I removed the split-screen (same as described above), but I haven't been able to turn it back on. Help!

You should be able to turn it back on the same way you get rid of it - tap and drag the shaded half-circle to where you want the split screen to be.

There is no shaded half-circle on my screen anymore (thus the problem). The max column setting has been set to auto and 2, but stll no half-circle apprears.

What type of Android device are you using?
The max column setting is different from split screen. Max Columns is the maximum number of text columns that will be displayed if you have a lot of horizontal reading space. You may have a lot of horizontal reading space if you are using a tablet in landscape mode or have your reading font set to a very small font setting.
The Half circle should always be visible in the Reading view. If you have only one reading pane visible then it would be in one of the corners of your reading pane and you should be able to drag it to display the other reading pane.
