A message to spammers

Please stop sending posts on Logos forums.

These forums are dedicated and specific to Logos Bible Software and related subjects. When anyone visits these forums, they are specifically looking for information and discussion concerning Logos ONLY.

It becomes frustrating to wade through all of the unrelated posts on subjects such as movies and other non-related software. It is frustrating enough that if anyone would be interested in anything you offer, that interest is gone because of the aggravation.

If the purpose of your posts are to generate interest and revenue, it would be beneficial to post on forums/boards specific to the product you are advertising. Posting unrelated material here or any other such forum/board actually will produce frustration to the viewer/members and turn people against your product in such a way that the mindset will be "Legitimate or not, I don't want anything to do with this".

So, please think of the intended purpose or your post, and post appropriately. Of course, if the intended purpose is to generate frustration and aggravation, you are doing a disservice to those whose product your are listing and what a waste of valuable time and energy on your part.

Thank you. Your mission will be better served by forums devoted to the subject. [:)]

The whit is uncanny. Reported as SPAM! :D

Not quite sure I understand the comment/reply.

My intention in writing the post was to get the attention of the spammers posting unrelated information that is not welcomed here. It is frustrating to us Logos forum users who are here for a specific purpose, and that is to gain further insight on Logos issues. For the spammers that care somewhat about the target of their messages, they need to hear this. For the spammers who do not care one way or another, and their purpose is to induce frustration, this message will not matter. I do not know how the majority of spammers think or even if there is a common mindset amongst them because I am not a spammer, but I'm thinking that most of them just send messages without looking for a response. And if they briefly browse a board and happen to notice a post titled "A message to spammers", they may actually read it and consider what is said.

I doubt they will read it. They don't browse the forums they post in, and most of them probably don't consider themselves "spammers" -- they probably think they are doing legitimate advertising work.

And I think Alexander was just making a joke about the first responder who responded to your post. The :D at the end was a laughing smiley face.

I also think the "I.B. Spammin" post was a joke by some regular forum member who created a new account just for the purpose. I doubt any real spammer would (a) admit that they are a spammer, or (b) so graciously offer to cease and desist.

The problem is going to continue until Logos figures out a way to block them without hampering the legitimate posts of Logos users and inquirers. They can't require posters to have Logos accounts, because sometimes prospective customers post questions here to help them decide whether to buy Logos. They are, however, working on developing good heuristics that will weed out all or most of the spam, and nothing else. It's tricky. The spammers get smarter and smarter whenever they are blocked. You have to keep staying one step ahead of them. And they wouldn't do it if a certain (albeit minuscule) percentage of people didn't get tricked and click through on their links to make it worth their trouble.

Unfortunately, spammers tend to pick forums with large numbers of participants to spam. It has nothing to do with whether the content is relevant. They are just going for quantity, trying to find their magic tiny percentage of forum participants who will be gullible dummies.

Thanks Rosie. It doesn't make so much sense or purpose to me, and I was in the serious mode of thinking trying to make sense of and help solve a problem that probably will never make sense. I am now back to reality. lol  [:)]

    Rosie,

You have crushed my hopes. Until today, I thought that spamming was a game of gentlemen full of chivalry and with a rigid code of honor.

No honor among spammers?  My world is ending ... with a big laugh, thanks

It is, but only when the spammers are Monty Python, who are also known as the chivalrous Knights of the Round Table in search of the Holy Grail.

I would also point out that much of the spam is not simply an attempt at selling stuff, but links to illegal downloads of movies and such.  This probably precludes any chance at appealing to their good nature.

I think a more reasonable approach for a Christian related forum is to pray for the spammers;  I am currently praying that their computers spontaneously combust causing irreparable damage to the computers, but of course no SERIOUS bodily injury;  Although, I think it goes without saying that burned fingertips would be an awefully strong deterent.  [:P]

Disclaimer:  I hate using messaging, texting, and email for real communication.  If anything that I type to you seems like anything other than humble and respectful, then I have not done a good job typing my thoughts.

I doubt they will read it.

Also, 99.9% of spam is posted by bots.  While it might look like that the posts come from a person, it is just part of the programming in the bot to make the post look like it came from a person.

It also puts another link out there for Google to index, increasing the page rank of the target page whether or not anyone here clicks on it.

    Wow !

Rosie ! You are such an inspiration ! Now that my spammin career has come to an abrupt end, I was needing an Idea for a new avocation. Being a first responder sounds like an admirable gig.

Wanna see my new badge? Now , I know it pales in comparison to an MVP star, but I'm on the road to recovery.
