Logos 5 first impressions

I write this coming to Logos 5 (Bronze plus Crossgrade) from Logos 4 LE.

First things first, I still think Logos needs to be clearer in their pricing structure. To me at least, instead of having versions with escalating functionality the Minimal Crossgrade should have been folded into and priced into all upgrades.

That said, on to Logos 5.

I found the installation easy (I am running Windows 8). It also was rather faster than the Logos 4 install. All resources downloaded properly (including my extra books and the Minimal Crossgrade components).

My next surprise was in opening the program - someone made Logos eat its Wheaties! The new UI is very similar to the old but everything is visibly faster. Books open quickly now instead of like sludge in 4. As to new functionality, so far I have not needed to use it all yet but the Search is way better - it is no longer as crazily literal as it was in L4. Prior to 5 I was reduced to using Bing and Google to do searches then access Logos based on the results. So far in 5 I can FINALLY work completely with Logos.

So a good start to date.

You are right, the program is definitely faster. I would tend to agree with you that possibly building the MC into all of the packages would be beneficial. However, if they decided to do that I think the MC should still be a package of its own for those who do not wish to have additional resources from another base package.

I agree with your assessment. L5 is L4 finished. I have always thought of it in terms of Windows Vista to Windows 7. In L5, I concur to what you wrote, "I can FINALLY work completely with Logos".

I also agree with David that an MC package should always be available to those who do not wish to have additional resources from another base pack

I also think they Minimum Crossgrade should be available separately. What I was saying was that the Crossgrade should be included in all the versions as well. Thus the whole business of needing to buy a version and the crossgrade is no more.

But to include the crossgrade in lower base packages would force people to pay for things which they might not want - or might make the base packages more expensive.

Or do you mean that there should be an option when buying a base package to add in the minimal crossgrade as well?

Definitely faster. It even works on my cheapo 1Gig memory travelling notebook! (I was going to uninstall Logos from that and just use iPad for Bible study when travelling if it didn't work). Main problem with 1 Gig memory is that I can';t use other programmes when Logos is open, but 5 is still less slow than 4.

I'm having just the opposite experience. I took the plunge & upgraded (min crossgrade + starter, added to L4 platinum+). It's about the same on startup & loading a layout, but clicking on any key (especially layouts, which I use a LOT) is now definitely slower. There's a noticeable pause (time enough to sit back in the chair when nothing happens) on EVERY menu selection. [:'(] Never had that problem in L4... (My config is below in my signoff.)

Still exploring, & but so far it seems nice other than that excruciating pause after clicking...

Temp files are now deleted (only ~300 Mb worth) & a defrag is now in progress to see if that helps.

Well, it turns out I didn't (& still don't) have a complete L5 installation... My 1st clue? After completion of disk maintenance, I started L5 again, & it immediately started downloading what it 1st said was 1.2Gb, then seconds later would be 2.2Gb of data... That explains the missing timeline & other new features. Problem was, it'd download for awhile, then quit. I'd restart L5 & it'd start downloading for awhile, then quit. (This went on 4 times over a several hour span, during which I set the laptop in a docking station with hard wire access to the wireless router for fastter download speeds.) Finally, at about 11pm, the download appeared to be complete & indexing started. I left that to run over night.

No such luck. When I checked this morning, the new L5 icon immediately left the system tray. Great, I thought! It's done! Not true. I also got caught by Windows Update for security updates for .net 4.5, & after rebooting & restarting L5, it started indexing again--at 0% complete.

So my overall impression of L5 so far is that it isn't very stable. Not a great start, though I will say I like the look & feel.

While it's indexing, it's impossible to say what the response is going to look like. For example, when I click on "Layout" (while indexing), it's a 5-second response time.

Maybe all will be better when it finishes. I sure hope so...

The Layout menu is one of the very few places in L5 that still feels sluggish.

I was going to suggest launching the layout from the command bar (using the "Load" command), but after trying that now, I find that it does not work as expected. My first try loaded the correct layout, but not maximized (I always run Logos maximized). My second attempt, which loaded a layout with a two word name, loaded an old version of the layout (not the most recently saved version), and it loaded on my second screen (which I haven't done for a very long time).

Not sure if this is a bug, or if this is the way this command has always worked (never tried it before today).

After 3hr, indexing is 48% complete. Maybe there's an end, TODAY.....

It made it to 70% before I had to put the laptop to sleep in order to transport it home (it's my only PC whether at work or home).

Waaaahhhhh..... When I woke up the latop, it quit... no error messages, just quit. So I got out of L5 & restarted... Indexing started again. Back to 0%. [:'(]
