warning 1946

I remember reporting this one wayyyy back in the L4 beta group. It occurs randomly when there is an existing Logos Icon pinned to the task bar.

At that time there was less information on the dialog box.

Today it comes up with:

The information presented is more robust, but still sounds like programmer speak.

I'm assuming that means only that the label could not be changed from L4 to L5.

HOWEVER:

When I click it to load two things happen simultaneously.

1. L5 begins to load

2. I get a dialog saying "Can't open this item... want to remove it?

I expected the first, but not the second. For efficiency's sake I am going to remove the L4 icon and set a new L5 one.

I'll check again with our setup developer, but I believe this error message comes from Windows Installer and can't be suppressed by our setup (hence the "programmer speak").

(FWIW, forums for many other Windows products are reporting this same bug, e.g., http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/240/, http://communities.vmware.com/thread/390879. It may not be possible to work around; for a similar warning message, Microsoft's KB article states "This behavior is by design. You can safely ignore this warning message.")

I think this may be the only workaround; it seems like Windows Installer has problems upgrading pinned shortcuts.

Thinking out loud....

Would it be a good idea to put a first screen on the installer when an upgrade is noticed: "Please unpin any existing Logos 4 Shortcuts from your toolbar for a seamless install"?

Probably not, because it's just not an important issue really. But this is what happens when I have too much coffee.

further brainstorming...why not just have the installer code delete any shortcut first? I see other install programs that do that, I am trained to just re-pin myself if I have to. Sometimes it does get replaced (actually with Logos 5 my shortcut was replaced without a hitch, it must be some sort of permission problem).
