I don't get it...

I'm not understanding what Logos 5 is all about - I've not had lots of time to look into it, but currently I am on Scholars Platinum version of Logos 4 and not sure how Logos 5 is supposed to affect me?
I'm getting the upgrade emails, which I assumed are to update to Logos 5, but then see I am expected to pay over £1k for this upgrade
Could someone please explain what Logos 5 is and why I'm expected to pay over a grand to upgrade to it?
Grateful for any replies

I think Mark did it best with his video, showing 20 features that are new in L5 and how it looks in practice: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/59381.aspx

No you aren't. Logos set up new base packages, but instead of calling them, say, emerald, ruby, sapphire and diamond, they stuck with the precious metals naming, mostly because people can easily tell which are lower/higher on this scale. You pay for new content, consisting of new books ("dynamically" priced, i.e. you only pay for what you don't own) and new databases that drive some of the cool new features.
If you don't want the books, you may go for a Crossgrade (dynamically priced, costs $159 max and includes all the datasets and some book resources and interlinears). If you want just a bit of the new stuff, there's Core Datasets ($80 I think).
There will be a free, engine-only upgrade in Q1/2013 for those that just want the snappier execution and cooler look of L5 but say L4 gives them all they need.

The best way to learn what L5 is all about is to watch Mark Barnes' video introduction Finally! My new video introducing all of the new features in Logos 5 (click on the screenshot to open the video page).
You do not have to upgrade. L4 will still function as it does now. Logos even plans additional work on L4 for those who cannot upgrade to L5 (Windows XP and Mac OS 10.5 users).

That is not your only upgrade option. Take a look at the Upgrade page for more options.
Alternatively, you could go with the Minimal Crossgrade http://www.logos.com/product/28376/logos-5-minimal-crossgrade
NOTE: Considering the time differences in our individual posts (his is a half-hour prior to mine), don't know why Mick's did not show prior to me beginning this one. He has given you valuable information, but perhaps I amy have added a tidbit or so.

To summarise and clarify the points made above, there are three components to the upgrade you've been offered:
- A new programme update with several speed improvements and minor tweaks. This will be available as a free upgrade at some point soon (probably in the New Year).
- 10 new datasets, that add major functionality to Logos 5. You can buy these new datasets for $159.95 (called a minimum crossgrade), or you can buy seven out of the ten for $70 (called Core Datasets). With the minimum crossgrade, you get all the new features of Logos 5 referred to in the video linked above. If you buy either of these packages, you also get the programme update.
- New resources. With the release of Logos 5, Logos have also refreshed their base packages, which mean that different resources now come with Silver, Gold, etc. Several of the resources you had when you purchased L4 are not included in the L5 base packages, but others have taken their place. So if you 'upgraded' to Logos 5 Platinum, you would get many additional resources above and beyond what you purchased with L4, but you would not lose anything you already have. That's why the upgrade to Platinum looks expensive, because it includes dozens of new resources, in addition to the 10 new datasets and the free programme update.

Definitely a LOT of speed enhancements, and the new datasets are amazing. The cross-grade is what I purchased and I am not sorry at all!

Thanks very much for your replies, I'm alot more wiser now
It is a whopping price to pay to upgrade to the same level in L5 as I am in L4, so doubt I will be doing that anytime soon, so will probably go for the cross-over.
Thanks again

Nicky - Please don't consider the necessity to 'upgrade to the same level' as being a requirement for moving to L5.
Whatever you have you hold. If you are at Portfolio in L4 nothing you do will change that. When you move to L5 you simply add a new package (whichever package meets your needs) If you can do all you want with what you have you can simply purchase one of the 'cross grade packages'. In that case you will be at (say) L4 portfolio level upgraded to L5.If on the other hand you find resources that you would really like in one of the L5 packages then the deals on offer are really good - if you purchase on of those you would then be at e.g. L4 Portfolio + L5 Gold.
There is no need what ever to move at the same level and the only advantage in doing so is to get the new resources at a bargain price. But if the new resources are not of use to you they would not be a bargain.

Hi Nicky
Like you, I was on Platinum, and like the others in this thread I paid for the minimum crossgrade after working through the list of what resources I actually have and what from the new offers would be useful to me.
Hope you enjoy Mark Barnes' video, and are able to enjoy the new features.

Well what confused me was the email they keep sending out. The Logos 5 is here and calculate your discount - it was the first I heard about Logos 5 so assumed it was just an upgrade with a few new features... ie IOS5 to IOS6 kinda thing.
I then click on email to my custom upgrade discount page which tells me I am currently on Platinum and my upgrade is Diamond.. which would cost me £1011.94! I was pretty shocked as you can imagine. then looking at alot of the resources, I have them anyway and wasn't looking for any additional resources as I am happy with what I currently have. I don't think I could even read all the books I have now without adding even more...so no, I do not wish to upgrade to Diamond.
Now after the explanations I realise it is not a compulsory upgrade *phew, but may invest in upgrading to L5 interface with the new features.
Thanks again for the explanations, much appreciated.

Hi Nicky. You can "upgrade" to any of the L5 packages or simply to the minimal crossgrade or the core data sets. Like you, I have L4 Platinum and will probably upgrade to L5 Platinum. The upgrade page seems automatically to suggest the next higher package. In our situation, that is Diamond. However, if you click on L5 Platinum, you will find noticeably more resources (click on the "New to You" option) than you have in L4 Platinum. You may or may not want these, but you will find upgrading to L5 Platinum significantly less than upgrading to the even more resource-rich L5 Diamond.
Because the minimal crossgrade would cost me some $150, I figured I would go ahead and upgrade directly to L5 Platinum because that will be some $500, about $350 over the minimal crossgrade. So the additional resources, to me, are worth that $350 difference above the minimal crossgrade. They may or may not be worth that to you.
Hope this makes sense.

It looks like a upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, not like a upgrade from Window 7 to Windows 8.
