Best Way to Sermonize?

I'm trying to dump my sermon notes (not the manuscript I preach from) but the notes I develop as I do my study into Logos. What has been some best practices in doing this sort of thing? Should I use the notes feature? What works best for you? Thanks.

Personal Books are the way to Go Jeremy. The sermon functionality was greatly advanced with 4.6a

What version of Logos are you using?

Personal Books
- Implemented syntax for Sermons and Illustrations. When this syntax is added, the compiler will automatically generate indices at the end of the book by date, topic, passage, and tags.
  - Fields are added via a table format, where the top-left cell contains ‘Sermon File Type’.
  - The metadata should be added after the title of the relevant sermon or illustration.
  - Except for the ‘Sermon File Type’ which is required for the first row, the other metadata lines can be added as desired in any order.
  - The field types are:
    - Sermon File Type: ‘Sermon’ or ‘Illustration’ (Note: the compiler will only recognize one type, the type in the first table, per book.)
    - Passages: Standard Bible reference formats. Accepts multiple values separated by a semicolon.
    - Topics: Accepts multiple values separated by a semicolon. (Topics for sermons should show up in the ‘Topics’ section of the Passage Guide. Topics for Illustrations should show up in the ‘Illustrations’ section of the Passage Guide.)
    - Tags: Accepts multiple values separated by a semicolon.
    - Date: Accepts multiple values separated by a semicolon. (The compiler will attempt to parse the date.)

Example:

Sermon File Type	Sermon
Passages	Gen 1:1; John 3:16
Topics	Creation; Love
Tags	Examples; Testing
Date	September 28, 2000

I'm trying to use Logos to record all my thoughts about a passage, etc. so that I don't have to have a word processing app open as well. What's the best of going about that I guess is my question. The notes feature seems to be for highlighting, etc.

I'd really just like to see what some helpful work flows are as I develop my understanding of the software.

The two tools you have in Logos for this are notes and clippings.

Notes are able to allow you to collect your notes around a passage while clippings allow you to store extracts of articles you may want to refer to later.

The Personal Book feature to which Thomas referred above is great for keeping a record of your final sermon manuscript in Logos as a searchable resource.

I do sometimes use notes to do initial research and then Microsoft Word to actually write the sermon.

The Notes feature can do that. I don't really use notes since I have a natural workflow that uses other programs for annotations.

I'd really just like to see what some helpful work flows are as I develop my understanding of the software.

Both Mark Barnes and Joe Miller have done some workflow videos that would be well worth your time.

That info helps...you can actually use notes for this. Notes are not just for highlighting, but can be used with highlighting. I would though, after you finish the research also archive it into a Personal Book.

I concur with the other comment about Mark Barnes and Joe Miller's videos.

Personally, I use a dual-monitor setup with logos on one monitor and MS Word on the other. Then when I am done in Word I save as a PDF and export to my iPad for the delivery step. With the new 4.6a functionality I will be archiving sermons as a PB in Logos.

I've actually just used notes in split screen while teaching in Logos. It links to the Scripture references when attached as notes. It will do the same from quotes from other resources. Have top screen for Bible and let it switch to other resources. Have notes in bottom screen and use link to launch resources. Then have notes as you need them. It works very well.

Jeremy, I also use a Clippings file when I do sermon or Bible Study prep, and it is helpful (when I remember to do it) to maintain a separate highlighting notes file for each study so all my highlights go to that one file.
