Basic Search funtionality

Have we any word about whether the Search function in the iOS apps will be enhanced beyond what we now have? If so, how and when? It seems that right now all that can be done is to find all occurrences of a word in a Bible or resource/collection/entire library. That is rarely what I'd want to do on the iPad and probably less so in the iPhone if I owned one.

Nothing has been said publicly that I am aware of. I am not sure how much more helpful the search feature will become in the immediate future while the search is performed on the Logos servers.

I doubt it would take all that much to at least implement the ability to limit Bible searches to search ranges and I'm sure the servers could do those. That would be a good first step. I'd also like to see simple Boolean search capability.

The iPad is not going to replace a laptop or desktop for serious Bible study, but the search function right now is pretty useless because it generates too many results and the iPad won't display very many at a time. There is also no quick way to skip to results I might be interested in. Finding results in Hebrews when one has to scroll through results starting in Genesis is too much.

In general, for iOS, it would be nice to see a future feature list like what has been provided for Faithlife.

I unfortunately agree, although I don't really use my iPad for "study." I use it daily and it is my preferred device to read and take brief notes.

In general, for iOS, it would be nice to see a future feature list like what has been provided for Faithlife.

The only thing else I can add is that Logos has said elsewhere that the current Faithlife app will push development of the other apps (Logos, Vyrso) into the future.

Which raises the question, is Search in the iOS apps just window-dressing? It really isn't useful. Logos long ago abandoned simple searches like we now have in iOS. I hope Logos does have plans to enhance it.

As for serious study we agree. Yet I just got back from a week away and it was very nice not to lug the laptop around. Having a bit more in the iOS app would have been quite sweet.

I think that as the technology continues to improve, the app will mature nicely. I don't see it ever truly replacing the desktop version (if for no other reason than lack of screen space), but it could be much more useful. I'm convinced it will get there, but it may take a couple of years.

I'd like at least to be able to quickly look something while I'm reading. For example, if I come across a place name or personal name that I don't recognize, I want to quickly find it in my preferred dictionary(ies) without having to wade through every usage of the word in the Bible. That means being able to restrict the search to my chosen collection of books.

That should be coming sooner, rather than later. The sync function for collections hasn't fully migrated to sync v.2, but the app is supposed to have that ability.

Jonathan, while we can't set a default collection to search we can search collections at least on the iPad. Open Search and hold down the button just left of the search dialog box and you should see a list of your collections open up. At the end of the list you should see the individual titles you have open listed. Select the collection or resource you want and rerun the search.

I'd love to have control over the default search choice so one could build a custom collection of top priority resources for simple searches and assign that for the default.

Both. Try creating a new collection. It likely will not sync. I have collections on my mobile devices that I deleted LONG ago.

HMM. Interesting. So where is the app getting the collections it synched to my iPad a couple of weeks ago when I first installed? (I did try creating a new collection and it didn't sync.)

I am not a programmer, nor do I play one on TV. [:)] Perhaps like Rod Sterling used to say,

In all seriousness, I don't really know, but the Logos servers apparently do keep some user data for collections that is just "stuck." You can delete the app and reinstall and the same collections will appear. (I delete the app regularly to trouble shoot, etc. and can testify to this).

So it can 'sync' if we can call it that on installation from some sort of collection db on the servers, but not after that. Time to get that working properly.

I have no inside info on this, but it seems to me that syncing of collections is a part of 4.5c. If that is true, it will just take an update to the mobile app. (It's important to remember that these things always take 2 fixes - one for L4 & another for mobile). I think it will be soon(ish).
