Rooted Nook Touch works well

Fellow Logos users,

Just a testimony of my experience...I recently bought a Nook Touch knowing I would "root" it to make an Android device. I used the instructions here:http://www.the-ebook-reader.com/nook-touch-root.html The instructions were generally straightforward. I also bought a 16GB SD Card as recommended.

I immediately loaded the Logos Android Beta and I must say that I am generally please with how well it works! I think others should at least consider this option for the price savings and the pearl screen. The screen helps for load periods of reading. The browser and other android apps work well.

As everyone else consistently requests, I really would appreciate highlighting and notes in the app. If you want a more IPAD-ish experience, you should pick up the Nook Color.

I am also running logos on the nook touch. It works great for reading
through books, but is a little slow for using things like the passage
guide or word studies. But if you want to read through all those books

Hi Mark,

Highlighting/Notes are not yet supported on Android devices - rooted or otherwise. However, this feature is in the pipeline.

That may be true, but just because the Android operating system supports highlighting doesn't mean that every application written for Android supports highlighting. Further, highlighting in Logos isn't as simple as with other applications because Logos highlights and notes have to sync back to the Desktop and other mobile devices running Logos. In any case the feature is in the works.

I followed the instructions above and was able to root the Nook Touch. After I rooted the Nook Touch it took over 24 hours for the rooted Nook to reopen. I was thinking that I had a brick on my hand. I gather from reading that has happened to others as well. Logos does work and I am able to read books. However when turning pages it take an extra second for the page to become sharp. This does not happen when reading via the Kindle app on the Touch. In some of the other apps the keyboard is cut off. I still am not sure how to delete an app. I would recommend this only for those who don't want to spend extra money to get a regular Android reader. I wanted a reader that I could take into situations overseas where a tablet would attract undue attention.

I did this with equal success and was wondering if anyone has been able to get the page change buttons to work. Does the Android app accept keys input to change pages?

I also followed the
linked walk-through (at the.ebook.reader.com), with some problems, but without
the large ones you've encountered. As for the problems within Logos I've
encountered none of the kind. The app works very well. (I suppose you don't
mean the white/black flashing, which is almost unavoidable in non-stock apps.) I've
found that the loading time when switching pages is significantly better after
downloading books, but you're probably aware of this already.
I still am not sure how to delete an app. You can uninstall
apps from the Super Manager App. The app came bundled with the rest of the root
package. The app probably needs Superuser rights which you have to accept
giving it (you should be asked automatically when opening the app or at a later
point). When opening the app the first screen is called Task Manager. Swipe
your finger from right to left. The second screen is called APK Manager. The
first item on the menu is also called APK Manager, open this. This brings you
to a list of your applications. If you press an app you get a number of
options, among them uninstall. Be VERY careful of what you uninstall, it’s
possible to uninstall vital processes through this app. Opera/Amazon and apps
you've installed yourself should be fine. If there is an app you don't know the
function of you better leave it.

Not to hijack this thread too much, but if you're running Logos on a rooted nook, be sure to install the tools that let you use the side buttons for back/menu purposes. This makes it very nice to jump 'back' when you've jumped forward to a cross reference. The screen flashing is unavoidable unless Logos programs specifically around it (which I doubt they'd have reason to). The only thing I think that would be better regarding the page turns is to have an option to remove the sliding animation.

Disclaimer: I've not read Greek or Hebrew extensively, I checked it up to be able to answer your question.

The Greek text is rendered fine in the resources. NA27 with textual criticism does not get the critical symbols right, SBLGNT does. The greek letters are not rendered correctly in the menus (e.g. when you want to do a word study) where some characters are exchanged with question marks etc. This is similar to how the app behaves on another device of mine. Reading greek and using the greek tools should not be a problem.

The Hebrew tends to misplace the vowels slightly to the left of where they should be. It's readable, but I guess it's annoying, at least in the beginning. (This is still a lot better than on my other device where the letters in a word reads left to right while the word order is correct, right to left.) The text criticism works just fine (SESB ed. of BHS)

With the latest update to the app, i am getting a better experience
with page turning. It is much closer to what you get when you are
reading a Nook book. I would now rate it as a satisfactory.
