Logos5 Biblical Language Base Package is here!!!

The Good News:

Finally, the Logos5 Biblical Language package is being offered via the WebSite here:

The Bad News:

Sadly, "you must be a student to purchase this product"

So, those of use who have the Logos4 Original language base package are left without a 'similar' Logos5 base-package to upgrade to, if we're not students. This type of marketing strategy doesn't make any sense to me at all, but I guess Logos' has it's reasons.

This true, but Portfolio also includes a lot of other stuff I don't need or want. The advantage of an Original Language base-package and now the Biblical Language package is that it offers a very streamlined library with primary texts.

I know that 'someone' claimed that the package didn't make money and that it confused users as to their upgrade options. But, I think the way things are is far more confusing!!! BK ... probably you put 'someone' in quotes since you're familiar with the 'someone'. But in defense of his analytical skills, making an HTM page is expensive work. You have to turn your PC on, spend probably seconds finding another page like it, and then maybe 30 minutes or so fashioning the non-sensical text that will hopefully tell the user nothing about what they're proposing to purchase (a key feature of the Original Languages package of course).

Now this is just the beginning. The inventory folks have to make sure all these files are 'in-stock' (don't want to promise and not deliver). Plus there's the accounting people to prepare for the off-chance that maybe one person not a student will want to purchase it. I mean it IS possible.

Now given all that expense, can you guarantee that purchase volumes would pay for it??

I didn't think so. Best to simply let the former Logos customers remain as such. It's just safer. Business risk is just that ... risky!

Now there's a deal, Tom. You're making my arguments more difficult.

But I have to add just one more thing in favor of Logos (for the $90 extra of course). Let's say you go through Bible college, and then it's time to try to find a home.

Don't you want to be able to say on your 'resume' that you use Logos, the Cadallac of Bible software?

I know churches in our area, that's one of the first issues they ask (knowing the limitations of BS, and the academic bent of Acccordance of course).

When we hear about the interviews, and that one of the young ones is not even using one of the 'top 3' ... well, the jokes probably don't belong on here.

Count me among those who would buy the Biblical Languages package in a heartbeat if it were made available to general public. Biblical exegesis is my primary use for using Logos.

Logos said that the Logos 4 Original Languages package sold poorly. One reason that I did not get that package is that eveything in L4 OL was included in L4 Gold, and I could afford that and wanted those additional resources.

I ended up getting L4 Platinum, and recently L5 Platinum. Yet, even with those packages, there are about 20 resources that L5 Biblical Languages has that I do not! I would like to get them, but upgrading to Portfolio (and even Diamond) is way outside of my price range for the resources I would get.

But the additional resources in L5 Biblical Languages not in L4 or L5 Platinum: LSJ, Thayer's, Waltke-O'Connor, Jouon-Muraoka, those I would like to have.

I think it is really ironic that Logos claims the OL/BL packages doesn't sell very well, and then Logos makes sure it doesn't sell by refusing to allow anyone to acquire it (unless they are a student).

My memory's probably guaranteed to be poor, but if I remember right the OL used to be around $450 or so? I paid around $300+ back in 2005-ish. So, looking at the plus ups, I notice the 2004 crossgrade, the Philo and Josephus cheapos, Brenton, plus the apostolic fathers and two interlinears (beyond the older OL). At $700+ is this really something you'd want?

I only say that since most of what I use is either replacements for the OL contents (e.g. HALOT/BDAG), better versions (eg the critical Josephus), and maybe the extra interlinears on LXX and apostolic fathers.

I only make this comment because I wonder if there a market for a quality OL that WOULD cost $700 or so? As a first-time customer, hard to say.

I would not purchase it for $700.

If memory serves me right I believe i paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $250, reckon that dates me..... then 0 to ND, then 0 to LE then 0 to KF then 0 to JG then etc., etc.

I think I might call sales and see what it would cost for this current package, only see a few resources that are different....ppsstt: i am not a student nor do I qualify as "non-academic discount people--"

Good question. Because, I've already required Logos4 OL and have much of what is in the new Logos5 Biblical Language Package there's no way I would consent to pay for it all over again! However, if it were offered as an upgrade option (that took into account everything I already have) I'd take it as I am more than sure it would not cost me anywhere near 700 USD. I was surprised when Logos5 was released and there wasn't an upgrade opinion for OL4 in Logos5 similar to it.

Personally, I just want the upgrade, which in my case would include less than 10 resources, if the list I've seen is correct. Basically, I'm just hoping for a really cheap way to get Joüon/Muraoka, Waltke/O'Connor, and a couple of others.[:D]
