Why is Logos 4 so slow?Everytime I open it up, it takes forever to login & sync.Is this going to ever be fixed?There are many others who have experienced the same problem,but still no resolution.
Bob, welcome to the forums. You are right that start-up can be slower than, say, MS Word, but Logos is syncing and downloading info, which many programs don't do. For that reason I try to leave Logos open and my computer on.
Computer speed and memory as well as Internet speed make a difference. Can you tell us more about the specs of he computer you are running Logos on.

So how long is 'forever' on your computer? On my desktop it takes about 50 seconds (it used to take 90 - so it's much, much better). It will take slightly longer if I have a large number of resources open at the same time.
Unlike Mark, I restart my (desktop) computer daily, because I like to start each day with a fresh start up. So, my typical habit is to go to my study 1st thing, start up Logos, and go get a cup of coffee. By the time I'm back at the desk, Logos is finished loading. Just now, I started Logos and timed it, as I was doing other stuff (like responding to a forum post and checking my email). So, there's more than one way to wait productively.
I love many things about Logos and overall, I do think that it is great software. But I have never been satisfied with the kind of answers usually provided to explain away why it is so slow indeed. It is just not as responsive a program as others. As I said, it is still my program of choice but I wish there were a stop to defending that aspect of its performance and that it would be seen for what it is: one of the most obvious not-so-positive aspect of the present installment.
A case in point is all the blab about why indexing is so important and that supposedly it will speed up subsequent searches. Indexing takes a very long time and searches are still somewhat slow. Though there are functionalities that are more powerful than what there was in Libronix 3, for similar searches, the former was faster.

That is curious. I would say precisely the opposite. Searches across my library in L4 for me are literally seconds, searches across my library in L3 took up to 10 minutes or more.
Obviously your mileage is way different which makes this just plain curious to me.

Without a doubt, as high a quality and speed of hardware as possible is paramount for a satisfactory L4 experience. If you are limping along with legacy hardware, your Logos use will continue to be frustrating. But L4 does not necessarily need to be such an exasperating experience. It is a great program but it requires as much horsepower as you can afford. For example, a desktop PC with a Core i7 3770k (oc'd to 4.2 GHz), Intel 4000 gpu, 32 GB ram, and an Intel 520 Series ssd will result in an L4 startup time = 7 sec. If I might suggest it, perhaps a computer upgrade should be the next investment (before more L4 books)?
I totally agree. When L4 first came out, we were told that L4 was built for the future. Well, almost three years later, people are still complaining about the speed of L4. Come people have stated that L4 runs better on a their computer with an upgrade this or that. Others have purchased a 'super mega machine,' and they still say L4 is very slow on their computer.
Because the way it was designed and the platform that it uses, not only has L4 always been slow; I believe that L4 will always be slow.
This being said, L4 is a lot faster now than it was when it first came out. I will say between two to three times faster.
I find it slow to load too, but is amazingly fast when one considers the search capabilities. In March, my Logos 4 started loading so slowly that it was taking 15-20 minutes to load, so I knew something was up. It turned out to be another software program that I wasn't using, hadn't used for awhile, and I only found out by accident. I tried to use my Roxio program, and it told me that it was corrupt and had to be re-installed. After doing that, Logos4 loaded fine.
I hate to say this, but finding out if there is a program conflict might mean disabling all services in the config file, then try loading Logos. Then through process of elimination, allow each service to load until Logos fails again. If that doesn't work, do a clean boot, then run every program you have, one at a time, and see if any are failing. There might be something in the background that isn't working.
It helps to have extra memory. I have 8G on my laptop, and it's over 2 years old, and can be sluggish. Still, once Logos is loaded, it runs ok.
Two more hints: 1) make certain that your CD or DVD drive is empty unless you're using it; 2) make certain that your default printer is one actually attached to your computer. I use Onenote as a printer, so the program always sees it, and so functions well.
L4 was slow for me so I reviewed the performance notes. I am running a Dell Inspiron 5300 (yes, probably 6 or more years old. Logos loaded today in 50 seconds, and that it was syncing for 2 new Vyros books . I am using the Bible Study package and now have 371 books. Computers need constant vigilance to maintain the best possible performance. Even with this old of a machine, this is what I did to obtain my present performance level. Here is what I did so hope this may help.
Hmmm .... this thread is definitely a keeper. Libronix searches being faster than Logos4.
Actually that HAS been my experience as well. We're not just talking about typing in a search string, hitting the Enter, and then reviewing the microseconds of retrieval time for thousands of results I'll never look at.
No ... we're talking how long it takes the results to be actually put on display ... then how long to actually GET to those results (the reason for the search by the way). The search results panel has to be one of the poorest programmed ... no copying, difficult to page down, etc.
I do use Logos4 searching but then Alt-Tab back to Libronix to get the REAL work done.
This brings up the point and I'm really surprised the computer people on the forum rarely mention it. And that is the Libronix searches and Logos4 searches are technically naive relative to Google technology (as an example). Too bad Logos doesn't let Google do the searches.
I tried to read through everything to make sure I'm not repeating anything new, so apologies if it's been said already, but in terms of start-up speed, You will notice a significant speed increase if you do a couple of housekeeping things.
1) Turn off the home page in Logos (tell it to open to what you had open last). One major slowdown is that Logos has to download all of the information from the blog, etc to generate that page. This way, you only visit it when you want to knowing it's going to take some time. On the home page, down in the bottom left is a customize button, uncheck start home page at startup.
2) Also, on all of your exegetical, passage, bible word study, and custom guides, make sure that you have all of the headings (Commentaries, My Content, Cross References, etc) collapsed. Open each heading as you need it and then collapse it before you close the tab. You'll notice the program snaps right along and the guide results will come quicker if you open individually like that.

I would recommend a program such as Advanced System Care. I cleans registry, removes broken short cuts, etc.
The amount of books that you have, how many programs are running at startup, the amount of memory, graphics card, etc., all make a difference.
Lets try an experiment:
1. Turn off the computer and restart it. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, just to make sure that all start up programs have finished their background work.
2. Open Logos and close all windows (just blank screen).
3. Run a Bible search on the word love (entire Bible) one English version, state which one and note your time.
4. Run a search on the word "God" on the entire library, note your time.
5. How many books did the software have to search, what are the specs of your computer.
6. Try the same search offline and report your results.
I don't know but my 5 year old Dell notebook opens Logos 4 in 30 sec. when it refreshes the Home Page. Second start during the same day is 15 seconds. Doesn't sounds like slow to me. When I open my main layout with 25 resources loaded, it opens in 35 seconds.
When opening large layouts with 35 resources etc, it will take some time, but slow is relative.
I had L4 on a old P4 running XP and never had any issues with slowness or indexing. I now have it on a i7 with win 7 and a SSD and it's still very quick.
I wonder if your internet service provider or virus scanning is slowing down the syncing process

For quite some time now I've been using CCleaner (free download). About once a week or so. I remember Dave Hooten has often recommended it. *smile*
Lynden, (or someone else!?) do you think Advanced Systen Care is a great improvement over against CCleaner? Is the paid version worthy of having?
I think my computer is running far more slowly than it should be with Logos4. I usually have about 30 resources open and often a dozen websites. BTW, do the open websites (mostly Logos related) drain the capabilities of my computer?
Don't do too badly for an old guy, methinks; however, technology is becoming more and more complicated and I have to work much more strenously to keep up! *smile* Thanks in advance for any boost you can give me!

I was using MacAffee (as provided by my ATT u-verse account). I deinstalled it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Then specified in MSE options not to scan any files being opened in the Logos storage folders. This action really sped performance up for me.
I have never used CCleaner so I cannot speak to that program. I have used Advanced System Care both paid and free, and the free one does a good job, but he paid one a much better one.
The specs of your system are pretty good. Like I say, slow is relative.
Those specs are suitable for Logos. A faster computer might not be worth the money. However, how fast is Your HDD? Is it a 5,400 rpm, 7,200 rpm or 10,000 rpm?
A dozen open webpages shouldn't slow down the computer at all since You have enough RAM. However, if there's animated ads in any of the pages, that slows down a bit. It try to keep pages with animated ads open for an as short time period as possible. For one site I participate in, (a Christian discussion forum), I've paid a 1-year fee to get rid of ads, thank's to that I get rid of tracking cookies as it's the only site I have open all the time.
If You are running Windows 7, if You use InternetExplorer, Trend Micro Internet Security can quickly scan the HDD for tracking cookies and remove them. If You use Firefox, Trend Micro Internet Security doesn't find the tracking cookies. I don't know how it works with other web-browsers.
If You have a lot of tracking cookies on Your computer for a long time, viruses come, the internet slows down and the internet can even start to malfunction until reboot.
Most sites that have ads, cause tracking cookies.
