Bible Word Study Shows Books in Addition to Defined Collection

Greetings. I have made my own collection of Bible Word Study books because - in the Bible Word Study guide - it displays all my word study resources, and there is often much overlap and repetition due to having similar resources. Thus, I made my own Bible Word Study Collection including only the word study books I want appearing in my own Word Study Template. However, when I do a word study, the resources I specifically indicated that were not to appear in my collection (and, thus my Word Study Report) continue to appear. Is there any way to ensure that the resources I do not want to appear in this guide actually do not appear?
Thanks.

Jonathan - First, welcome to the forums!

I think the issue is one of prioritization. Resources (books) that you prioritize will show up first, while other resources will show up further down the list (or concealed under "more"). Have you prioritized the resources that you do want?

Yes, I have prioritized the resources I would like to use. However, there are some resources in the report that I just do not want to appear. That was the reason for making a collection which only included certain resources.
As I understand collections, the purpose for making them is so that our searches can be confined to specific resources. This is what I would like to appear in the report. However, this does not only go for Word Study Reports, but even Passage Guide Reports. I do not want every single commentary that I own to appear on the report, only the ones I specify in that collection.

So, does the collection contain only the commentary resources you require?

Please show how you apply the commentary collection to a Guide. This is My Passage Guide customised as per http://wiki.logos.com/Customizing_the_Passage_and_Exegetical_Guides
My main commentary collection is Commentaries and there is another one from commentaries tagged as Notes (mytag:Notes).

My appologies! I did some further working and the passage guide report is working correctly. (The commentaries in my collection are the only ones appearing in the Passage Guide Report.) However, I am stil having the same problem with the Word Study Guide. In the same way that I have only the commentaries appear in my Passage Guide Report which are part of my commentary collection, I would like only the books in my word study collection to appear in the report generated by my Word Study Guide.

Jonathan,
My apology for coming to the party a little late. But I believe that I know exactly what you are attempting to do. Before I esplain it, I would like to ask a couple of questions that may help, if you do not mind answering:
I believe that you want to create a type of guide that when you open the guide(Word Study) all you see listed is your Word study resources [lexicons, dictionary(s), etc] such as Vines, BDAG, BDB, Louw-Nida, NASB Diction., Ehnanced Strongs, etc., etc., depending on your resources. That you have in your priority list[collection].
Is this correct?
You would like to see this new ‘guide’ that you created in the list provided on the right in the 'pop-up window'when you ‘right-click’ on a word from your chosen Bible?
Is this correct?

Hi. The first part of your respose is correct. I do want my Word Study Guide to list my resources, but only those resources I specify.
I will attach some pictures to illustrate my problem:
As you can see here, my personal collection - and I specify in my collection that I do not want the Lexham Analytical Lexicon of the Greek NT to not be in my collection, and thus, not appearing in my personal Word Study guide.
Next picture is my actual generated guide report:
As you can see, in this word study report - even though I do not want the Lexham book to appear in the report, it appears nonetheless. This is my problem. The resources I specify to not appear, do appear. This is where I need help.
The second part of your reply - I am find with that. I know how to get my own personal guide to be availbe upon right click of the mouse.
Thanks.

Hi Jonathan
The collection in your BWS is associated with the "Description" section but the Lexham book is appearing in the "Lemma" section so isn't affected by this collection (I'm not sure of the relevance of it in the Description section but that's another issue!)
So the Lemma section is returning all lexica etc which match the word you are studying in prioritised order.
I'm not aware of any mechanism to limit the lexica which are used in this section.

Room4more, please report the crashing bug. Save the log file (Logos4.log) from when it crashed (as it will be overwritten the next time you start Logos) and post it along with Logos4Crash.txt. If you don't have a log file, enable diagnostic logging, try the guide again, and see if it crashes again.

Looking at Word Study Books collection, may want to consider adding a tag (e.g. WordStudyBooks) to your desired resources. Since the collection has no rule, actually has no need for resources to be listed in "Minus these resources"
Wiki has => http://wiki.logos.com/Tagging
Adding a tag to resources creates a collection: e.g. mytag:WordStudyBooks

The Lemma section in Bible Word Study (BWS) does not have a setting to specify a collection filter, which is different than BWS Definition section. The order of lexicons in the BWS Lemma section match Library prioritization. My lexicon priorities do not fit in one screenshot
Apologies: personally have prioritized "The Lexham Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament" as my # 1 Greek lexicon because entries include cognate words. For example, ἀγαπάω is the verbal form related to the noun ἀγάπη while ἀγαπητός is an adjective. For word study, would suggest looking at context of all three forms, perhaps using a Morph Search:
lemma:ἀγαπάω OR lemma:ἀγάπη OR lemma:ἀγαπητός
that could be copied and changed to a Bible Search (using a mytag collection of Bibles in my library):
Grid results allow easy switch from one Bible to another by clicking Bible (e.g. LDGNT).
Option: if do not want to see a resource in Logos 4, then suggest hiding resource: wiki has => Hiding Books
Keep Smiling [:)]

Hhhmmmppphhh!!! Ok back. I know why it crashed.
Everything is kewl…I’ve never had it crash before and this was the first….but I got it together… I got some pics from this winxp I’m on w/no internet and w/no autoupdate.
So I am good. Jonathan you can’t do it as a ‘word study’ I esplain to you in a sec….
that was so frustrating...I got an appointment here in a few, but I will add the pics and show you where to put it....

I am not so sure it is a bug as it is just L4 acting to protect itself. Here are the most current logs done with the crash and online. The crash occurs when attempting to change the template from a ‘bible reference’ to a ‘bible word’ designation. Meaning, that you will probably be changing the attributes of the guide. It, L4, recognizes the error and shuts down – hahaha won’t do that again.
Jonathan, here’s the reason it won’t work[as you did it]:
Refer pic #1: Word study’s can/are generated by definitions, that’s why the heading ‘Definitions’ then sub-titled ‘collections’ àchoose resources. You will notice in the pic - “r4m”- that I have it “”lemma, ‘Definition’, etc., etc..”” – but in the bottm pic it did not generate it. Per why you probably do not see it.
{[this is where I think that there is possibly a bug#1] that the BWS already does a definition and it is always at the top –always….The ‘Bible word’ for the ‘create your own’ is based on the BWS, at least that’s what I have always understood from years back. But if you add your own it should generate it, at least I think it should….but it does not…}
To test this theory, make a guide as WS and choose ‘Bible word’ then close it---add nothing---right-click a word from an interlin’r and choose your new guide from the list – you see – it generated a ‘definition’[first tab] but remember it is an empty new guide……now with it open, click its tab-icon[upper right of the tab] and “edit xxxx” add the definition->choose your word study collection. Then close that tab and click again the icon and “refresh” you will note that nothing changed…..you can even close that tab choose a new word – rightclick – choose the new guide and still nothing changed…even a restart does not matter…..it stays the same.
--Now here’s how you can get it to work—
Delete/remove the guide you created, because if you try to change it by an “edit xxx” you WILL crash….everytime…..
-Start with a new guideàName itàand choose ‘Bible Reference’ -à leave it as is;
-look down the list and choose ‘Collections’àchoose your collection;
-close all and restart;
-Open just the new guide[note that it asks for a ‘reference’ in the comment box] type in a text, oh say Jn 1.1 hit enter.
-notice that only those ‘word study resources are listed and it really looks terrible…..even to the point that its hard to decipher if you have never done this….[left side]
Here’s how you fix it -right side above:
-make a new WrdStdy collection[keep your old one DO NOT DELLETE it!!] with a new name and add only ONE resource – say your #1 priority;
-click the tab-icon as before and change the collection to that new one with just ONE resource;
-close;
-click again and refresh.
It will just use that one resource and looks much better.
********************
Here’s what’s going on: It basically just sorts the words. In the pic you see that I have one resource and in the other more than one resource.
Pros: its fast loading, it works the same as the “lemma” from the BWS
Cons: you don’t have to mess with the BWS and get all the other stuff – but then you can’t add the other stuff to it.

Sorry for this post. but I think that theres is a BUG#2 as well.
he stated that even tho he had some in the "minus these resources" box that they still showed in the lemma section.
I can verify that because I put a bunch in there and it still had them listed in the 'lemma' section.....shouldn't it have not shown those resources if they were designated "MINUS"?
This I believe is the second Bug...
again sorry for this post..

Observation: Bible Word Study (BWS) does not have an optional setting like Dictionary to specify a collection (subset of lexicons) for original language lemma headwords.
My Bible Word Study has English sections (Dictionary, Greek words, and Hebrew words) followed by Original Language sections (Lemma, Translations, Septuagint Translation, Preposition Use, Grammatical Relationships, and Example Uses) followed by one section (Textual Searches) that appears regardless of language. For Dictionary, my preferred collection is Encyclopedia (type:Encyclopedia) to look up English headwords.
If BWS has a Greek lemma (e.g. ἀγάπη), then Septuagint Translation section appears, which can show Greek word usage in the Septuagint. If BWS has a Hebrew or Aramaic lemma, a Translation section can use Logos LXX to show corresponding Greek translation. If BWS has an English word, the Definition section appears. By the way, BWS for love shows several Greek lemma's (including cognates: ἀγαπάω , ἀγάπη & ἀγαπητός ) that have been translated as "love". Likewise, the Hebrew ring for Logos LXX translation shows couple sets of Greek cognate lemma's (smaller segments have φιλει and φιλω ) along with noun, verb, and adjective translations. Noticed Textual Searches has different kinds of results, which reflect language of word being studied.
Personally wish Lemma section had an option for collection setting (like Definition Section) so could choose a subset of lexicons for BWS use.
Keep Smiling [:)]

Yeah that’s what I am thinking, since the lemma is derived from your lexicons and the like...but I didn't think of it way back when, i made it so that I could just pull up a text and boom it was there then if needed i would load the BWS/Exeg.
Yet somehow I do not think that there will be any amendments/adjustments for something that already exist, we can manipulate it some but thats about it. I played with it a little more and you cannot put the Pass/exeg into the Bible area when creating a new guide - well ya can but it's futile....they won't show...

With regard to specifying collections for the lemma section in the BWS guide, I have passed this suggestion along to development.
Room4More, with regard to this issue:
[quote]To test this theory, make a guide as WS and choose ‘Bible word’ then close it---add nothing---right-click a word from an interlin’r and choose your new guide from the list – you see – it generated a ‘definition’[first tab] but remember it is an empty new guide……now with it open, click its tab-icon[upper right of the tab] and “edit xxxx” add the definition->choose your word study collection. I was unable to reproduce that issue on 4.5c Beta 1. I did observe that any changes made to a BWS guide template while a BWS was open would not reflect until the BWS was closed and reopened, and I have passed that along to development.
Finally, thank you for your reporting your crash and providing the corresponding log files. However, in future, please post bugs and crashes in their own threads rather than appending them to other threads. This makes them easier to track and respond to. I was unable to reproduce this in 4.5c Beta 1.
