Suggested Again: Complete Oxford English Dictionary

I know that there have been other threads in the distant past about this, but I wanted to suggest this again with some concise information.

Reasons to have this dictionary over others:

1. The OED gives the history of the word throughout its usage, giving chronological context quotes for each iteration.

2. It is over 21,000 pages, with more than 500,000 words.

3. It traces variant spellings, regional characteristics, and detailed etymology.

Reasons it would benefit the publisher:

1. They are obviously concerned with piracy, as their old CD-Rom version had clunky copy protection that created widespread issues for users. Using Logos would create a more secure environment.

2. The many features available in Logos seem to lend themselves well to the OED, ie searching, tagging, etc...

3. Due to the nature of Logos users, I think that the publisher would be more likely to sell updates that are put out periodically, especially assuming they were available on Pre-Pub.

4. They could also integrate the Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary as a possible add-on purchase for those who really get excited about English words!

As you write, this has been suggested previously (for example, here). It seems, therefore, that there is interest in this. I wonder, however, whether, in addition, Logos would consider bringing the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (two volumes) as I can imagine that the full OED would be very, very expensive.

Nonetheless, this gets my [Y][Y]!

This has been requested before and seconded by many users every time.

I suspect Oxford is not a willing party. I seem to recall Oxford have/had a media-based (DVD/CD) version that is/was horrible, at least from reveiws I read.

Logos would get it right, and much more of course.

This is correct. I used to have it at one time.

It is also (or, at least, was) possible to access the resource via an online portal (at a subscription cost). Neither option was pretty. Both options were, in my opinion, expensive.

The web access for OED is very nicely done. I particularly like the easy ability to toggle between an abbreviated entry and the full entry including etymology and examples. I doubt Logos could easily replicate that.

I can't comment on pricing though, I get access for free through my seminary.

I have been going through the community pricing offerings and bidding on many of the literary and philosophical works, such as Shakespeare, Joyce, Hegel, etc..., and noted information such as, "The Logos edition of Joyce’s works is fully indexed and tagged, allowing for near-instant search results. Use the dictionary lookup tool to dig deeper in to Joyce’s novel use of English words."

Having the full Oxford English Dictionary would make these lookups so much more productive!

Butters emphatically agrees with this. His full OED is slowly being retired from his study to the living room, where it can join him and friends for cocktails. [D]

The reason being - it is so far superior to use the online version. He uses it via the Boston Athenaeum and for free (well, he pays for membership of course) - however, it would be amazing to have it integrated into Logos. This is especially true given where Logos appears to be headed.

It is such a great dictionary - he has spent many a glorious night (days, weeks, years? LOL?) getting lost in it. And the hyperlinked nature of the online version makes it even more superb, if that were possible.

Butters would also pay a fairly pretty penny to be able to use it via Logos.
