Kindle Fire Usability

I'm considering getting the Kindle Fire 8GB, but I'm wondering how it handles a couple apps. The first is the Logos app. I'm comfortable with the iOS app right now (split screen and notes ability), is the kindle app in any way inferior to it? Does it run petty smooth?

The other app that I wanted to run is the Google Books app. Does anyone have experience with this? There are a couple free books in particular that I want to be able to read on the kindle fire because the text is too small to read on the iPhone. Just curious if anyone has experience with one or both of these apps and what they think.

The Kindle Fire handles the Logos app ok. It is not as polished as the IOS app. I don't do the split screen on it, mainly because of the screen size. I use the Kindle Fire mainly for reading plans and pleasure reading since it is easier to hold one handed.

Thanks for the heads up kenneth. On the Logos app, is it just that it doesn't look as pretty but still has all the same features, or is it also a bit slower to use than ios?

Also, does anyone have any experience with the google books app? If it's even available? The biggest reason I'm considering a tablet is so that I can easily read some out of print/hard to find books on it, that I can't find anywhere else without paying hundreds (more than a tablet). Many out of print books are free in google books, they're just tougher to navigate through (no table of contents) and the one I want in particular has some very small notes that are pretty small for book size pages. The notes are microscopic on my iphone, but on a tablet they should be ok. This is the main reason I want to purchase the kindle fire.

There is free software online that does a decent job of converting Google books into Kindle format. I'm on Kindle Fire.

There are some things which the iOS app does which the Android app can't do yet.

An example would be the ability to view synchronised documents (such as notesfiles) directly within the app.

Feature parity is being worked on but the Android app is still behind in terms of functionality.

There is free software online that does a decent job of converting Google books into Kindle format. I'm on Kindle Fire.

The only issue that I think I'll run into here is that it's a huge very old image pdf file, so it doesnt conform to kindle very well (it's not single collumn so two or three paragraphs mold together when I try to convert it to anything; I also own the document in pdf form though, and might be able to just view an imaged pdf on the kindle). So if I could convert it to pdf and if the fire or paperwhite take pdf image files, then it could work, but I'm not positive they do. hoping someone has had a similar experience.

You can upload PDF's to the Kindle very easily. However, I have done this primarily off the Stanford Encyclopedia site which permits a 1 column format. I haven't tried old PDF images. However, you could test it by downloading the free Kindle Reader onto your laptop or PC and adjusting window size to mimic a Kindle.

Don't forget about using the Send to Kindle app from Amazon... it has versions for Windows and Mac and works with a variety of browsers or mobile devices. Most of the files you send are converted into Kindle format, though a pdf is sent as a pdf document... I have uploaded old pdf's to my Fire (original) and it opens them well, you can rotate the screen and use pinch to zoom in and out to get a good size to read and just scroll right through. The nice thing about the app is that it will send it any of your registered kindle devices, including a pc, kindle, kindle fire or kindle app on an ipad or iphone. Just right click on the file (windows) and the file menu has an option to send to kindle, and you select which one... I always send via wi-fi, so there is no cost and it can archive it in your kindle library.

Thanks MJ. I just tried loading the pdf file manually with a usb to my wife's kindle, but all the pages of the doc just show up blank on the kindle. I want to check and see if the kindle app on my computer and iphone will display it properly, but I can't get the pdf document to sync from my wife's kindle to them wirelessly. It looks like if I load a document manually it just stays on the hardware it was loaded on and doesnt sync. The document is too large to send to all my kindle apps via the personal doc. email. My current email server blocks it (it's 46MB). So I think I'm out of luck for adding this particular pdf to the kindle. Unless anybody knows an email server that's free that I can send this large of a file through - or is a kindle genious!

I've used the Kindle Fire and Logos for a year now and it works for reading, highlighting and note taking which is what mainly use it for. The Word Study and Passage Guide feature only works if you are connected to wifi. They are okay - but nothing close to using my desktop.

Thanks for the help out all! I was able to load the pdf on my kindle app for my iphone and it works great for that! Looks like I'll be going with the fire most likely since everyone has said it runs great.
