The original Jesus movement, when our Lord walk on the earth with his disciples was known as "The Way"

My question is what are the best translations of the english phrase "The Way" in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. This is for a shirt design I am working on.

Matthew 3:3 quotes Isaiah 40:3, “Prepare the way for the Lord.”

Jesus tells his followers, “Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matt. 7:14 NKJV). In a key conversation with his disciples, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

As we pointed out in the introduction, this was a radical statement. To say he was the way, the truth, and the life was to allude to being the personification of the Torah, the living Word of God. For devout Jews in the first century, the Torah was the Way. How could Jesus be the Torah? Was he claiming to be the Messiah? Was he claiming to be God?

Jesus is that narrow gate, that way to God. In the vast majority of verses containing the word way, the Greek is hodos, which is often used literally, meaning a path or road, or the way a person travels “on his way.” It also serves as a metaphor for behavior or thinking, or a way of life.

We use the word way in English to describe the method for doing something, saying, “This is the way you do it.” This is true in Greek as well. For example, in Acts 16:17 and elsewhere we see “the way to be saved.”

Hodos refers to an actual path or roadway when it describes blind men “sitting by the way side” in Matthew 20:30 (KJV), or seed that “fell by the way side” in Jesus’ parable in Matthew 13:4 (KJV). Sometimes it means where you are going literally, physically; and at other times, it means where you’re headed philosophically or in life.

In Luke 20, we read of the religious leaders trying to trap Jesus. They send spies to ask him questions. In verse 21, these spies say to him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Jesus casually asks to see a coin and gives them a brilliant answer. But we mustn’t miss the spies’ attempt at flattery: they use “the way” and “the truth” when describing Jesus’ teaching. They were giving him a high compliment – that he taught Torah and taught it well. They were saying he was highly orthodox – exactly the opposite of what they truly thought of him. Those words, “the way” and “the truth,” were words the Jews used to describe the Torah. But Jesus sees through their false flattery.

The first-century believers, before they became known as Christians, were known simply as “followers of the Way” (see Acts 22:4). In Acts 24, Paul is accused of being a “ringleader of the Nazarene sect” (v. 5) – which referred to the first Christians, of which Paul had become a part (Jesus was a Nazarene). He says, in his own defense: “I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets, and I have the same hope in God as these people themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked” (vv. 14–15 TNIV).

Here Paul says he is a part of the Way. That means, he explains, that he is thoroughly Jewish, believes in resurrection, and is also a follower of Jesus. They didn’t only follow Jesus, but also believed in the sanctity of the Scriptures – not the New Testament, because it wasn’t written yet. They were living out the Torah in the way they had been taught by their rabbi, Jesus.

We often misunderstand Jesus as “the way,” thinking it means simply that he is the only path to God, the way to get to heaven. While this is true, we must, like those early Christians, walk in the Way of his Word and live as part of the kingdom of God here and now."
