Suggestion on forum replies

When viewing a thread it will tell you so-and-so replied, with replied being a link back to whatever comment they've replied to. Would it be possible to expand this a little, something like "#58, Chris Roberts replied to John Smith (57)" with #58 being this message number in the current thread and (57) being the number of the message I've replied to? This would make back-and-forth a little easier to track without having to go to a full threaded view, something I personally don't care for on web forums.

I know this is a very old thread so I'm not replying to the original poster who is probably not reading this anymore, but to the bumper.
This isn't really necessary. You can always click on the "Replied" link to see what post the person is replying to. I think adding post numbers and info about who and what post number each poster is replying to would add clutter to the forums. And you'd still have to scroll back (perhaps even through many pages of that forum thread) to find the post number in question if it was just referenced by post number. Far better to click the "Replied" link and jump immediately to that actual post. Then you can click the "Back" button in your browser to get back to where you were.

Actually, a popup with the post replied to displayed when hovering over the word Replied: would be quite nice, but there are far more important things to fix with the forums.

Thanks Rosie I was not away of this option.
