Upgrading
I just checked out my personalized upgrade page and I can honestly say, I'm not too happy. $400 to upgrade to Gold which I already own! I'd love to have the new features of L5 but not at that cost and to be honest the books I'd get don't justify the price for me personally. Is it possible to get just an engine upgrade with the new features?

I am an original languages guy and I don't see a crossgrade option. This company is committing suicide.
It's probably been said a dozen times already today, but I'll say it again: the crossgrade is coming, it's not available yet, and we don't know the price.

You're going to have to keep saying it, because this was the best kept secret and the worst launch of a new version release I have ever seen and I work in IT and have seen quite a few.
It's just wrong to make your reinvest for all the same resources over again in order to get the new functionality in the latest version. I know of no other software company that does this.
So the upgrade or crossgrade cannot come fast enough. That should be the upgrade and the cost, period.
It's just wrong to make your reinvest for all the same resources over again in order to get the new functionality in the latest version.
That's not what's happening. When you "upgrade" to the same package in the new version, the cost is for the new resources in that package. I have Version 4 Platinum. The restructured Platinum for version 5 adds a lot of resources I don't have. The cost covers the new datasets for V5 and all the new resources in the Platinum package (or whatever package I "upgrade" to).

Gary, unless I misunderstand you, you will not pay for a single resource again. If you look at your personal upgrade price it is for the new items that are contained in the same base package you presently own (be sure that is what you are looking at). For me that isn't too many new ones and those are discounted as well as they probably ever will be. I only pay to obtain those plus the new databases in L5.
The new databases will be available in a package deal called the crossgrade at some point. The L4 crossgrade was $69. No pricing has been mentioned for the new crossgrade.
You can continue to run L4 at no additional cost, or can upgrade to L5 without the new databases for free. You do not ever have to re-buy a resource.

it's been said by everyone but Logos. Is this an assumption based on the way we upgraded to v4? This has been handled nothing like that time.
It has been said by folks at Logos to us MVP's.
Here's a direct quote from Phil Gons from that communication to the forum MVP's:
Minimal Crossgrade and Free Engine
We do not plan to release the
minimal crossgrade or the free engine until the end of the launch
promotion. The only way to get the Logos 5 engine during the launch
period is to buy or upgrade to a base package.

David, with a thread moving along like this one, it is helpful if you quote the person you are responding to. Use the quote button in the gray area near the top of the message composition page, selecting just the text you want to quote before you hit 'Quote'.
If you are referring to the crossgrade path I referred to in my reply to you, that is based on actual word from Logos. Sorry there isn't anything on the web site to back that up, but we were promised during the beta test cycle that there will be this option once the smoke clears from the initial upgrade response.

I was very disappointed to see that I would have to spend $1,500 to upgrade my Platinum package to L5 Platinum. The disappointment comes from not actually wanting the additional books. I already have over 3,000 books in my Logos library. I only add the titles I really want. And I do so pretty often. But if I have to spend $1,500 to upgrade, I cannot purchase the books that I truly want to have.
My disappointment abates a bit on two points. One, the video about the upgrade tells me that it is not something I truly need anyway. I already do the things it does (the one I care about anyway: topic guide) in ways that L4 already does but does in other ways. Two, perhaps later, I can cheaply upgrade to the functionality without the unwanted volumes. I gather this is called "crossgrade." It would have to be pretty inexpensive though for the little it would offer me. $29 would buy a good book (or two) on pre-pub or community pricing. That is far more valuable to me than what an L5 upgrade or crossgrade appears to offer.
So, disappointed? Yes. But not as much as I first thought.

I agree. one more voice: I want to be able to upgrade the program at some reasonable price. Wordsearch upgrades in recent years have been less than $100

You can crossgrade for a minimal price (last time under $100) you just won't get new books. This will be available after the L5 product launch so the servers will be not be shut down. You don't have to upgrade, just wait, get the crossgrade (like they had available for L4) and then purchase the books you want.
Reading all the comments on this thread, I would have to conclude that the Logos marketing department did not do their homework on how to present this upgrade to the customer. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation. The common complaint is, "Just show us how to get the engine upgrade, period", then we can decide if we want to add resources. I think it's that simple. It's been said that there is a crossgrade coming...that needs to be defined for the layman. Again, marketing has failed in this regard.

BINGO!! This is a HUGE marketing blunder. I find it humorous that it's the forum MVPs who have to explain Logos' poor communication/manipulative marketing.
If I recall correctly Logo 4 was introduced the same way, with the new tools only available with upgrades. The only marketing mistake Logos made in my opinion was in using the same package names on most of the packages. How many would be complaining if they had been offered upgrades from Gold to Senator, Platinum to Majestic, etc?

I think you are right, the same names are a problem. The resources contained in the packages are different to L4, thus new names may have been better. But maybe Logos thought, "the users are professional exegetes, they are used to read the nuances of content and context instead of falling for such a fallacy."
And, btw, John is wrong, since leading Logos personnel including CEO Bob Pritchett himself are active in the forums and explain the same stuff all over again
Have joy in the Lord!

I agree, hindsight is always 20/20. I'm sure a naming shift would have created new questions, but it would have eliminated (in my opinion) much of the criticism about losing resources or repurchasing resources.

Where was this information? Surely it should be on my personalised offers page!
Logos is not currently offering a minimal crossgrade like they did with the launch of L4. However, you can "downgrade" your base packages and, for example pay for the new resources in Silver or Bronze which would be cheaper than the Gold upgrade price. Of course you will not lose any of your L4 Gold package.

ARE THEY KIDDING ME??? I have used this software and bragged about for years. I have spent a small fortune on my library and this is how I get treated, a downgrade!!! Man alive am I cross!
Did you read the part where you do not lose any of the resources you already have. Calm down Logos will offer a crossgrade but their servers can't take all that downloading at once.
Yes I did but why should I have to downgrade to get a cross grade. i don't want new books and I wish to keep my Gold status. I have spent a lot of money and praised this program to people endlessly. And where is that info? All I got was a upgrade page that didn't explain any of this! I should not have to pay for a downgrade.
I don't think he was telling you that you *had to*, just that if you wanted to use the new features now you could always downgrade, but if you want to be patient keep using Logos 4 until the cross-grade is made available.
It is going to be tough to get to sleep tonight. The Logos solution to every problem is the same--more books. A large portion of these forums has been committed to solving problems. We have gotten to 4.6SR1425 or something like that being used as bug-swatters for the company. One week ago I did not think I would be able to even use the Mac version throughout the weekend. Now in 7 days time I have the added frustration of paying for the same resources....the third time. I want to judiciously add reference resources when I need them, not when Logos wants to sell them. Many of us seem to angry and frustrated as well as getting poorer by the minute. How am I supposed to explain this to my wife or any other sane individual?
