Syncing
How come syncing doesn't work for me. I have syncing on many other apps and it always works intuitively and automatically. But with Logos I use my iphone app out on the road during theday but when I get home and turn on my computer at night it has never synched to the right location on my computer. I have tried hitting the swirling arrows in the upper right hand corner. I have tried closing the app completely and even shutting down the iphone completely. I cannot get it to synched?
Any help?
Thanks,
Steve

Hey Stephen –
My guess is that syncing IS working, but just not as you expect. The app will open a resource to the last known synced location. My guess is that you already have these resources opened 1) in a panel on your mobile device and/or 2) in a saved layout on your computer. Logos doesn't change the location of your resource in a saved layout (since a saved layout is really like a snapshot in time). On the mobile app, Logos assumes that if you had a resource open, you will want to pick up where you left off when reading on the mobile app. Last I checked, the Kindle app does the same thing, although it also has a pop up which asks if you want to advance to the last known location on another device.

I've recently started using favourites to get the symchronization that you desire. As long as you use the mobile favourites folder, it provides essentially a bookmark for each resource and is available on all of your devices. It's a few clicks but it is easier than trying to remember where I was in the book.0

So if I want to pick up on the computer where I left off on the app...I have to close the panels in my workspace and re-open them??
That pop-up on the Kindle makes all the difference. Maybe an idea for Logos software people?

Absolutely. A saved layout is a snapshot in time. Any open resources are intended to stay put. EDIT: What I mean to say, is that you need to open or create a layout where the resource ISNT open and active. If you open a layout with the resource in question, it may sync that location to the servers and consequently open the resource to the same location after you close it.

ok, I know you must be right, and that I must be very stupid....but I cannot get synching between my iphone app and my computer. I think I have done what you mention above, but it doesn't work. Today on my iphone I read up to WBC Jer 16:1-21. Then I shut the Iphone down, even turning off the iphone completely. Then when I got home I opened Logos on my computer and opened a different Layout that had nothing to do with Jer or WBC. I went to the Library and clicked the WBC Jer commentary and it did not synch to my more advanced iphone position. It just opened where I was on my computer in Logos last night.
Of course, if I ever get this figured out I would also like to go the opposite direction and open my iphone app to where I left off on the computer the night before. But first things first.
While I am not a computer geek, I am not completely unfamiliar with these gadgets and software. I do this all the time with other apps. Yes, I know Logos is so much more complicated than everyone else's.....All I want to do is pick up where I left off in my reading/study when I switch gadgets.
Any other help would be appreciated.

OK. Here is a plan:
- Pick a book that you have NEVER opened. Make sure it is mobile enabled (preferably by visiting the resource's page on Logos and verifying that there is an iPhone Logo under the book cover).
- Create a brand new layout in L4.
- Open the resource in L4 and turn to the second chapter of the book. Force a sync by clicking on the sync wheel.
- Close the resource in L4.
- Open the resource on the mobile app. If things are working right, it should open to chapter 2.
- Open to chapter 6 (or another chapter). Close the app.
- Kill the app via the multi-task bar.
- Open the app again. Verify that the resource is still on chapter 6.
- Wait for the sync wheel to stop spinning.
- Open L4 and open the resource. It should be on chapter 6.
I just followed these steps to the letter and the sync worked for me. I don't normally follow these steps so technically… but just helping you to trouble shoot. A couple of notes: the desktop app syncs better than the mobile app does, and it is easier to sync (you can just click the sync wheel). The mobile app may need a nudge by creating a sync event (i.e. creating a highlight or note). In my steps above the sync event was starting Logos cold after "killing" the app.

I should have added a couple of things to reinforce what I said earlier:
When a resource in open in an L4 layout, its location is "locked in time" to when the layout was saved. This is intentional and desired behavior… you may have several studies going on at once. You can create a layout for each study and not worry about losing your place in resources shared between the study layouts.
When a resource is active/open in one of the two panels in the mobile app, it may not sync… although this behavior may have changed in more recent builds. When I experimented with this last, my experience was such that the open resource would stay put. I just tried now by leaving the resource active on mobile and killing the app via the multi task bar. When I opened the app the resource opened to chapter 20 (where I had left off in L4). It looks like this behavior has now changed to match more closely to what you desire.

First, I want to say thanks for the help. Obviously you put some work into finding a way to do this. Do you work for Logos or is this your hobby???
I will try to do what you say later this evening when I have some time. But I must say that it seems like a lot of work for just wanting to pick up my reading on various devices. I really think Logos needs to make this simpler. They are losing customers. I use it all day... I love it when it works--I guess I like the array of information you can get out of it. But I have tried to get friends interested but they all say the same thing: It is just to complicated and they go to other Bible software.
Thanks, I won't ask about this again. I just thought there would be a simple way of doing this.

No. Just a volunteer who, after finishing four years of seminary last year, hasn't found work <yet> [:S]
I must say that it seems like a lot of work for just wanting to pick up my reading on various devices.
It normally works pretty well for me, but most all of my reading is on the mobile app and I don't tend to leave my "reading material" open on my desktop. The detail in the instructions was just to make sure 1) you didn't have resources already open and 2) that a sync event occurred. Since I highlight EVERYTHING I read, I create sync events all the time.
I really think Logos needs to make this simpler.
I think it would be good to have a "Sync to last read?" popup.

Good luck in your job search. You are so good with Logos, maybe they will take you on full time!?
Thanks for your help.
