Could Someone Explain the new "Active Layout" added in 5.0b?
Maybe this should be obvious, but what do the release notes mean by "added the concept of active layout?"

I don't find it intuitive even after beta testing it. The "explanation" in the Release Notes is
Added concept of active layout, which once selected is marked with a
check mark in the Layouts panel. This layout will remain active until a
new layout is selected or the program is restarted.
When you name a layout on the RHS (usually the snapshot that says "Save as named layout") it appears on the LHS e.g. Laptop 5.A. If you then click that layout on the LHS it becomes the Active Layout and its name appears in the main window Title bar as shown above. When you exit Logos the layout is saved as "Application Closed". It can be loaded on restart depending on the Settings you choose:-
A "local" layout is one saved on your computer whereas "any" includes a layout from another computer (whichever is the more recent). If you want to continue your study on another computer, close Logos and restart Logos 5.0b on the other computer. It will pick up the saved layout if it is set to load "Most recent layout - any".

Ok. The only thing I see new (besides the new screen) is the layout name showing in the title bar and more options on which layout to load at startup. Is there something else I'm missing?

While you have a layout open, it tells you what you are working on. I find this very useful. I have a number of layouts with some of the same resources open in each and sometimes I lose track of which thing I'm working on. This allows me to see at a glance.

I don't think you're missing anything... this is a step toward "restoring" L3's layout capabilities... we still need better protection on named layouts, however. IMO, the named layouts (on left) should not also appear on the right among the "junk" snapshots, thus being easily deleted when cleaning up snapshots to improve performance.
We also still would very much LIKE a command we could pin that will "Save Current Layout", one of L3's most powerful features...

Does pressing Ctrl+Alt+L (Ctrl+Opt+Cmd+L on Mac) to update the active layout (i.e., the one named in the main window title bar) to the current snapshot do what you want?

Thanks much for the response! I tried it, but I can't tell what if anything happened. After 3 or for times, the sync wheel spun a few times, but it wasn't obvious what got synced. Short of reloading the layout, how would I know what happened?
Also, what would I key into the command window so I could drag it up to the command bar & label it? What I really want is a button, since I use it so often...

Open a layout (it becomes the active layout).
Change the panels that are open.
Press Ctrl+Alt+L to update the active layout to the current state (snapshot).
To see that it had an effect, open the Layouts menu. Your updated layout should be the second one on the right. You can see that it has your layout's name and has a screenshot of the current state.

I don't think there's a command you can drag to the shortcuts bar. But you can press Ctrl+Alt+L... [:)] (I'll put in a request to have a command that can be dragged.)

Regarding our warning-friend's suspisions that threads are hidden by Logos, the software indeed might be frail. This thread disappeared on me. I went to Google to find it.
That Save-Current-Layout-Icon is just too precious to loose!

An advantage of Active Layout is that you can have many layouts with the same name by renaming others.
The layout on the LHS (left) is removed only when the last layout with that name is deleted on the RHS (right). A rule to only delete from the LHS might appear safe but it takes away some advantages. A popup confirmation would be more appropriate when trying to delete the last/only named layout on the RHS.

Though I personally don't need it on the right, I can see your point about wanting to remember what the layout looks like... So I could support your suggestion as meeting the needs of a greater number of users than mine. [Y] [H]

Which makes me wonder: why does typing update in the command box only come up with Update now, and not Update resources? I have to type all the way to update resour before the latter appears in the dropdown. Which means I have to already know the command in order to be able to use it.
I seem to remember the import commands have the same problem.

Dave, I'm afraid your post just makes me even more confused. Why would I want to have several layouts with the same name? What opens if I click in the left column? The last snapshot with that name? What opens if I click on a lower one in the right column? The 'snapshot' version, or the last version? What are these 'advantages' you're talking about?

You already get multiple "Application Closed" layouts with a different timestamp, which represent your layout at the time you exited Logos. I like to label them more accurately i.e. use the actual layout name, in case I want to revert to a previous version. It also prevents me getting confused between different named layouts that are saved as "Application Closed".

That sounds pretty sensible to me; I'm not sure what is gained by prompting customers to run commands they don't know about (and don't know what the effects will be).
The command box is not intended to be a generic command-discovery mechanism; the feedback is to indicate that you haven't made a typo in entering it. The commands are documented in the Help file.

The startup choice of 'Most recent layout - local' with Program Settings is really great. It allows me to easily work on my laptop with a minimal layout, and then work on the PC with multiple monitors and have multiple panes open. I now don't have to adjust the pane positions or choose different layouts when moving from one computer to the other, or uncheck 'use internet' just to keep them different.
Being able to globally disable community ratings and tags is nice too.

A command for updating the active layout will be added in 5.1 Beta 4 for beta users, and in general when 5.1 ships to the stable channel.
