Windows 8 compatible? If so when?
I'm looking to get a Windows 8 tablet to run Logos 4 on and wondered if Logos 4 will be compatible with Windows 8? And if so by when? Thanks heaps!

The current version of Logos 4 should run on Windows 8 Release Preview with no major incompatibilities. (Internal testing has shown that sometimes the .NET Framework 3.5 will not be installed automatically and has to be installed manually before Logos 4 can be installed. One beta tester reported that videos didn't play, but we were unable to reproduce this, so it may be a driver issue.)
If any crashes or major incompatibilities are found, we plan to address them before the final version of Windows 8 is shipping.
Logos 4 is not touch-enabled, but we plan to address that in a future release. I can't currently say with certainty when that update will be available.

Windows 8 has got me excited because it means that the possibility of a Logiest app for Windows Phone looks much more likely since C++ development is supported.

Please enlighten me. What is a "logiest app"?

While C++ has something to do with it, the most important thing for Logos app for a windows phone is the number of users.

From my experimentation, Logos does work on Win 8, but will only install if you are logged in as an admin user (this means you can't use web filtering), this is more of a problem because Logos forces single user installation. On a tablet there are more problems because most tablets do/will have small SSDs and Logos does not let you control how much of your library gets downloaded and were it is stored. If only I could find a way do "downgrade" my Logos library, I could install it on my tablet. :-(

Thanks for the bug report; we'll investigate. (What should happen is that Logos 4 prompts for an administrator's password in order to install system components, then installs the rest of the program for the logged-in non-admin user account.)

This is not true on my iPad, it only downloads resources I specifically download. It also seems, for reading plans, to only download a few pages at a time if you have not explicitly downloaded the resource.

I think that by "tablets", he meant "Windows 8 Tablets that can run Windows desktop applications", not "iPad/Android tablets". The desktop app (installed on a Windows 8 tablet) will download all resources by default.
In response to the original poster's complaint, Logos 4 does let you control where the library is stored; when you first install the program, you can set the installation folder (by choosing a custom installation). All resources and indexes are stored under this installation folder. (If you have a small boot SSD, this would let you install Logos 4 on a larger, spinning disk.)

Since those tablets don't exist yet, and Logos doesn't run on Windows 8 tablets yet, to make a definitive statement like "Logos does not let you control how much of your library gets downloaded" is false. By the time Windows 8 tablets are out and Logos has an app that runs on it (IF they do, there has been no definitive statement that I am aware of), it just might work like iOS/Android, no? Obviously someone made the decision of downloading everything to iOS/Android, even though it works that way on the desktop, was problematic...

Yes, I am talking about a x86 windows 8 tablet. (I am testing on a Acer W500 with the latest beta of Windows 8) The issue with the hard-drive is that many if the soon to be released win8 tablets will have relatively small solid state hard-drives. The Surface Pro that looks like it will turn out to be the dream machine for Logos users comes only with 64 and 128 GB options. A large logos library takes up a significant portion of that hard-drive. Obviously this will not be an issue for a metro port of the Logos mobile app.
The issue with where the library gets installed is that when you are not logged in as the same Windows user as first installed Logos, it downloads your Library to your user folder without asking, but you can only install Logos when logged in as an admin user. I was able to bypass this by temporarily making my user an admin user. But, now the indexer will not run (hence I see no stuff in my library). I am not sure if this is a Windows 8 thing or the fact that Logos is on a secondary drive.
I am assuming all the kinks will be worked out after Windows 8 is released. I am just posting my experiences here for those of us who can not wait.

It's more likely that the indexer will not run if there is no stuff in Library!
Normally, when downloaded you will see (all) resources in Library whilst they are being indexed. So this may be related to your user privilege issue if trying to index as a Standard user.

As for new higly expected Microsoft tablets Surface 8Pro / RT - they come with different version of Windos 8 OS called Windows RT which DOES NOT ALLOW installing x86/64 desktop software. This version of Windows 8 called RT is not compatible with Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.

So I guess Logos 4 won't work on these tablets [:(]

Welcome to the forums Pavel [Y]
As far as I know there should be 2 types of Windows 8 tablets. Not only Windows RT (ARM processors) tablets (that will not be compatible with the current version of Logos 4) but also Windows 8 (Intel processors) tablets that will most probably run Logos 4 in today's version.

Thank you very much for reply. It is good news [:)]
After serching web I found out, that new tablets have Intel Core i5 (Ivy Bridge) and full version of Win 8 OS. Hoping the price will be moderate...

Yes, if price is not too extreme, I am ready to change my iPad for the new (Intel processor, Windows 8) tablet.

Well, this sounds pretty 'netbook-deja-vu'. I'm not picking on any of the W8 concepts. Only Logos4's demand for raw power. We're going on 3 years and Logos still hasn't been brave enough to identify exactly what is needed to run Logos4 to have a decent user experience. Their minimum specs appear to be guesswork. Maybe yes, maybe no. Kind of 'depends'.
I have a PC tablet, i7, lots of memory, SSD drive and 3 battery packs all to allow using Logos4 sitting out on the deck and to study the Bible; not the software. I'm sure it'll run W8 and maybe Logos4 a little better.
I doubt all the Mac and Windows gizmos are going to be fun with Logos until it's re-written.

But what about WinRT (ARM based) tablets, are there any plans for a metro style app for them. The Surface tablet looks very interesting but the first version will be based on WinRT, so it will not run desktop apps.

This issue should be fixed for beta users in 4.6a Beta 3 for beta users, and in general when 4.6a ships to the stable channel.

Whoops. I meant "Logos" not "Logiest." Sorry for the confusion.

I am looking to get a convertible (notebook/tablet) in the next few weeks. I have been a Linux user and had to put my Logos software on the shelf for awhile. I am leaning towards purchasing the Lenova Yoga 13 (curently available) or the Lenova Thinkpad Twist which is being released on October 26th. I will split the SSD drive and place uBuntu Linux on part of the drive. The rest of the drive will remain Windows 8 and I will load my Gold Scholar Logos software. I would be curious to know what convertibles you are looking at?

Welcome [:D]
One option is running Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox 4.2 (or newer, noticed 4.2.2 was available on 18 Oct 2012); which would need enough memory for two operating systems to be loaded at the same time. Noticed Lenova Thinkpad Twist supports up to 8 GB of RAM so could dedicate 3 GB for a Windows virtual machine to run Logos, which is a 32 bit application.
If plan to dual boot ubuntu and Windows 8, suggest adding ubuntu to the Windows boot menu and let Windows 8 be the primary boot option.
Keep Smiling [:)]

Great idea! I am reading the VM manual now. Thanks!

Bradley,
I just got a Windows 8 tablet (ASUS) and installed Logos on it. However, when I try to boot the app I get an error message saying that the "Logos Indexer" has stopped working. This then causes the program to crash. Sometimes it does load correctly but then I have absolutely no resources in my library. It is completely empty. The application is still trying to download updates but only does so when it is running which is only a short period of time before it crashes. I wonder if the updates will help?
Anyway, I'm just wondering if you have any ideas as to what may be causing this. If it is the .NET Framework, where would I find the file so as to install it?
Thanks,
Bryan

Hi Bryan - and welcome to the forums.
I suggest you start a new thread and post diagnostic logs after Logos has crashed and before restarting it.
Details on providing logs are available at http://www.logos.com/support/logos5/windows/logging
