Amazon has some pretty scary reviews. I am going to wait.0 -
I would check out all the reviews. This link only takes you to a very small number of 1 star reviews. Most of the reviews are 4 or 5 stars. Incidentally, I cannot agree with any of these 1 star reviews from my personal experience.

Steve & Orpheus,
What is the battery life like? Do you find that it is limiting your plans?
0 -
Hi Darren,
I have not performed a run down test, but from my experience, I am probably getting around 6 hours. Following a full charge, the Windows battery meter tells me I have over 8 hours, but I'm not sure I believe that! My main use is Logos Bible study and reading (in the lazy boy!), and it is certainly fine for that.
Best,
Steve

I am wondering if anyone is using Logos 5 on a Windows 8 "budget" Tablet effectively? I like what Steve says about the ATIV but its way too expensive.
Anyone else running the full Logos 5 on a tablet say under $600 - with a pen to be used for highlighting (ideally)?
0 -
Joshua,
I have Logos 5 installed on a Samsung ATIV 500t, the Atom-based 11.6 inch tablet. While there are many positives to this tablet, running Logos is not one of them. The biggest problem for me is the lagging when trying to scroll through a resource. It is painfully slow.

Thanks Bill. I first saw the machine you mentioned and it sparked my hope that Logos 5 would run well on it or something similar to it.
I know there are many places where Steve's machine is reviewed online but I just found this one:

I am hoping someone has had better luck with one of these and will weigh in.

There is a good review of the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro W700T on Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/21/samsung-ativ-smart-pc-pro-review/
This is the Core i5, 4GB, 11.6inch. HD screen, 128GB RAM model.
Just a comment I think supported by many: don't buy an Atom based, 2GB Win8 tablet if you want to run Logos 5. Even with a correctly powered Win8 tablet, Logos 5 in the desktop mode on the smaller screen may not be to everyone's liking - the fully feature Win8 version will be the Logos to fully take advantage of the new operating system and hardware.
Hope this helps someone,
Richard.

Lets hope God answers our prayer for affordable hardware in Tablet form that will run the full L5 well and efficiently and (gulp) cheaply.

I took back the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro W700T. It ran Logos 5 very smoothly. Personally I think the keyboard was better for the navigation than the stylus. Very clear text. But for me personally, the problem was this: the tablet has its weight in the tablet itself, behind the screen. So, when connected to the keyboard, it is top heavy and was constantly falling over. Even with it placed on a table, using the touch screen was an exercise in gentleness. I found myself holding onto the keyboard when touching the screen to keep it balanced. Agreed you can use the trackpad on the keyboard only, but when switching to other apps e.g. Evernote or Google Drive, or the internet when doing research, the machine wobbled precariously. Other than that the specs were very sufficient for the task. The Microsoft Surface Pro has a wonderful built in kickstand that would alleviate the problem, though you would probably need to use it on a table not your lap. It undoubtedly would be great for some, but not me. Back it went. I am now trying out an ultraportable non-touch laptop. We'll see how that goes.

While the MS Surface kickstand is useful for holding the tablet in a stable position while using it with the attached keyboard, I found the angle to be too far forward to facillitate using the screen in touch mode (fine for view mode). If the angle could be varied we might get the best of both worlds (touch and keyboard). There are two types of keyboard available for the MS Surface, I found the touch cover required enough additional effort to get each key to operate (compared to a conventional keyboard) that it significantly slowed the way I type and constantly required proof reading to make sure all the letters had registerd. Have not found anywhere locally with a more conventional type cover in stock yet, so have yet to have the opportunity to try that one. Also have not yet found anywhere with a Pro with 128GB Ram in stock and the 64GB model has next to useless amount of memory left straight out of the box, so seems pointless trying that with Logos 5 and other applications let alone any significant amount of books, data, photos or music.
Perhaps a different keyboard for the Samsung, with perhaps even an additional battery in it to help prolong usability and stabilize the screen part may help sway me towards a Samsung. Not convinced either is quite there yet. Maybe it is still a case of needing to wait until we get a little more user experience feedback incorporated and maybe even move to a 256GB standard and a more reasonable price (under $1000 WITH all the add ons like video adapters, keyboards and stylus). As they say, wait three months and the whole picture will likely have changed.

I'm looking at a Asus Transformer Book. It has an Intel i7 processor with 4G ram, 128G solid state drive in the tablet and a 500G hard drive in the keyboard dock. http://transformerbook.asus.com/#home
I am a pastoral student focusing on missions and think this will be a great option for both the ease of use of the tablet plus the full functionality of Windows 8.
Anyone have a thought or suggestion?
0 -
Does it come with a pen?

Pen - active stylus.
0 -
I tried the Surface Pro and the volume rocker at 100% couldnt be heard. The machine heats up easily and is too heavy for me. I couldnt test Logos 5 on it. Too pricey for me too.
0 -
Mr. Morrison...my heart skipped a beat imagining your transformerbook might be a good selection for us all. Have you tried it yet with Logos 5. Does it come with an active digital pen (??). Anyone got a decent review of this option anyplace and a low cost to go with a positive review yet?
Blessings,
Joshua

Where do you buy this in the US? Is it available yet? What does it cost?
0 -
It's not on the shelves yet, but it can be Pre-ordered for $1495. It seems a bit pricey, but if it does what it states in the reviews, it will be worth every penny.
The Asus Transformer Tablet does not come with a pen. The best I can find is that it does not have active pen support. I don't know how much that will effect it's use. I use a stylus on my iPad and that's OK for me.

too rich for my blood. I looked around the internet and found the price you said as well.
my wife would divorce me if I paid that price for a piece of technology.
I wonder if its too ridiculous a prayer to ask that Logos make a touch friendly full function app for Windows 8 and then tell us what budget friendly hardware it runs on?
Lord here my (silly) prayer.
May YOU Father be glorified forevermore.

This is not the one I have. I have the Samsung Ativ XE700T1C-A01US Smart PC Pro 700T. This one has an aluminum keyboard which is much heavier than the tablet that plugs into the keyboard. Due to the center of gravity, it is impossible for the combination to fall over backwards during normal use of finger or stylus selection. This was a problem on the earlier version, which Samsung worked hard to fix. As I've said repeatedly, I use this machine all the time, and have no complaints.

We seem to be seeing today a significant price drop in the 250GB SSD (by Samsung and by OCZ). Hopefully this will quickly translate into the broad availability of 250GB tablets running Windows 8 Pro so that the restrictions of much smaller SSDs (with a full Windows Operating system and recovery partition taking most of the space) can be finally eliminated.

Hi Steve,
I took the plunge and ordered mine today. Your rave reviews have won me over. I like the size & weight, screen res, the digitizer, everything looks perfect except the RAM and SSD, but it sounds like it's still more than adequate from your description.
My library is a bit smaller than yours (~5k resources) so it looks like it should have enough space for the moment. I was wondering if you removed the recovery partition(s) and if you did what procedure you used? Or did you find you had sufficient space, leaving them intact?
Another alternative I'm seriously thinking about is going ahead and upgrading the SSD to 256GB. From what I've read it looks fairly simple to swap in a new SSD. The Crucial 256 GB or Mushkin 480 GB ($$$) seem to work well according to the thread here:
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/samsung/54457-ativ-700t-question-anyone-open-unit-yet.html
I just wish there was a way to upgrade the RAM. This thing would fly!

Shayne,
I would not worry about the 4GB. I too had my concerns, but the Ativ is super quick and slick running every app I threw at it - not many agreed - but enough: Logos 5, Google Chrome, OpenOffice, OliveTree Bible. I had no problems whatsoever. I did not keep the machine long enough to determine if the 128GB was large enough, but it does have an SD slot for additional storage.
It seems from other posts that I might have received an earlier version or at least a different one from the US version in that mine was top heavy and touching the screen would make it unstable. I believe Steve Charles has given the specs of one that is better balanced (sorry Steve if it was another poster). Logos worked a dream on it with the stylus input.
Yes, I did return it and have replaced it with a MacBook Air 11.6inch - and totally love it. My first Mac - and for me - it is the best Logos study tool I know of. But that is just my preference.
Incidentally, there are a number of articles for the MacBook Air on how to increase disc space, e.g. removing the foreign language fonts from the o/s save 1.9GB and removing the printer drivers for printers that you will not use, removes another 1 or 2 GB. You might want to research that for the Ativ.
God Bless,
Richard.

Hi Shayne,
Now I'm really on the spot! No worries, I believe you will really like the tablet. I did not remove the recovery partition. That said with all the software I have installed, I still have over 30Gb free on the SSD. I also have a 64Gb microSD card which I use for files, and this works fine. I've been thinking about putting a 256Gb SSD in as well. Samsung has a cool imaging app which takes an image of your system, which I believe could be used to put it on a new drive. Also, don't worry about the 4Gb of RAM. I can run multiple applications, including 64bit Photoshop CS6, and everything is at least as fast as my work machine, which has 8Gb.
Best,
Steve

Thanks Richard & Steve. I appreciate the feedback. I'm feeling much more confident with the decision. Hopefully, I will receive the unit tomorrow (along w/ 64GB SD Card, an extra full size pen, and case). Can't wait to play with it! I think it might be a near perfect Logos device.
Looks like some people have hit little glitches trying to remove recovery partition. I will likely leave it and if all goes as well as I expect, and if I can pop the back easy enough without breaking it, I will likely go ahead and order the 256 GB drive. (How much you wanna bet that they'll release a 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD version within next month or two?)
Hm, hadn't got around to thinking about putting Photoshop and Lightroom on it. It might make a good platform for touching up RAW camera files when away from the desktop. Might even be easier, interacting directly with the image.
Thanks again for all the info. Looking forward to laying hands on it tomorrow.

Anyone use that Acer 510 successfully? I cannot afford these expensive machines every one is touting.
Thanks.

How is it as an ereader and can you highlight in it easily? I sure wish I would have one.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors Tablet is resonating in my head now.[:)]

I have not used the 510, but I have used for 2 or 3 days an Asus tablet running Win8 with a similar Atom processor and 2GB RAM. My conclusion is "Don't do it". It is super slow to an unusable level. Also Logos 5 running in the desktop mode under Win8 does not allow you to touch into dialogue boxes e.g. to input a scripture reference. You need the active stylus of the more expensive Win8 tablets. with a keyboard and a trackpad, it would be navigatable.
Hope that helps,
Richard.

Richard,
That ASUS tablet you mentioned that runs Win8, is it the Taichi model?
Thanks.

It was the ASUS VivoTab Smart ME400C 64GB 10.1. Spoke to Asus and they agreed that the Atom processor is low cost and does not have the power for intensive applications. Having said that it ran Windows 8 apps very nicely.

Hey Steve,
Just wanted to drop back in on this thread and say THANKS! I'm still getting to know this tablet, but I think it was a great buy. I was originally set on the Dell XPS 12 because I thought I needed something beefier, but I was wrong. This tablet handles Logos very well; I've observed very few page faults - ie. no excessive swap usage. When it does fault and need to page memory, the speed of the ssd negates most of the penalty usually seen when swapping. She's got plenty of speed. Also weighs quite a bit less than the Dell tablet I was looking at, though still a little on the heavy side. Screen is lovely, and the battery life is adequate (a keyboard dock with extra battery would be great). A little large in the hands which is good on the eyes, but takes a bit to get used to wielding it. The pen that comes with it is ok, but I really like the full size pen purchased separately. Picked up a generic case, hoping something better will come along soon.
It would be the perfect portable platform for the full Logos app if they could make it a bit more touch friendly, even if it's just a wee bit here and there along the way.
Overall, very very happy with it. Appreciate all the experience and info you've shared.
Thank you,
Randy

I have just purchased and test driven THE case for the Samsung Smart PC Pro 700T. It's the IVSO® Slim-BOOK Stand Cover Case for Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro XE700T 11.6-Inch Tablet available from Amazon. It's $16.95 with free shipping. It fits the tablet perfectly (finally!), and you can also remove the stylus while the tablet is in the case (unlike most others). This is the one ...

Has anyone noticed any announcements of new Windows 8 tablets that might give the Surface Pro and 700T a run for their money?

Joshua,
I realize I have responded to a number of your posts about tablets, but I have to jump in on this post in particular. When I first looked at the Surface Pro in the stores, I thought it was way too hot. I dismissed it out of hand. However, after reading up on the heat issue online, I learned that many users said the heat became acceptable and battery life went up when you adjusted the advance power settings. So, I went back to the store to see if I could experience what these users said. When I adjusted the advance power settings on the Surface Pro in the store to about 30% brightness (still plenty bright) and throttled down the CPU speed to about 30%, I was pleasantly surprised that at after giving it a couple of minutes to cool down the Surface Pro's heat was at an acceptable level for me. And, the battery life increased. And, the performance was not affected at all.
So, the moral of this story is that when you look at the Surface Pro in the stores realize that they have them cranked up to operate at the highest brightness levels and CPU speed.
These are not required for real use and are certainly not required for Logos to run well.

Thanks for that Steve. I hadn't seen that one yet. I noticed Samsung put up three new sleeves/cases for it a little over a week ago, I think. I've been waiting to see some reviews trickle in on some of these that are finally starting to trickle out. Really looking forward to getting a nice sleeve for it.0 -

Dell has an XPS 18 Tablet => http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-18-1810/pd that would not need 150 % magnification of screen icons.
Personally watching for 4th Generation i5 and i7.

The number or one star reviews is less than ten percent, which is fairly typical.

I absolutely love my Sony Vaio Duo 11 - it's a tablet/laptop hybrid with an Intel core i7-3537u 2.5GHz, 8g ram and 256gb SSD. It comes with a digitizer pen. I chose the Duo 11 over other flip style hybrids due to it's stability in an upright position.
Sony now has a Vaio 13 out that uses an Intel 4th gen chip.
Logos 5 works like a dream on this machine. No lag time and everything is always available, unlike using an ipad.

I have a new Dell Venue 8 Pro 64gb with 2gb of RAM. Logos works well in desktop though the initial indexing took a long time. I installed Logos on the SD Card and put all the books there.
Seems to be working well but can't wait for the stylus, etc.
Now the Logos App for Windows 8 is just sad compared to the Android App. Hope there is work being done on that.

Russ, I feel for you. You are brave to dive into Windows 8.1 with so little ram too.
Noone at Logos really seems to care about developing touch Windows 8.1 Tablet capability...thats how it seems to me [:'(]
