Community Ratings Suggestion

Right now when I'm looking at a book I've rated in my Logos Library, I only see my personal rating on it in the Library. It would be nice to superimpose the Community Ratings (blue) on top of my personal rating to see what the community is rating the book along with my rating.

Most of the resources I have I want to look at when doing a deep search. [Except rating 1 items]

If I want to otherwise limit the search I use collections.

And if you are looking at community ratings are you the normal Logos customer, or are you a Jew, Catholic, SDA , Mormon, Baptist, [I got too tired of typing to finish the list]? [On some product sites all users are similar; they all watch TV so they can rate TVs fairly well. We are not TV watchers and we are not rating TVs . Example: A hates Z so A rates all Z as 1. B, a true follower of Z, sees that the latest book on Z has a 1 rating and does not buy it not realizing that the only person rating it was A who hates Z. IMHO community ratings in this community are junk - no ten of us think alike.

You can get that when you hover over the rating in Information (both Library and Resource Info).

Yeah I feel the same way as Dave. The community ratings in my opinion are not very desirable especially since some folks use them as a "tagging" system (as David Ames gave in example above) and not a true rating system.

With the tag system being so difficult to manage I guess some folks use the ratings system and that is not something I want to see in my library.

You can get that when you hover over the rating in Information (both Library and Resource Info).

I didn't think about the hovering feature. That helps.

Strange some people use it that way. Not sure if it's because I attended Morris Proctor's seminar on L4 before I really started tagging my library and learned how to best use these features (Morris was great!), but how I've always used ratings was I've either read through the entire book first, then rated it, or I rate the reference books I use on a regular basis and give my personal opinion on how useful they are. I don't simply rate books to tag them.

I don't think it was goofing them up - although I've never used the ratings. I have no interest in the Community ratings either ... so it's nice to know that they are not meaningful rather than my just being obstinate[;)]

Logos have to realise that they just can't force 'community' upon us because it seems a good idea. Beside the ratings fiasco (the way it affects the user Rating column) also look at the "Popular Highlights" fiasco. I guess we have to put up with the "Popular tags" in Information but I think we deserve options when the design choice is so intrusive.

IMHO community ratings in this community are junk - no ten of us think alike.

Assuming that various users use the rating system in various ways, as you've pointed out, then statistically over time, the community ratings will all approach a limit just below the median choice, or somewhere between 2.5 and 3 stars. It is a statistical anomaly, but it is inevitable unless there is some systematic bias in how everyone 'misuses' the rating tool.

This by itself is reason to ignore the community rating tool.

Personally, I see Community Ratings, Community Tags, and Popular Highlights as crutches for those who wish to allow others to do their thinking for them.
