Logos 3 & Windows 8

Hello forum,

I am considering purchasing a new computer and installing Win8 on it.

If I do this I would move Logos 3 to the new computer.

My question is this, has anyone be using Logos 3 on a pc with Win8 as its operating system? If so, have you experienced any difficulties in compatability?

Also, if you know of any previous posts on this subject please direct me to them.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. To date I have not used the workspace much so not having it in Win8 would not be a noticeable inconvenience.

You just might want to upgrade to L5 once the free engine comes out.

Tom, I am not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you saying that the engine that runs Logos 5 is going to be a free offer to Logos 3 users?

I have no intention of buying Logos 5.

There will be some very affordable upgrade options available soon.  You may not get all the bells and whistles, but you will have the new engine if you upgrade.  There are many threads (like this one) that are discussing the details of the upgrade.  You may pay a little more jumping from 3 to 5, but it is well worth the small investment.

Yes, you will be able to run L5 without buying anything.  As a matter of fact, you can download L4's engine right now for free.  I believe that you will have to wait two to three weeks before downloading the free L5 engine. Because you are just downloading the program and not any of the resources, you will not have access to things like Biblical things.

Like Logos 4, the software engine for Logos 5 will be freely available soon, possibly later this month.  Also like Logos 4, to use new features needs new resources with appropriate data.  For example, Logos changed reverse interlinear formatting between Libronix 3 and Logos 4.  Logos has migrated many Greek resources to Logos Greek Morphology tagging, which enables Morph Search in more resources in Logos 4 and Logos 5.

Thankful for option to use Logos 5 and Libronix 3 at the same time (running both 32 bit applications on 64 bit Windows 7):

My favorite feature in Logos 5 and Logos 4 is visual filter highlighting so can "see" morphological codes in Greek and English using resources in parallel:

    image

Highlighting verbs and things enables quick referencing between Greek and English while showing context in each language.
English is not Greek, both are not Hebrew nor Aramaic. Proper names tend to have a one to one correspondence between languages, but others words cover a range of expression with a variety of nuances.

Visual highlighting shows 7 verbs in Matthew 6:9-13 in the imperative mood.  Reverse interlinear has the M in the morphological tagging for iMperative:

Logos Wiki has visual filter examples => http://wiki.logos.com/Extended_Tips_for_Highlighting_and_Visual_Filters#Examples_of_visual_filters

Logos forum thread => http://community.logos.com/forums/t/47696.aspx about Greek Tools includes a couple screen shots from Logos resources, which have Greek verbal mood summaries.

Note: on Windows, mouse hover items appear in a pop-up.  Thankful can freely use Logos 4 and Logos 5 on my electronic devices running either OS X or Windows.  Libronix 3 only runs on Windows; the initial Libronix 3 port to Mac OS X essentially became an eBook reader after Safari 5 upgrade.

    This is the cross-grade option.

Logos changed the upgrade rules for Logos 5 packages. The dynamic pricing engine calculates credit for all resource licenses in all package upgrades, including Verbum and minimal crossgrade. Thankful for option to choose different Logos package(s). Noticed Logos 5 Starter package includes 4 of the 16 new Logos 5 data sets plus a number of media resources and Bible Reference resources along with reverse interlinear resources.  Logos 5 Starter has many of the Logos 4 minimal crossgrade resources.

The Logos 5 Silver package includes 15 of the 16 new data sets plus more resources. The Gold package has resources for all the new Logos 5 features.

To encourage sales of larger packages, Logos has additional % discount during launch promotion: e.g. up to 30 % off for upgrade to Logos 5 Portfolio package, whose content bundling has changed. The upgrade page shows an icon "New to you" if an upgrade has one or more new resources: e.g. NAC Commentary of 40 volumes has "New" icon when only 1 would be added; personally wish for a count of new resources to appear with "New to you" icon.

Am aware of a Logos 4 Platinum user who is planning a Logos 5 Silver "upgrade" for $ 256.54 since the higher packages do not have enough new useful resources for that user; less expensive to purchase a few resources individually that could include minimal crossgrade for Bible Sense Lexicon. The Silver package includes Theological Lexicons of the Old and New Testaments along with the complete works of Francis A Schaeffer, whose regular prices are more than the dynamic upgrade amount.

Personally upgraded from Logos 4 Platinum to Logos 5 Portfolio; my delta upgrade cost from Diamond to Portfolio was less than 10 % of the combined regular price for a number of items in my wish list. Looking forward to using many "new" resources with Logos 5.

Thank you for all the work that you put into your reply -the graphs and charts as well as the information.

I will not be upgrading from Logos 3. I have reached the saturation point for both printed as well as electronic resources. What I must now do is to make good use of what I already have.

BTW, I have pretty much decided NOT to upgrade my operating system to Win8 Pro. I spent many hours yesterday and today researching online computer magazines and Windows forums and my conclusion is that it be would better for me to continue with Win7. The only real incentive for me even considering an upgrade to Win8 was the low price of downloading it from Microsoft's website.

Wise decision. It's not compatible with Libronix (L3). Stay with Windows 7 for as long as you can.

    Dave,

Thanks for the tip. I did not know that Win8 is not compatible with Libronix 3 but it does not surprise me. One ofthe main problems with updating an OS is that you could find yourself unable to use valuable software.

I have both Win7 Ultimate and Vista Ultimate. Libronix 3 is compatible with both so I will stick with them.

And stick with IE9 which is the engine for Libronix!  IE10 is not compatible with Libronix.

Now that’s disappointing news. I was looking forward to downloading and installing IE10.

I don’t understand your saying that IE9 is the engine for Libronix.

I thought each ‘version’ of Logos had its own engine.

I don’t understand your saying that IE9 is the engine for Libronix.

That was a little sloppy. Internet Explorer (IE) is the engine for Libronix. The last version of Libronix (3.0g) is compatible with IE8 but IE9 required a simple registry fix (the IE9 Fix).  Libronix is no longer supported so it will remain incompatible with IE10.

    Hi everyone.

I have just updated to Win8 and successfully reinstalled Libronix 3. When asked to create an account in account manager, I selected "Existing User" and then "Enter Codes".... after putting in my user ID and confirmation code (I know I have the correct ones, but even tried slightly different variations), absolutely NOTHING happens when "NEXT" is clicked.

Am I right in assuming this is because of Libronix needing part of the older IE engine for this process to be completed? Or is there something I'm missing?

    Thanks!

Chris, If you would not mind being a Guinea Pig, could you add the following registry key and see what happens?

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION]
    "LDLS.exe"=dword:00001f40

If it then works, let us know [:D]

    Hey again!

Neither the IE9 fix, or the quoted regedit fixed the issue =(... I tried the IE9 fix, restarted and nothing changed. Then tried the above regedit, restarted and nothing changed,

    Are there any other options?

If not, what are my options for updating from Libronix 3?

If not, what are my options for updating from Libronix 3?

    1. If you never owned a Logos 4 Base Package then you must get a Crossgrade to Logos 4 ($114.95) -->https://www.logos.com/product/28576/logos-4-minimal-crossgrade

This gives you enough resources and features to enjoy Logos 4 together with your existing resources  (some older Logos 2 resources might not be compatible with L4) Also note that PBB books are not compatible with L4, but you can build your own Personal Books in L4.

You will see an Upgrade button but you can only purchase Base Packages for Logos 5, now. So if you want to take that step at minimal cost then get the Logos 5 Minimal Crossgrade  --> https://www.logos.com/product/28376/logos-5-minimal-crossgrade

This will give you all the new features of Logos 5 and is much cheaper than upgrading to the Gold package which also has all the features. If you already have any of the resources then the cost will be lower than $159.95.

It's important to note that you must get the L4 Crossgrade in order to get the L5 Crossgrade or any other Logos 5 Package.

    2. If you already own a Logos 4 Base Package then you can consider an Upgrade to Logos 5  --> https://www.logos.com/upgrade

Again, if want all the features at minimal cost then consider the Logos 5 Minimal Crossgrade which is the first option on the Upgrade page.

Carefully study the resources and features you will be getting in each package (incl. Crossgrade) and ask back here if there are any concerns.

Looking for the free engine mentioned here. I bought a Study Bible at a local christian bookstore and there was a bonus CD that had the LIbronix CD with version 3.0 I ran the update but I see it is still version 3.0 I am running windows 8 operating system also. IS the logos 5 free engine available ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lynna

Hi Lynna - and welcome to the forums

IS the logos 5 free engine available ?

    Not at the moment.

The two ways to get Logos 5 at the moment are either through the purchase of base packages or one of the "crossgrade" options from L4. Both of these are chargeable.

The free engine should be available in the first quarter of 2013

am considering purchasing a new computer and installing Win8 on it.

Microsoft has removed the Start button from Windows 8; the user interface and interaction is a bit different.

On a touch screen, can swipe in from the sides for some options.

Several editions of Windows 7 included XP Mode.  For Windows 8, Microsoft replaced Virtual PC with Hyper-V, which can be used to create a Windows XP virtual machine => http://4sysops.com/archives/windows-8-xp-mode-part-1-hyper-v/ that would have an older version of Internet Explorer, which is used by Libronix 3 for display rendering.

    Microsoft has a Windows 8 comparison page => http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/compare

Windows 8 RT cannot run Logos applications (e.g. Libronix 3, Logos 4/5).  See forum for Windows 8 apps from Logos => Windows Store Apps

    Keep Smiling for Jesus:

Thanks for the links and the information. One of my main considerations for retaining Win7 is its XP Mode. I have an Epson photo scanner that is in perfect condition that will not run under Vista or Win7.

    may be happen some problem.

    win8 can't enhanced to L3.

    you can't use some function.

for example, workspace file didn't save.
