Highlights

How does everyone use highlights?  I would love to use it more but I don't like the fact that my highlights don't go across translations and that they create new note files for each type of highlights.  How does everyone else use these and does this not frustrate other users?

I use highlights very sparingly these days, as they get in the way of reading the text as it is. I used to use them more to mark sections of text in various ways. But I've since deleted most of those.

Recently I've only been using a light yellow highlight for short phrases or sentences that jump out at me as personally significant.

I do use visual filters to mark things out, such as imperatives, 2nd person pl. (double underline), and a few words that are generally translated the same in English but different in Greek (rhema & logos, e.g.), and a few other theologically significant terms (e.g. sarx, which the NIV84 translates a number of different ways).

That's the kind of things I wish I could get into but at this time I don't know enough about the original languages.  I'm still working on my Theology undergrad at Liberty University.

I really want to use highlights during devotions, but I don't always want to use the same translation.  I wish they could make this a possibility, I understand not all translations are equal but I usually highlight the entire verse.  It would be nice if this were possible to go across all translations based on reference not words.

Sounds like you want to use the Notes feature--it is the fastest way to simply highlight verses (if you select text), and is also a way to make a verse standout across translations and documents that reference that range (if you use the verse ref...but this won't highlight the full verse).

There wouldn't be an algorithmic way to apply partial highlighting (i.e., of a word or set of words) across all translations...other than what Visual Filters can do.

I use the dickens out of highlighting.  If you've been unable to find the dickens in your highlighting, it is because I've used that too.  Over time, this has caused me a big problem...my notes files are H U G E, and it takes an i7 processor to render them with acceptable speed.  The mobile apps can't handle my highlights, and only show a randomly selective few before they stop trying.   I'd love to break up the notes files (perhaps by reference book), but Logos hasn't provided a Notes Management Toolset to do that--other than the one-by-one method of selecting/moving highlights between notes files....and I've got WAY too many items to ever move them manually.

I love the highlighting feature, but fear it isn't scalable...at least at the intensity level with which I have traditionally used it.

Right.  I don't care to highlight individual words in verses but whole verses.  However, the little notes icon just doesn't stand out enough.  Any thoughts on how to highlight the whole verse?

    Hi David

Any thoughts on how to highlight the whole verse?

You can highlight the verse in a single translation using the standard highlighting tools

However, as you have referenced above, this doesn't span across different translations.

You will probably remember a discussion you were involved in recently on this subject at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/53462.aspx

I don't recall seeing anything from Logos to say they are going to change this.

Right, that is why I am wanting to know how others use highlights because without this function it seems pretty useless to me.  How do you use them Graham?  Or do you use them?

I'm not saying this is optimal, but if you "select" the verse text like this:

    image

And then Add a note to a note file, then you will see the highlighted verse like this:

    image

You can make the little boxes go away (or change the highlight color) by clicking on the box in the note item in the note file.  It isn't real quick, but it would work:

Unfortunately, in order to get the highlight to show up on the words of the verse, you can't use the verse reference...and therefore, these Notes won't then highlight the verse in other Bible versions...although the little box will show up (provided you didn't edit it to not show up).

    Sorry - missed your point[:$]

How do you use them Graham?  Or do you use them?

I do use them for a variety of reasons - but have never found the need for them to span multiple translations.

I use them when doing sermon prep and reading through a passage and reflecting on it. I will sometimes - but not always - use highlighting just to flag certain words or phrases that I want to explore or focus on. This is fairly transitory and I will often remove them when finished (although sometimes just leave them around to remind me of what I saw as significant)

I write notes against Bible passages - and virtually exclusively do this by selection - as I want them to be visible in whatever translation I subsequently use. The fact that this just uses an icon to flag the presence of a note is fine with me.

When I am reading books then I use both notes and highlights. Notes to comment on what I am reading and highlights to indicate things that particularly stand out - whether good or bad! Clearly, in this case the question about spanning multiple translations is less of an issue.

That's a summary of how I use them and find their functionality.

It works very well for me.

Ok Graham that makes sense to me.  So I should really think of them as highlights as if I were highlighting an actual paper book.  Those highlights obviously don't show up in my other versions of paper Bibles.  (I guess one thing I need to do is figure out what version I really want to steadily use, I switch too much!)

I also like your comments about individual books as well.  Thanks for the tips!

Here are two examples of how I use them.  While I have certain general stylistic conventions, in many cases I have to reuse highlighting symbology...and when I do that, a given usage may only persist for a single chapter.

    That's a good approach

I do wonder why they can't use the same algorithms as sympathetic highlighting?

I have used the inductive marking system, and I have a seperate palette for each book. There are a lot of places to get free .png files that can be used to create multiple custom styles.

I also have a basic mark-up for non-Bible resources, then create a copy and retitle for new books I start to read.

They probably could… but that would be a combination of both lemma & reference. It wouldn't do a good job of meeting the need of those who want an entire verse highlighted in EVERY translation, including ones without RI's. On the other hand, if the highlighting were simply based upon reference (without additional criteria), you would have some very undesirable side effects. Imagine a 4 page commentary section on John 3:16 which is solid highlighting. I'm not a programmer, and have no idea how complicated it would be… but it is certainly more complicated than first glance.

No it won't. You need Reference for that.

If they wanted the entire verse they could have reference highlighting, then you would not need an RI.  Granted, like you said, I am not a programmer so I don't know what all would be involved.
