Float Window problem

Hello,

I have a problem very similar to this one - http://community.logos.com/forums/p/12308/96020.aspx

Except...

If I float the tab via the right-click pop-up menu, all is well.

If I float the tab via the top left drop-down menu, I then cannot access the main Logos window. I need to dock the tab, or minimise it before I can access the main windows

All was fine until a couple of days ago.

I am running Win7 64bit, 4GB ram.

I tried a reinstall  last night. It had no affect, other than depriving me of sleep.

Any ideas?

That's interesting, but you're right. I don't use the upper-left dropdown so I don't know how long it's done this. I guess you use it, so it's recent.

I haven't had any W7 updates for a while. But I did update L4 a couple of times.

I notice also the Cntrl-F11 works fine if the dropdown isn't open. However if the dropdown is open, sometimes the new floating window refuses to give up to the main window, and sometimes it's ok.  I haven't seen what the 'clue' is. I thought it might have to do with whether it's the last tab in the panel.

I notice in all cases clicking on the drop down causes the problem.

    I also have W7-64.

I'm not sure I understand your problem or, if I do understand, I can't reproduce it.

Are you sure, George? It's kind of an interesting problem. I wonder (assuming Logos didn't fix it) if it could be a useful feature for Bible study.

If you use the right-click menu over a tab and select 'float window', the new window operates normally; you can click on the original window and the original comes to the top.

But if you use the top-left menu (the book cover) and select float window, the new floated window won't give up focus initially. It will if you then click in the text area. I think the issue has to do with the top-left menu not giving up focus.

Probably it was that new 3D menu that caused the problem!

I'm good here, I can maximize it and atl-tab back and forth between three: two floaters and the main....sorry I can not reproduce what you say.........Also, if I open a fresh resource from the library as a floater I now have four and can still alt-tab - or - taskbar between them...

Yes, it is reluctant to give up focus until you click in the floating window or minimise it. The behaviour should be the same as floating via a right click on the tab (using 4.5c beta).

    Hi Jason,

I'm sorry but I'm unable to reproduce the behavior your describe. When I open a book, then float it from the panel menu, alt tab works fine switching between windows. Is it safe to assume you've restarted Logos 4, and the computer in your attempts to troubleshoot the problem? If you have not tried either, please try both.

    Thank you.

Tommy ... yes, you can alt-tab your way out of it. Similarly you can click on the text area and that also releases the window's focus lock.

    And yes, I've re-started.

Just follow the sequence ... open the top-left resource menu ... select float panel ... wait for it to create a window ... then with your mouse, click on the earlier window. It won't release the focus (again unless you click in the text area, or use alt-tab).

Maybe for Jason it's worse; for me it's an interesting feature to hold the window on top until I want to release it.

It's just annoying having floated windows one way for so long to all of a sudden stop working.

It would seem the only thing consistent about Windows is it's inconsistent. It appears to be a problem that is only affecting some machines. I hooked up my old  desktop, did an update, and the problem did not occur, although I did need to click on the floating window before I could click on the main menu. The problem is only on my laptop.

So why don't I just use my desktop? Because it needs a reinstall, and I have no interest in doing that.

    Hi Jason,

I followed yours and DMB's repro instructions but did not experience the same behavior. If this issue is serious enough for either of you, can you call us at 800-875-6467. Thank you.

Tommy ... appreciate you following up. I also notice your name popping up here and there on the forum helping people. You're very kind.

I'm sure Jason will input later; for me, it's just interesting.

Thank you DMB for the kind words. Hunter (one of the other guys over here in tech) was actually able to reproduce the bug, and now so can I. I was floating directly from the Library panel, not opening the book, and then using the panel menu to float the panel. I'll create logs and then send them off to dev with a link to this thread.

  • Bug: Some floating windows do not want to give up focus back to the main window

    Description

I have the exact same problem: Floating window doesn't want to give up focus back to the main window, so then clicks on the main window does not register - started happening for me recently.

    Steps to reproduce

    1. Loaded Logos
    2. Opened one of my layouts

    3. Opened one of my saved notes

    4. Right Clicked the note's header and selected "Open in a floating window"

    5. Note opened up in floating window.  (position 4 attachment)

    6. Tried unsuccessfully to click on buttons in red highlighted area, it seems the floating window retained focus no matter what.

    Actual Result
Floating window retained focus and background main window interaction was ignored.
    Expected Result
Main window should have focused and functioned based on what I clicked on.

It is very erratic, if you click double click and right click like mad on the main window sometimes it will take. I believe this started being a problem for me after the look of logos 4 was changed to the logos 5 windows 8 look, but I'm not certain. I have attached Screenshots to accompany the steps and my logos logs for when it occurred.

Here I have attached my Logos 4 log for when the problem occurred:3005.Logos Log Files.zip

  • I forgot to add, I have this same problem on my work machine - similar specs same OS.

Kenneth ... while you're waiting for 'real' expertise, you might try to do again but without the internet on (no sync'ing).

Looking at your error files (which are not necessarily related), the issue might not be focus, but rather the software in a semi-wait state in the sync process?  Anyway, you might try a little diagnosis while you're waiting.

  • Hi DMB,

Just ran it again in offline mode same symptom, here's the offline mode log: 2235.Logos Log Files.zip

I am busy downloading some big files which probably explains the "sync issues".

    Kind Regards,

The logs are not helpful and this remains a bug in Logos4, but it has been fixed in Logos 5.

    Hello Kenneth,

Regarding step three, can you tell me exactly the manner in which you opened the note file? Did you navigate to Documents and opened it from there?

    Thanks

It was via a File->Note click from the main menu on the top.

Bug: Some floating windows do not want to give up focus back to the main window

This is a bug in Logos 4 that we believe (but haven't been able to definitively prove) is caused by WPF.

It's fixed in Logos 5, which uses a different version of WPF: http://www.logos.com/installation

I've been thinking about updating to the new engine, but I haven't been able to find a guide on how to do it without (seeming) needing to download everything again - does anyone have a link to such a guide?

    Thanks

You shouldn't need to download everything again, since Logos 5 uses the same directory structure as Logos 4 if Logos 4 is installed on the machine already. To update to just the new (free) engine, go to this link and click on the appropriate Logos 5 installer for your OS (Windows or Mac).
