Updates Need Elevated Permission in Windows 7

I am running on Windows 7 and this morning I fired it up at church. It opened and the icon appeared signaling an update. Fine. I waited and it said it was ready to install so I allowed it to do so and began. But then it gave me the error saying "Error writing to file: C:\yada yada\Logos4.resources.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory." Of course hitting retry does nothing. I cancel and then start Logos 4 using Admin mode and it works fine. But I thought that putting it in the User folder kept this from being necessary.

Any thoughts?

If I understand correctly that you did install it in the default location - than I don't have an explanation.

I'm running Win7 and did the update this morning without so much as a hint of a problem.

Of course, I'm running as an administrator user.

The workaround is to just close down and re-open using Run as administrator. Works fine. But still a problem.

This sounds like you might have run the initial Logos 4 install as an elevated administrator (not with standard privileges), and it then created the install folder in such a way that it can now only be written to when running as admin. Did you, by any change, force the first run of Logos4Setup.exe to Run as Administrator?

The fix is probably to reset the file permissions on your install folder (and all files & subfolders) so that they're writable by your non-elevated user account; once you do this, non-elevated updates should succeed.

That's possible. Being a beta tester it might has well have been 1990 when I did it with my memory.

OK I just downloaded and attempted to install the latest update on my laptop which I KNOW I did not run setup in Admin mode. It still asks to have elevated permissions. So that cannot be the cause.

I have the same problem, I always run as administrator in vista business 64, but got the error after I re-load the program to put everything on the M:\ drive...so far, no daily updates and looking for a work-around. Brian

Here is what worked for me. Locate the app, right click and choose "Run as Administrator". Updates should work then.

yes his is the workaround, but Logos needs to find a fix for this as some users are not savvy enough to get that

I changed all file, folder, drive, and shortcut permissions in all the advanced menus.While researching I found that permissions in Vista (I don't know about Win7) only work on NTFS drives. The M:\drive where I installed Logos4 was Fat32. After formatting to NTFS and clicking the shortcut to run as an administrator, the updater worked fine.

Vista and Win7 only install to an NTFS drive for that reason. I'm surprised the M; drive needed elevated permission because a drive outside the system or C: drive usually is given "Everyone" permission, especially if it is or was FAT32. NTFS is a better system than FAT32 so the effort is not wasted. Must have been something on C: drive that needed the admin privilige.

I too encountered this error. For the initial install and the first several SR's there was no problem with permissions. With SR-6 and SR-7, I have initially had the failure "Error writing to file." Considering that the ostensible raison d'etre of installing into the bizarre location of Users\<username>\AppData was to avoid security issues, I find this error and the workaround of needing to run as an Administrator somewhat ironic. Installing the entire application into AppData has, for me, really caused usability headaches. What they have done is to totally violate the standard that has been set for installing software on a Windows machine as outline by Microsoft in their whitepapers an example of which can be found here.

Brand new studio xps with 8 gig ram.

I did as was advised here (right click, run as administrator) but received this message

c\user\appdata\local\logos4\logos4.exe is not a valid win32 application

This does not solve the problem on one of my computers. I just put up with it. I am running as a user with admin privileges on that machine and it still asks me to aprove every isntall of updates. I have not done anything differently on that machine than I did on my others that do not ask for this.

Here's what I did and it worked for me.

I am using Windows 7 Business and I essentially have two accounts, my personal account (which is not a part of my work's domain) and my work account (which is the account I used to install Windows 7).

I went into the main account (my work account, which is the one I used to install Windows) and did the following:

"Start," "Control Panel," "Change Account Type."
This window showed me the two user accounts I have on my computer (my work one and my personal).
I selected the personal account and clicked "Properties."
Under "Groups," I typed in "Administrators" (no quotation marks when typing it in)
Click "Check Name" and then "Apply."

Once I logged back into my personal account, the update applied. This may not be the right solution for all of you, especially if you're running a Windows 7 Home version, but I thought I'd post it, as it worked for me.

I think the overall problem is that for whatever reason, Logos 4 needs administrator access to install updates and clicking on "Run As Administrator" doesn't work in this scenario (it didn't work for me). Anyway, I hope that helps. Some of you may need to contact Logos support to receive help with your particular version of Windows.

Windows 7 Home and Pro users would simply assign an Administrator account through Control Panel | User Accounts! However I have successfully installed L4 as a Standard User and updates are applied without problem because I never used "Run as Administrator"! If elevation is required I wait until prompted and then supply the Admin password.

I have the same problem October 2011 updating v4.
Frustrating. I have all admin priveldges and never installed the product using "run as admin". I don't even use a password on Windows 7 x64 with all updates applied.
