While performing a routine system cleaning I came across a large (550mb) folder (C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Installer) that had 44 sub-folders each containing the single file, Logos4.exe.icon. My guess is that the Logos4 update process installs a new instance of this file without removing any of the previous versions. I'd like to clean this up if possible. Has anyone had any experience deleting the older folders (they date back a few years)?
772MB here so I'll be interested in hearing the answer as well. Every other folder in that directory is empty or is very small in size so perhaps Logos is/was not deleting temporary files properly.
Sounds like a bug in the installer. 866MB for me. Thanks for the heads up.
I don't know why those files are present (or what the .icon extension even means) but I can reproduce the problem. I've filed a bug report for our Setup expert to look into.

Good find!
1.38 GB and 550 MB for each of my installations on one computer.
The most recent one with logos.exe.icon OR logos4.exe.icon is required by the Windows installer and must not be deleted. Some belong to other applications and also must not be deleted.

Whoops! I didn't look inside any of the folders. I just assumed they were all these left-behind Logos icons and deleted everything older than Dec 2012 in my AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Installer folder. I hope I didn't break anything. Fortunately I was able to undelete them all and then go through and find the few folders that had something other than Logos icons and keep those but delete just the Logos ones. Shouldn't the others have been deleted too? It seems to me that any installer leaving junk around like that when it installs is misbehaving.

Not if they belong to a current app! Trace them in the Registry to see if you can find the application e.g. a search for {E728441A-7820-4B1C-87C9-DE7BE37B2953} showed it belongs to "Download Navigator" which came with my Epson printer. If you can't find a registry entry with a product description then it is likely to be junk.
But how many apps do you install 117 times in 2.5 years (my 1.38 GB "Beta" folder)!?
Not if they belong to a current app!
Yeah, but I have tons of current apps, and only about 5 or 6 folders left in my Installer folder that have icons in them. Don't most programs put their icons somewhere else in the OS and not leave them in the Installer folder? For example, one of the programs I found that left an icon folder behind in Installer was Across Lite 2.0 (a crossword puzzle app) which I installed in September 2012. I found it in the registry by searching for the folder name -- {975EA987-5D79-4A1C-AD71-D27B28347B48}. However when I open the properties for the Across Lite icon on my Start menu, and click "Change Icon" on the Shortcut tab, the place it is finding the icon is C:\Users\Rosie Perera\AppData\Roaming\Across Lite 2.0, not in the Microsoft\Installer folder. So I'm guessing it would be safe to delete that {975EA987-5D79-4A1C-AD71-D27B28347B48} folder. The other files in that folder are Icon975EA987.exe and Icon975EA9871.exe, both of which have setup program icons, and I'm guessing are also not needed anymore.

Maybe, but does a few extra KB matter (even the Logos icon is down from 13 MB to 95 KB).
Is this also an L5 issue?
After upgrading to L5, I have 222MB in 19 files in 19 Folders in the C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Installer
Most of the files are Logos4.exe.icon, one is Logos.exe.icon, and one is ARPPRODUCTICON.exe
A quick bit research on this issue suggests caution in deleting any of the files/folders from the Installer folder as they may be necessary for uninstalls, updates, etc.. Most of what I've read says to leave it alone and only delete files/folders if disk space is becoming an issue (usually not the case for most of us). Here's a post that maybe helpful:

Mike,
The article you link to is related to a different directory than what we are talking about. That is C:\Windows\Installer in which I have 3.17GB. However, for some reason Logos has been creating tons of folders in our personal directory installer folder and they total 772MB on my computer. Or in other words every other program combined takes up only 4x as much space as L4/L5. Something is obviously wrong with their procedures although that might be fixed now and we can hopefully delete all the older folders.
Tom
Thanks for the clarification Tom! Will be following to see if this issue is resolved. I have 495MB in my personal directory installer folder.
Well, my 1.38 GB of Logos duplicates is gone (leaving 100 KB). If you follow my guidelines above, you'll be safe.
5 of my 8 folders in that drawer contain one of those "logos...icon" etc.
But the entire 'Installer" drawer contains less than 50 MB

Are you doing betas? Then the number of version installs will typically be higher than if a user is permanently on the stable channel. I found that this folder was 750 MB on my system and deleted the content (thanks to those who found it!).
Worked for me, too! Simply deleted those weird folders and then ran a registry scan using CCleaner to remove their registry attachments. All worked and works well. 495MB of space now available..woohoo [:D]

I had used another utility to get rid of 159 associated registry entries!

No - the latest one was so buggy that I scrubbed it from the system. That appears to have limited my extra folders.
