if you are a teacher or pastor or Bible study leader and want to share notes with a group of people, BUT I also agree that adding NEW features is a waste of time when the ones we have don't work right. Logos tends to get excited about adding new stuff because that gets more first time sales. But it would be nice if they could get excited about making stuff work for existing users. After 2 years, I just don't think it is a real priority for them to make it work right.

Add to that list scrolling problems. For long notes, I still tend to type them externally and then paste into Logos for the search function, but this is still the user creating a workaround for poor programming.

You are right. There are two other Mac Bible software programs I have installed right now that do notes linking automatically. One runs in a virtual environment so it isn't fair to compare since its just a Windows program running in a virutal environment included in the software. The other is a native mac app and it automatilly changes bible references to a hyperlink. So its not just a OS problem. It is a Logos problem whether Logos wants to admit it.

That said, it is pretty easy to add a note Bible reference link in Logos so I don't complain to much. You highlight the reference and hit cmd+c and then cmd+k and cmd+v and you're done. Pretty fast if you get used to the keyboard shortcuts.

If they can add auto linking and speed up typing performance then I'd be really happy. If they just speed up typing then I'm fine.
