Every 3:16 in the Bible

Is there any way to search for every occurrence of a chapter and verse in the entire Bible?  In this case, I am looking for 3:16.   I would like to do others in the future but it would be nice if I could just run a search for it.

Hi Rick!         *smile*          Peace and Every Blessing!

I can't imagine why you would want to search for every occurrence of chapter and verse - referencing 3:16 - in the entire Bible!

However, I just searched for "3:16" in Google to see what I would get.  I'm sort of finished with my productive labours for this day; so I was curious.  It was "interesting" to say the least!

You could search for Genesis 3:16 - and also Exodus 3:16 ...          and so on ....              including various kinds of searchings ........  Please let us know if you find an easy way to do it with Logos.           It's beyond me!                                            *smile*

Philippians 4:  4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand..........

There's a book called 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated by Donald E. Knuth, the well-known computer scientist who is also a Christian and a calligrapher. I'm guessing that Dr. Knuth looked up each of the 3:16 verses manually.

Comment from an Amazon.com reviewer named B. Marold: "For each verse, there are three pages of text plus one full page of art giving the calligrapher's interpretation of the text. ”

Am curious to know why, apart from some project like this, the same chapter/verse in each book is of interest to you. There's nothing special or inspired about those verse divisions, and they were applied long after the original text was written. So it would just be a random set of verses that happened to be at a given location in each book of the Bible.

I saw that book but I think he is using the NRSV.  I wanted to do something with this in church and if it is not in the KJV, I dare not bring it through the doors.  I was hoping that with the thousands I have invested in two Bible software programs that one of them could do this for me.  I'll just have to manually type in all of the first three letters of all the book names and do a paste for the 3:16 part and separate the lot with commas.  I was hoping for a wildcard solution somehow... some programmers back door trick to fool the software and allow me to use a wildcard for a book name.  It doesn't sound like their is one.  I'll keep watching just in case somebody comes up with that eloquent syntax that will get the job done.

    HI Rick,

It can be done with a little thinking outside the box.  What I did was search for a list of books in the bible on google.

Found one and dropped it into excel.  Using Text to Columns feature I tided up the text removing extra information like a number next to each book of the bible.  I then used a formula to append 3:16 to each bible book name so in excel my first row of cells looked something like:

                A                               B   (forumula)          B(displayed result)

    1        Genesis            =A1&" 3:16"                    Genesis 3:16

I then copied column C to a text file.  I did not worry about cleaning up the list for combinations that did not work - I let Logos do that for me.

I pasted the list form the text file into a passage list and in Logos and now have a passage list called "The 3:16 verses".

I've exported to a text file the clean list of 3:16 verses from passage list and attached below to save you doing the preparation work.  This should get you what you want and in passage list you can easily change the version being used.

Use a passage list. I googled a list of books of the bible. After a few clicks I found a nicely formatted list. I then used a regex in my editor to replace the line end with " 3:16,". That gave me this:

    Gen 3:16, Exod 3:16, Lev 3:16, Num 3:16, Deut 3:16, Josh 3:16, Judg 3:16, Ruth 3:16, 1 Sam 3:16, 2 Sam 3:16, 1 Kings 3:16, 2 Kings 3:16, 1 Chron 3:16, 2 Chron 3:16, Ezra 3:16, Neh 3:16, Esth 3:16, Job 3:16, Ps 3:16, Prov 3:16, Eccles 3:16, Song 3:16, Isa 3:16, Jer 3:16, Lam 3:16, Ezek 3:16, Dan 3:16, Hos 3:16, Joel 3:16, Amos 3:16, Obad 3:16, Jon 3:16, Mic 3:16, Nah 3:16, Hab 3:16, Zeph 3:16, Hag 3:16, Zech 3:16, Mal 3:16, Matt 3:16, Mark 3:16, Luke 3:16, John 3:16, Acts 3:16, Rom 3:16, 1 Cor 3:16, 2 Cor 3:16, Gal 3:16, Eph 3:16, Phil 3:16, Col 3:16, 1 Thess 3:16, 2 Thess 3:16, 1 Tim 3:16, 2 Tim 3:16, Tit 3:16, Philem 3:16, Heb 3:16, Jas 3:16, 1 Pet 3:16, 2 Pet 3:16, 1 John 3:16, 2 John 3:16, 3 John 3:16, Jude 3:16, Rev 3:16

You can copy the text, create a passage list, and click Add ...from clipboard. Then select whichever bible version you like.

EDIT: Oops, Andrew beat me by a minute.

Awesome!  Thanks!  I don't have Excel but I do have Libre Office.  I never use spreadsheets for anything so I am not up on the latest commands but even a dummy like me can use this list.  Thank you.  Randy... a few swift clicks and regex... what's a regex?  I know what a text editor is but not sure what a regex is.  I can do a few command line things in linux and os X but that one is a new term.  How did you get it to add 3:16 at the end of each one?

Nice approach Randy.  [H]  I was thinking someone else might have responded while I was compiling my answer.

Don't forget Hezekiah 3:16.  It won't show up in any search, but is handy to cite for any assertion you wish to make with "scriptural" authority.  [:D]
