Setting Up Logos 4 for Original Language Study

I bought Original Language package of Logos to do my original language study (mainly because I am on a PC and don't like the BW interface). However, I have been somewhat disappointed in its capabilities in this area, so much so that I have often considered switching. Some of my complains include painfully slow searching at times, limited number of Bible with morphologies, and no well working mouse over system (for original language info).

It seems that Logos was designed as a resource library, but I am just not interested in having it to store devotional material, books, ect. Does anyone have suggestions on ways to configure Logos to make it better for original language study?

The best way to configure Logos to make it better for original language study is to (1) NOT use it as an interlinear and (2) keep the layout simple. I increase the font of the greek text to the maximum to make it easy on my eyes for reading. I read on the left and browse on the right with my lexicon.

In order to optimize Logos 4 for NT Greek study, you will need a good lexicon. Buy BDAG. Its easy to know if your passage is cited in BDAG by using Logos search function.

Notice that by searching for the passage I am reading (in this case Matthew 5:29) in BDAG, Logos shows me every entry in the lexicon which discusses my passage. Its worth shelling out the extra money for BDAG because it contains a treasure trove of information that is so much easier to access in Logos than in book format. You can also do this for a good grammar such AT's Robertsons. Search his grammar to see if it discusses your passage.

Once you get a layout, then read, read and read some more of the Greek New Testament. Only by reading chunks of the GNT will you get a feel for the language.

I have Original Languages (the one purchased prior to the present L5 one) plus quite a number of original language resourses added on. There's really two issues associated with your question.

(1) Use of mouseover versus the Logos information, explorer or powerlookup panels. Logos tends to favor the panels (which you attach to your greek or hebrew books for automatic lookup). This SAVES you constantly mousing around. Personally I prefer that; I can easily print it as well.

(2) Logos also tends to go for interlinears where it attaches quite a number of databases to the original text (the most recent being the 'sense' linquistically).

(3) Since as you mention, Logos favors large numbers of resources (even original languages), it packs most of its intelligence into the Bible Word Study. There, my favorites are the lemma, root, and the hebrew/greek cross-translation comparisons.

Of course much depends on what you're wanting (original languages). I tend to want to crossover between the NT-greek, the coptic and syriac plus Josephus and the apostolic fathers. Logos does the greek automatically for me; I have to inch along on the coptic and syriac. Similarly in the OT I like the heavy LXX/MT connectivity in Logos and also the hebrew vs inscriptions (interlinears).

You asked for examples. These are mine (I keep each language on a separate window, plus 1 window for lexicons/searches, etc.

EDIT: I'm just the OPPOSITE of Justin (above) and George (another forum member who hates interlinears). My personal belief is that modern earthlings are naive to think they can pick up original languages any better than they can pick up modern ones .... unless they were born there or spend decades in the details.

Searching a Collection of resources can be quicker than searching Entire Library.

Curious about search ? Logos wildcard search is slow so personally avoid searching for *.
