Why take "empty" Layout snapshots?

I just counted to something like 13 or 14 "empty" Layout snapshots in a row! What's the sense in taking and saving a Layout snapshot when not even a single panel is open? It's not exactly a bug, I guess, but it certainly clutters up the Layout dropdown and makes it harder to find anything relevant.

+1 [Y] for not taking snapshot layouts of home page nor empty layouts.

Personally tend to right click and delete "useless" snapshot layouts.

I really don't see the point of it taking snapshots as almost all of them are "useless." I don't know how it decides when to take a snapshot but it certainly wouldn't win any photography awards!

Yes, I noticed the x's had suddenly disappeared and been replaced by right-click deletion. Don't remember seeing that in any release notes. One thing less to delete by accident. Now if they could just implement the same change for Notes.

This thread is a 'mac' thread and I suppose a mac problem; I've not seen such on the PC side. Kind of tells you about 'code re-use'.

But let's not discourage saving the populated layouts automatically .... since Logos will NOT identify which layout you're using (which for me could have been loaded DAYS ago), saving 'current layout' to the wrong layout can be a considerable disaster.

Of course they also will NOT allow simply updating the layout you've got loaded either. Have to pick 'the right one'.

Destroying my big-boy layout happened to me 2 days ago. And I have only 2 layouts for goodness sakes.

Discourage? I would encourage it. If populated layouts were saved, I wouldn't get 13-14 empty ones in a row, would I? But for some reason there are virtually never any snapshots taken when my layout is populated, unless I do it manually.

When I have a crash, for example, and open up again, it always seems to open to some layout I updated and closed hours earlier, and there's never any snapshot to take me back to even an earlier version of what I was actually working on. If I can't remember all of it, it's simply lost. Which makes all the unnecessary ones even more annoying.

Yeah, but that's one. I wouldn't be complaining if I too had one. Or even two-three. Usually I have 6-7 in a row, then one or two populated ones, and then a new set of empties, which is already way too much -- but when I found 13-14 in a row I decided the time had definitely come to speak up.

That is indeed a pain to have that many show up in a row. So perhaps this is a problem with the Mac version.

i am not sure how it showed up in the PC version, perhaps when i used Close All in the command bar.

i hope that they are able to reproduce your issue and fix it!

Strange, I only have 3 total in L4 Mac. After reading Steve's post following yours, I was going to ask if you used "Close All' very often. But then I remembered that I use Cmd-Opt-W on a regular basis. I do have a lot of useless snapshots, however. I have 4 from February 2010, and they are all the same layout. Since I use L4 Mac a few hours almost every day, why would I have layouts that are over 2 years old?

Snapshots definitely need an overhaul.

Not a chance. I do not keep L4 open, so I do open and close it a lot. (I only have the programs running that I am using at the time, I do not keep them open just to have them open).

You would think that if the current layout is the same as the previous layout, whey save the current layout?

Here's the most absurd part of my long row:

Three in less than an hour! I think I know what I did then, though: I closed all, closed Logos, restarted the computer and Logos, started a Library reindex, and closed Logos down again.

Perhaps I should clarify. Those 4 elder statesmen are not blank, but they are all the same layout.

This is a sometimes useful feature that needs improvement.

Ah, but those are named, so they're supposed to be saved until you delete them. I thought you were talking about automatic snapshots that hadn't been automatically deleted after some time.

It's still weird that there's 4 of them, though. Perhaps there was some bug back then that you have long since forgotten about?

Perhaps these are corrupted Snapshots in the DB. i've seen several times on the forum where a corrupted layout prevented some people from opening L4. So perhaps these are corrupted and just not the current layout being opened (thus not creating critical problem) and at one time they had real layout info for those snapshots.

You made me curious, so I tried the last two in the list. Both opened without incident. As expected, they are identical. Don't know why there are four, but otherwise they seem normal. They are all still at 02/01/10, even though the layout was opened today. I have seldom used the historical layouts, so do not know how it normally acts.

When I first wrote this I thought it was just a 'clutter' issue. However, after deleting about 25 (!) empty shapshots some days ago, my Layout menu now opens almost instantaneously instead of needing several seconds (and sometimes a beach ball as well), so it's clearly more than just a clutter issue. The difference is so significant that it's well worth the effort to remove them manually. Only I shouldn't have to. Not for empty ones.

I did the same thing, and I noticed the same results. I am still wondering why L4 is taking 'empty' snapshots.
