V4 Installation as Power User

Hi,

I am just trying to install V4. I downloaded the setup file. When I run the file Logos4Setup.exe, it downloads 19 MB for the Logos 3 Prerequisites Installer. After the file downloaded, the download window closes and it tries to run again Logos4Setup.exe. And this seems to keep happening. The actual install never occurs.

I am trying to install the software as Power User in Windows XP, not as Administrator. Have any of you succeeded to install V4 as Power User?

I am quite sure you must be an administrator to install Logos4.

In theory you can be a standard user and install L4 provided you can get Admin privilige, which should work in Vista and Windows 7. But I would suggest you install as Admin in Windows XP (you can switch back to Power User afterward).

Speaking off the cuff: Richard and Dave are you sure? I thought that was why L4 installed in user/user/appdata so that you would have the authority needed no matter how you were installing?

I don't think you need admin privileges, in fact installing with admin privilege seems to cause more problems later with UAC.

No I'm not absolutely sure. But I believe that the initial installation has to be done as an administrator in order to allow all the behind the scenes stuff to happen. I also believe (but am not sure) that after the initial install, the program can update itself and download resources without administrator privileges.

But these beliefs seem to be consistent with what others are finding on these forums. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I hate being wrong and not knowing that I'm wrong.

As for the UAC, I wouldn't be able to say, since I'm the only user on this computer, I always run with full privileges and with the UAC off (even in Win7 I find it too intrusive).

If you install by "Run as Admin" in Vista or Win 7 you set up privileges that then require they be exercised with every update! So you execute normally and if Admin privilege is required you grant it (usually because you are running in an Admin account or are given/know the credentials running a normal user account).

Windows XP has a different security model so it is best to install as Admin because a normal user can't install programs! A Power User might be able to update, but not have enough privilege for install (in XP).

It did not work as Power User. I made the account that I normally use an administrator and am installing now. Later, I will switch this account back to a Power User and hope all works.

There are a few system components (Microsoft Visual C++ runtime DLLs, and fonts) that need to be installed as admin (Windows doesn't allow per-user installation of these items). On Vista/7, Logos4Setup will elevate to install just those components, then revert to standard privileges to install the application. (As noted, you don't want to force the install to run as admin, because that will prevent updates installing non-elevated in future.)

On XP, you need to log in as admin, run Logos 4 setup (to install the system components), close the Sign In dialog, log in as your regular standard/power user, run Logos 4 Setup again, sign in, and complete the installation (by downloading and indexing).

Seriously? Is that documented anywhere but here? Any way you can separate the install components for XP? I don't know anyone but me that would do stuff like that and consider it acceptable.
