The title of this thread came from a spam post this morning. A spam post that could have easily been prevented. An amateur coder could craft a filter to factor post counts with external links and block the plethora of spam posts we have seen lately. If Logos is not willing to dedicate a live moderator to preventing it at least use a bot. Are the spammers more adept than Logos staff? I think not! They are just more dedicated. Zip it! 'Nuff said.

Problem is the differentiation between spammers and real newbie users (who typically come here either for info before buying or with a problem that needs solving). There have been numerous threads discussing possible measures.

It seems that Logos already catches lot of the real plethora, but even the number of those coming through is too high. I think a whitelist for existing customers is necessary, maybe coupled with a post-count threshold for forum regulars that use another mail adress here than their licence.

One point, the external links: obviously the forum editor gives ways to create them. I'd recommed disabling html or whatever code is accepted beyond the edit field buttons. Other spammers put the links into their signature footer. This again should only be allowed for whitelisted users. And restrictions for new posts must apply for editing of existing posts as well: the spammer I just reported had again three posts (I assume an internal counter blocks more) - the last of these was just one line of text without a link when I reported it and the block inviting some video streams was edited in afterwards.

It is not that hard to tell the difference. I stopped all of the spam on the website that I control. There is one easy way (VERY VERY VERY EASY) to tell the difference between a bot and a person. It takes a person time to make a post; a bot responds almost immediately.

I am not convinced that the Logos spammers we see coming through really are automated - and do you think a bot programmer can't insert a delay(1000) or whatever in his script (or treat other pages before coming back here)? Lots of legitimate users seem to pre-write in Word and just copy over - enjoying all of us with a line of gibberish text - which would also be "almost immediately" between opening the edit window and posting.

But maybe Logos can take up some of the suggestions and really stop the spam.

Another simple solution is to put posts by new posters into an 'awaiting moderation' bucket, hidden from other forum users until approved. If a new 'user' posts spam he gets banned by the moderator. A lot of blogs do this - posts are only accepted immediately from trusted users.

BTW, a bot will make its post in a few milliseconds, far longer than a click New Post, paste in content and click Post would take. So stopping bots should be easy. Most bot authors probably wouldn't put a delay into their routines as their aim is achieving high volumes...

I used a time delay of .5 seconds, and a simple algorithm to mask the date/timestamp as a phrase.

Well clearly we've been talking about this for quite a while now. I'd assume Logos is pretty much comfortable with escorts going to private rooms.

(Of course it's hard to fit a little Ford in a private room but maybe by turning it sideways. I don't know why the spam author didn't use the word 'garage').

That's one solution they can/should not use. New posters tend to turn up Friday night or Saturday, and they usually turn up because they have a crash or some other serious issue that prevents them from finishing their Sunday sermon. Putting them in a 'moderation bucket' until Monday morning kind of obstructs the whole purpose of the forums.

Require e-mail confirmation and do whatever else is necessary, but don't shut the door to the forums to those who most need it.
