4.6a Release Candidate 1 (4.61.0.3347) is available for download. An RC is considered a stable version.

To update to 4.6a RC 1, enter the Update Now command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before. If you currently have a stable version installed (such as 4.6 SR-2) and do not want to receive future beta updates, install from the download links on this thread. If you want to receive future beta updates, enter the Set Update Channel to Beta command to download RC 1.

Added new field types for Sermons and Illustrations. When these fields are added, the compiler will automatically generate indices at the end of the book by speakers and venues. For sample documents see this thread.

The new field types are:

Maybe I'm missing something. I go to Tools -> Personal Boks -> Add Book and thought under "type" I'd see Sermons or Illustrations but see neither. Also I don't see Speakers or Venues listed but that's probably because I can't select a Sermon or Illustration as the "type." Am I in the wrong place in L4 to utilize this function?

The syntax is added via a table in your .docx file; it isn't a particular type in the metadata in the Personal Books panel. Hope that helps!

When you click on the hyper-link you are taken to 2 Word cocuments.

OPEN the 2843.SermonFileMetadataTableSample.docx - it contains the syntax codes needed to produce these features.

You must copy one of the tables with the syntax code into your word docx file and fill in the appropriate values in the fields. (best to put the table in after the title)

The codes look like this:

So you are not adding information in the Tools/PB creator. Rather this information goes into your word docx.

Does that make sense?

When you do that your document will look something like this: (with an index at the end of the article/book etc)

Any plans that it could be put through the Personal Books panel? It would be a whole lot easier than trying to remember where where I put the file with that table or open up another sermon to copy and paste that table to new file.

Having it through the PBB panel especially would be wonderful because that would be the only step needed to update date and venue if one where to use the sermon or illustration again in the future. Otherwise it seems, if I'm understanding correctly, if I were to use the message again, I'd have to open up the file again, edit the fields and reupload the docx file in the PBB panel.

The Sermon File-Addin was supposed make sermon/illustration management easier no?

Yes, that is correct.

It may not be ideal, but I keep at shortcut to that document pinned to my Word 2010 icon which is pinned to my desktop tool bar.

One major benefit to having the sermon index table in the word document itself is that one PB may contain many sermons. If the sermon index table were part of the PB Panel then it would be hard (if not impossible) to capture meta-information for each sermon in the PB and to create an index from that information.

That's true... I can clearly see the reason to have that table for this set of sermon books. I tend to not like that from the MS Word standpoint, for it would take a long time to find if they were gathered within one book. Maybe they could do this. Continue to keep the tables (no point in removing it) but also having it in the PB panel for those who prefer one sermon one file.

I feel really badly asking this, but I fail to see how this is helpful. When the book is built the Index is created at the end of the file, as stated, and each field name from the table at the beginning has a link pointing to the sermon title at the top of the page...

So, I suppose the metadata created must be useful in some way that I have missed. I have tried to follow many of the Sermon File discussions and threads, but I suppose I missed this one.

Each metadata table should follow the title of the sermon it goes with. I think these titles need to be headings to start new articles and generate table of contents entries, but there may be other ways to achieve the same result. You can check the help files or hopefully someone who has used it more can chime in. The metadata table will always refer back to the last article and table of contents entry it follows. If there is only one at the start of the book, they will all refer back to that one.

It only points to the first sermon/article IF that information is alphabetically first.

In the following image under "Topics" the first listing is not from the first sermon. Nor is the Scripture. However the first listing under date is as it comes first numerically. Similarly the Speaker field refers to the first sermon due to the "C" of Charles Spugeon coming earlier in the alphabet than the otehr two speaker's names.

On the other hand... there are some things that it might be possible to put in the PB panel.

In the panel, there could be a type for sermon / illustration files. Or even for a generic collection of items that uses the index syntax tables.

Once that type was selected (or some other selector was checked) it might be possible to have some options like whether or not the sermon index table information should be visible in the document or not.

Is it too much to ask of Logos that they give us back the Sermon Add-In file that we paid for under Logos 3 - a $50 option? It was never this complicated. Moreover, PB does not integrate with Logos 3 sermon file, nor does it post sermons to sermons.logos.com. Overall, using PB for sermons is the wrong solution.

Have you tried the Sermon file Import command introduced by the Logos 4.6c beta & 5.1 beta? There's a few bugs, so I'd wait until the next beta to try it.

And you can still use your compiled Libronix Sermon file (*.lbxlls) as a resource in Logos. If you don't see "Sermons of xxxxx" in Library you can use the scan command to get it.

It was never this complicated.

I haven't found any of the problems stated earlier as long as the sermon titles have the same Word Heading style (e.g. Heading 1) followed by the metadata table. Whilst I'm not an avid user of the feature, I have found the PB method to be easier than the Libronix add-in.

I'm really sorry you aren't happy with the way we're doing Sermon File now; we'd hoped that the new Personal Books system would be easier (letting you work in Word rather than our wiki syntax), and we're planning something different for online sermons.

We haven't 'taken away' Sermon File -- what you got originally still works and runs -- but, of course, we've changed how that functionality is supported in the newer product. (This is an inevitable part of how products change; many old features disappear in new releases, or are implemented differently.)

But not everyone likes that, or agrees with the changes, so I'm happy to credit you the price of your investment in the original Sermon File; email me directly (bob@logos.com) and I'll take care of it.
