Highlighting with new version is A LOT slower (4x)

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone else was getting a slower response times for highlights/notes appearing with this new update. I have a notes file, "Romans," that currently only has about 40 notes in it and is relatively new. Before the update, my highlights would appear in about 3 sec. Now, it is 12-13 seconds. I really don't know what else to do to make it more responsive. If anyone knows of a fix/solution, please let me know. Thanks.

David - I haven't noticed anything like that. My primary suggestions are the same as always:

    1. Kill the app via multi-task bar
    2. Restart the device via a full shut down
    3. Reinstall the app

Just to clarify though... From your description, the note file doesn't appear to be an issue... What about the resource though? Small note files are important, but having many notes in a resource, even in different files, can slow things down quite a bit.

    Alabama,

I did kill the app and did a hard shut down...no difference. I did try highlighting in a different resource using the same notes file, and it is quite a bit faster. The resource I am having problems with is the LEB. Do you believe that ALL note files related to a resource are being sync'd when a change is made...not just the specified note file? Up until now, I have been deliberate in keeping different note files (e.g. Romans, John, etc.) knowing that I would have quite a bit of notes for a specific resource. What is the best practice to keep up performance for a primary resource like the LEB that has multiple note files?Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Dave

I don't really have a good answer for you. A couple of years ago I used the McCheney reading plan using my ESV. At one point highlights took well more than a minute to appear. Software updates made it much better... But it was still in the 25-30 second range. I'm not sure what Logos can do to optimize this better... Perhaps having the ability to turn on&off individual note files for each resource... But I think it's reasonable to utilize a single note file for a bible and to have highlights appear within a few seconds... It's been a while since I have heard from Logos on the issue... Which is likely due to my abandoning of new highlights in the ESV. FWIW - I deleted that highlighting file and switched to a new translation for devotional reading. I am worried about how long highlights will take by June. [:s]

    Alabama,

I share your concern. Honestly, up until this last update, notes/highlights appeared to be working reasonably well (although always a bit sluggish) but at least usable. Now, it really is very non-responsive. I do hope to hear from Logos on this issue and why this last update made such a big difference in performance.

Highlighting and notes should be a very seamless and responsive task for the reader. For whatever reason, it seem as though this area of the iPad app has been problematic. I agree with you that limiting what is being sync'd (e.g. the specific notes file that is being worked upon) would help with performance. From my experience, only changes should be sync'd, not entire files. In my example, the Romans note file is quite small, but it seems to be "bundled" with larger files. If this is true, this could be a huge problem going forward and limit any legitimate note taking in Logos in the future.

    Alabama,

I did a little more testing and found that the performance does not appear to be related to the note file size itself (like you indicated before). For example, a highlight using my largest note file "John" appears nearly instantly on a scarcely used resource but takes 12-13 sec appear in my LEB and 6 sec to appear in my FSB. Both the LEB and FSB have quite a bit of cumulative highlighting in them in various note files. If this is the case for everybody, any heavily used resource with highlighting/notes (e.g. the Bible) would bog down significantly over time. I do hope there is a remedy for this.

    Alabama,

It does look as though when I make a highlight the app wants to refresh ALL highlights in the resource instead of just dealing with the one I'm working on. If this is the case, it would explain the extreme sluggishness of highlighting. It seems to me that the highlight/note at hand should be sync'd and displayed immediately and then the interface released to the user. If the app wants to check other highlights in the background, so be it. Another solution would be what you propose, allow us as users to turn off certain note files for the resource so that it limits the number of highlights/notes that it wants to refresh. Just some thoughts.

David, I've noticed the problem too. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.
