Ideal Computer Configuration to use Logos V4 Platinum

I am brand new to Logos Systems. I have Logos Platinum V4. I notice my laptop stops operating several times. I have 2 Gig RAM and 250 HD with 2 Gig Processor. I turn a lot of pages in my study. Do I need a better computer sytems for ideal and faster performance?

If Logos is still indexing, expect it to be very slow. Leave your computer turned on overnight to ensure the indexing completes. You'll know whether it's still indexing if you can see a blue logos icon in your system tray near the clock. Right click on the icon to double-check.

If it's not still indexing, you'll find it apparently freezes occasionally, but only for a second or two when you do something major, like switch Layouts.

If you're getting more than this, perhaps something is wrong.

Here are the minimum, recommended,
and optimal specs for computer wanting to run L4. Hope this helps you
out. Maybe it will be a chance to upgrade!

Minimum System Specs

Here are the tentative system requirements:

Pentium 4
1GB RAM
Windows XP SP3
DVD-ROM
1024x600 display
128MB DirectX 9 graphics device
12GB hard drive space (Platinum requires 10GB + 2GB temporary indexing space)
Internet connection required for activation

Recommended System Specs

Core 2 Duo
3GB RAM
Windows 7
DVD-ROM
1280x1024 display
512MB DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
20GB hard drive space (may need even more for “Portfolio”)
Broadband Internet connection

Optimum System Specs

For best results . . .

Core i7 920 or higher
6GB or more of DDR3 Tri-channel RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium or Higher
DVD-ROM
1680x1050 or higher (i.e., 1920x1200 or 2560x1600)
GeForce GTX 275 or Radeon HD 4890 or higher with 896MB or more of RAM and DirectX 10
Intel X25 SSD; 40GB of free space
Broadband Internet connection

First: Welcome to Logos! As you already know it's a great bit of software.

Is your processor a single core or dual/multiple core?

Logos is a "hungry" program - it will use all the power you can give it. Specifically Logos likes:

CPU a multicore CPU like the new Intel's
RAM, the more the better - of course if you have more that 4GB of RAM you'll need a 64bit operating system to access it.
VIDEO: Logos will operate better with an add on video card with a good amount of RAM (eg. 256MB or more, preferably more.) If you have built in or integrated video on your motherboard, remember that it will use some of your 2GB RAM to operate thus limiting what you have.
Hard Drive: provided you have room left over on your HD that should be fine.

The upgrade question is difficult, because many of us simply cannot afford to upgrade, we must use L4 as we are able. For the rest, anyone who can upgrade or is thinking about it, will want to consider it a good idea.

Thanks a lot for responding, all three of you, so far. That was just the info i needed. I probably will use this as a reason (excuse) to get a new computer.

According to this thread, http://community.logos.com/forums/p/4407/34778.aspx#34778 the optimum is a quad core. Not many Mac users currently have one of those unless they have a Mac Pro or the most recent iMac which sports a quad core. As far as I know, none of the Macbook Pros have quad core yet.

Minimum specs are usually frustrating because they are at the level in which a system can just barely get by. Will L4/Mac run acceptably on the current MacBook Air or the Mac Mini's--the low end Mac portables and desktops, respectively? What about the student favorite--the $999 MacBook running at 2.1 ghz?

The real question is whether or not a mid-range Mac, say any of the laptops running around 2.4 to 2.5 ghz and 2 GB of RAM, could run the software (once it's out of alpha and beta, of course) in a way in which the program is responsive, fast and not a frustration to use. What Mac will the normal user (not the power user) want to use with L4/Mac?

There's already indication that L4/Win may not get much faster (see Bob Pritchett's comments from a few days ago). I'm not a programmer, and do not begin to understand the complexities of ".NET with WPF," but Bob said "it basically involves loading a system within a system on your computer." A lot of folks are already having to do that to run L3 or L4 for Windows on their Macs by running them in virtualization via Parallels or Fusion. What's a fully developed L4 going to run like on the Mac? Surely it would be better than having to run a virtual OS. Does .NET with WPF run well on Macs?

As a rule, if PC performance on the software I use has become more of an irritant than a blessing, it's time for a new one... Though I used to build them as a hobby, the current speed of "off-the-rack" solutions has left me buying them instead.

When I shop, I look for the knee of the price-performance curve. If you plot increasing performance on the Y-axis & increasing cost on the X-axis, there's a point--a sweet spot, at which increasing performance starts costing a lot more. IMO, that's the optimum place to invest for a 5-year desktop, or a 3-year laptop. If you get more than that, you did good... But those are about the useful lifespans of good hardware.

Just because the new CPUs are here doesn't mean the desktops equipped with previous-generation processors are now obsolete. We sort through the "older" CPU-equipped desktops and find some great bargains.

Understand that just having a quad core system with lots of ram and fast hard drive will not mean necessarily fast Logos 4 performance just as slower systems don't necessarily mean slower Logos 4 performance.

Some of us are having a terrible time with very slow performance. But there seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Some of us have faster pcs while others have slower. What you might want to ask is, those who have not problems with speed, what computer are your using and what software do you have installed and then get that.
