Greek Question

I need to insert a lowercase eta into a OpenOffice document. The eta has a "half dome" diacritical mark over it. I have hunted and hunted in the special characters and cannot find this character ready made.

Is this a case where two characters are used to make the final result; the eta char. followed by the dome diacritical char?

And how is this done in OO?

unfortunately I don't know anything about Open Office, let alone its capabilities for Greek text. But wouldn't OO just display the text in the UNICODE font that e.g. Logos uses to display it? So copy paste from Logos (or from the free Logos-supplied Shibboleth where you can build your character with diacritical marks etc)?

Maybe a way to think over it, don't know if it helps.

Some fonts have it as a half dome, others have it as a squiggly.

If you have the Greek keyboard installed, type "[h" to type it.

Yes, but always the other way around: the main character last.

Unfortunately I can't help you any more than that; I have a Swedish keyboard and don't use OO.

OK, what I need is a lowercase eta with an inverted breve over it. The combination does not occur in the Unicode charts, so it must be a two character combination.

so...inverted breve followed by the lowercase eta? Now I just have to find the inverted breve in the Unicode charts and figure out how it is used in OO.

I'd think Shibboleth is probably the tool for you, as you don't seek the character from long tables but build it.

Thanks David. I got it now.

Just to close the loop and to fully explain to the next guy needing this information.....the program David suggested showed me what FONT group has the character I needed. I was using Times New Roman and the character did not appear there, and the combining diacritical mark method did not wok in Times New Roman either, presumably for the same reason.

I used Shibboleth to build the character I needed, then I took note of the Font group listed above and to the right of the character I had built. Then I switched fonts in OO for just that one Greek word to GentiumAlt and hunted for the character in the Special Character area of OO. No Unicode tricks are needed!! Just finding the target character in the right Font group is all that was needed and that is what Shibboleth did to solve the problem.

May want to look at LibreOffice. After Oracle acquired Sun, a number of Open Office developers went to LibreOffice. Wikipedia has LibreOffice article => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice

As stated above, you will not find the character I needed in the Times New Roman font. It is not a word processor problem - it's a problem of finding a needle in a haystack, and the software that David referenced worked wonderfully.

With the tool that David mentions, I think you could find any character in any language if they are in the Fonts that are commonly available - you're searching all the font tables at the same time!!

κῆπος is the word I was trying to build and if you look carefully, the eta has a inverted breve over it, not a tilde. When I look this word up in the Logos library, it has the tilde, but the book I am digitizing has the breve.

Wonder about changing font in Logos ?

Times has the breve while Times New Roman has the tilde for unicode character U+1FC6

See! It's a needle in the haystack problem. Its not enough to look through Greek, Latin, Extended Latin, Extended Greek, etc...you have to look through all of those in EVERY Font to find what you want. Dave gave us the scoop on an excellent tool to do this.
