Is there a way to have a Spanish dictionary definition pop up when reading a Spanish resource and touching the "Look up" option?  If not, will this feature be added some time?

Daniel - This isn't an option. Have you tried using the Spanish version of the app?

  • Thanks, Alabama--that worked just fine!  When I chose "Indagar" the English definition of the Spanish comes up!

  • I spoke to soon...the dictionary is very limited, just using certain Spanish words that one might encounter in English (such as "Señor").

i hope this will be improved soon--I would love to use Logos to help me with my Spanish Bible reading!

  • Here's one thing I did:

    (1) Switch the iPad to Spanish in language settings

    (2) Open a Spanish Logis Bible

    (3) Select "Lookup"

    (4) The system will prompt you if you want to download a dictionary; say yes

    (5) After downloading, you will now have a Spanish dictionary

    (6) You can change the iPad back to English, but you will still have the dictionary

This is not a perfect solution, as this is a Spanish dictionary, not a Spanish English dictionary.

Daniel - I didn't understand you earlier, and I don't think you understand how the "look up" works. The "dictionary" definitions in the "Look up" feature don't come from Logos… they come from the Apple Dictionary. The only time you get info from Logos is when you are using a reverse interlinear resource and the "look up" bring up original language info. When you change your iPad settings to Spanish, it will want to use a spanish dictionary.

There isn't the ability in Logos to look up a spanish/english dictionary, nor would I expect this in the near future. I would expect the ability to use theological dictionaries from your library would come as a feature before a spanish/english dictionary.

Out of curiosity… Is there even a spanish/english dictionary in your Logos library?

    Yes, there is.

Too bad they're not going to allow you to choose what dictionary to use.  If you also have quite a few different Greek and Hebrew theological dictionaries, it would sure be nice to be able to specify which one to use.  The reverse interlinear doesn't seem to be dependent on books you have, though--it seems to be on the Logos server itself, because it doesn't work in offline mode.

I didn't say that... It just isn't a feature they have implemented yet. Originally, "look up" was ONLY for original language info. In a 2.x build, they added the ability to use the iOS dictionary 1) for resources without RI info or 2) for resources with RI info when offline.

I agree with your suggestions... its just that the mobile app isn't there yet. The mobile app can't do all the things that L4 can, and is therefore not a good replacement. Sometimes people ask questions along the lines: "Do you think Logos will ever add ______ to the mobile app." There is, of course, two answers. What the person really wants to know is "can I have this feature now, or next week at the latest." The answer is, of course, no. In the bigger picture, the answer is "maybe/probably... but perhaps not on the device you are using now."

I frequently read posts that say the mobile app will never be a replacement for the desktop app. On many levels I agree, but remember: the iPad is only 3 years old. 5-10 years from now the technology will be much different, and many features which are not available now on the mobile app may be available then.
