I just started the First Hebrew Primer. In lesson 1 when the vowels are pronounced they sound the same whether it is a dot or dash below the consonant.  Will this change as I get farther along?

in our pronunciation guide (Pratico & VanPelt) we were taught the "dot" is an Hireq and is pronounced as the i in bitter. the "dash" is a Pathach and is pronounced as the a in bat.

Of course there are several pronunciation schemes which is part of the reason why the Hebrew pronunciation tool as has never been implemented in L4.

We Southern boys could really use that Hebrew pronunciation resource.

Most of us don't even pronounce the vowels in English words the same way twice.  For example, did you know that the "a" in "again" is not the long "a"?  That had me confused for week about how to pronounce the Pathach.  Our Hebrew grammar said it sounded like "a in again".  (I used to drive my Hebrew teacher crazy in seminary.  Bless Wade Paschal's heart.  No wonder he gave up teaching to become a pastor.)

I finally decided that we from the Southern Kingdom did well just to read Hebrew, and not worry too much about pronunciation.  Maybe Logos' future Hebrew pronunciation tool will be able to help me with that.

I was also eager to get a head start when I tackled Hebrew. There may be some wisdom in waiting for your Professor to lay things out in a sequential way so that you don't have to unlearn bad assumptions.
