Cheapest way to get someone up and running with Logos?

I'm trying to perhaps get a relative set up with Logos--he's never used it before. He'd be using primarily on a PC laptop, iPhone, and possibly iPad.

I think what he's most interested in is resources/commentaries, purchased as stand-alone deals. Original language resources are not a huge need, but something like the WBC commentary series, for example, would be helpful. He also doesn't need a bunch of English versions.

So given that his needs are perhaps just a couple good English versions (NRSV and NIV, say) and commentaries--what's the easiest and cheapest way to get him set up in Logos?

Logos 5 is not yet available as a stand-alone engine, right? I've seen crossgrades for data sets, but what about purchasing data sets and basic functionality in 5 if you don't have 4, from which to upgrade?

And isn't Logos 4 available somewhere for free, just as an engine?

I think a base package is important primarily for some base resources, base functionality and the reverse interlinears. I realize this is not the cheapest, but why invest in Logos if you are not going to have access to the most valuable tools it offers. There used to be some nelson packages that would get one started pretty inexpensively, which may still be able to be purchased in the Libronix format and then transferred over to L5 when the free update becomes available. An internet search would probably bring these up, but would require a certain amount of technical skill to get them up and running. The price of cheap I guess... If your friend just wants to get studying then a smaller base package L5 with purchase of additional commentaries and resources would be my recommendation.

Logos has less expensive entry prices, but I would not call Logos cheap... but then neither is a BMW.

The cheapest base package I've seen is some $300. Or am I missing something and is there something cheaper? I know the crossgrade prices are cheaper, but that would only apply to someone who already has Logos 4.

Yes, if you were to buy a stand-alone product right now as a new customer you would use L4 until L5 was released for free in Q1 2013.

I recommend a base package if he wants reverse interlinear tagging and all the cools stuff that comes along with it. If he only wants to use Logos as an ebook reader/searcher than buying ad hoc would work but a lot of the cool stuff that Logos can do comes from the resources/data only available in a base package.

You can find a Nelson Essential package for Libronix for under $30, install Libronix, sync library, install L4 min cross grade or free upgrade and convert the resources to L4 and then upgrade to L5 when the free package becomes available. You would miss out many of the best features of L5, but have a functional library with a little work going from Libronix to L5. Here are the resources in the Essential Package:

A “free” introduction is biblia.com. By creating an account with Biblia account (the same account works with Logos, Vyrso etc.) a new user has access to 50 resources for free. Once a user is established with an account (with method of future payment), he can sign up for and start using the Faithlife study resources as they are currently “FREE” (but there will most likely be a subscription fee sometime in the future. The English Bible that comes with FSB is Lexham English Bible and is part of the FSB annual subscription.) Some of the Resources that you have free access to on the internet with Biblia will require a purchase if you want to use them offline with the Logos search engine, ESV for example. The Logos 4 engine (it can be downloaded from the links below), is the latest available (Logos 5 for free is reportedly scheduled for release in the Spring 2013) If you want the NRSV, NIV, ESV or some of the other popular translations they are currently only $10 each.

This is the least expensive (free depending on if you like the Lexham English translation) way to get someone started as a user, until they recognize the worth of their investment. [:)]

One thing no one has talked about is the FREE Logos App for his iphone or ipad. This would give him access to 69 or so resources for no cost and he would get to try before you buy. This may be something to look into for him. http://www.logos.com/ipad

For clarification… the "free" resources are available ONLY on the mobile device, without actually owning the licenses. In other words, you won't have access to them in L5. If you sign up for Faithlife, however, there are a number of resources which are added to your account. Since you would own those licenses, they will appear in L5.
