Resource Assistance

I have a friend who is looking for a Bible Study (not devotional) commentary on the book of Romans. It needs to be non-denominational and ecumenical (about 25% of her group is catholic - the rest coming from a variety of protestant backgrounds). I recommended the Interpreters commentary series as one place to start. Are there any resources on LOGOS that might meet this criteria.

Floyd, no suggestions but you might change the title of this post to 'Ecumenical Commentary on Romans???' (number of question marks totally optional). I think you might get more and quicker responses.

The NICNT commentary by Douglas Moo is superb. Unfortunately, it is only available in a very expensive set.

His Encountering the Book of Romans is available singly @ 24.99, but it is not nearly as detailed as the NIC volume.

Your friend might want to check out one of the following:

I searched in Logos and even though I don’t own these resources I have used others by these authors. I have used a different one in N.T. Wright’s series and found it helpful. I have also found Witherington’s work to be well done in both what I have read of his work (including his blog). I have used other books in the Encountering Series so the one on Romans should be good.

Moo's Encountering the Book of Romans is very good, but from a conservative evangelical standpoint. I gave it to our Adult Sunday School teachers when we studied Romans last year. They found it helpful.

I haven't actually read them, but this seems like a good suggestion. Wright is an important Paul scholar and read in pretty much all camps, plus the books are written "for everyone", and not that expensive.

Can't speak for within Logos, but certainly any study by Kay Arthur and Precept Ministries is excellent as they do not take a denominational stand but simply get you into the Bible to see what's there. I've been using them for years and have a study group with both Catholics and Protestants.

Their New Inductive Study series volume on Romans is called "Experiencing the Power of Life-Changing Faith". This is based on about 20 mins of study per day, a 13-week series. If you wish to go deeper, they also have their Precept series on Romans (in 4 parts!) That's based on about an hour's study per day and gets into lexicons and so forth.

Either way, I can't recommend them enough. Helped me get right into God's Word as a new Christian!

Yes, Wright is read in all camps. However, he's read in some of those camps because he's extremely controversial. Not quite what the OP had in mind, I think.

I don't have a Logos suggestion, but I did like Swindoll's Insights into Romans. It's available on Amazon and if you have a kindle, it could be gotten in a matter of minutes.

Yes, Wright is very controversial. That wouldn't be a good starting place, nor would it be a good option if you were only looking to buy one commentary on Romans. You might want to look at the NAC by Robert Mounce.
