Logos 5 highlighting slowing me down.

I am using a Mac. I have used a highlighter when reading a commentary for many years. Just updated to logos 5 and when I highlight something I get the dreaded spinning wheel where I have to wait to do anything. I look over at the window that shows all my highlighting options and I see on the bottom that it is making an annotation. How do I stop this?

If by "this" you meaning "making an annotation", you cannot stop it. The way that the sync works in Logos is by treating highlights as a type of annotation. What we need to determine is why the highlighting is slowed so noticeably by the creation of the annotation. My first guess would be to look at the size of the not file into which the highlighting is going - large note files often create poor performance.

To add a little to MJ's comments: This behavior is not new in L5. If you are surprised by it, I wonder if you were keeping up with updates in L4. I know that there was a bug on Mac that prevented updates for some users, who were stuck on a build more than a year old. If this is the case for you, all of your highlights are in pallet specific note files. If you highlight a lot, those files are no doubt very large. If you need help understanding this more, and need a strategy to organize, let us know. [:)]

First, thanks for responding so quickly. Second, it very well could be that I thought I was upgrading and my Mac was not. Third, how do i manage this better so it does not keep happening? Can I erase the contents of a file and still have the book or commentary highlighted?

I am having the same issue. It was very bad after the last few updates on L4 Mac. I upgraded to L5 Mac and it was much better, but after the last update it is bad again. It is a little better on the IPad version, but still sluggish.

What can be done to speed this up until a program fix is in place?

FYI - If you are not downloading a 100+MB (non resource) update once or twice a month, your system isn't updating.

As I understand your question… no. Perhaps the best thing for you to do is to find an unmarked resource, create a new pallet, make a few trial highlights and look inside the newly created (pallet specific) note file. The highlight that you SEE is a visual representation of the underlying NOTE. If you delete the note, you also delete the highlight.

It sounds like you came into L5 with a ton of highlights. At some point (either in a later 4.x build, or now in L5), Logos created a pallet specific note file for each pallet you have used. All of your highlights will be in those files.

I can't speak about your current situation. I am not fully sure what your issue is. Did you rescue the note file? If so, can you ACT like you are going to print, and see what happens. DON'T actually print… no need to waste the paper! I just want to know how many pages it would be.

Are you using one of the mobile apps? If so, which version on which device, and does the highlighting appear?

Personally, I helped to beta test the app before highlighting debuted. I discovered that large note files caused crashes and sync issues. I spent more than 12 hours migrating my note files into RESOURCE specific note files. (For anyone with really large amounts of notes, migrating old notes into new folders would be impractical.) This is now my preferred method, but there are drawbacks to my system as well (primarily in that it is more complicated).

One general thing that can always be tried when Logos gets slow is clearing History (Tools > History > Clear). It seems to sometimes improve things, at least on Mac.
