Downloading en masse to iPad. Is it possible. Collections offline reading.

I searched the iPad threads but can't find how to download in blocks. I searched for "Archaeology" and saw a button to "Download All."

  • I want to download whole collections at once: Reformed Dogmatics
  • I want to download a whole bundle at once: Archaeology Bundle XL
  • I wonder if I can download all my resources to the iPad. I have a 20GB library and a 64GB iPad

I am new to the iPad but am adapting quickly. Please pardon me if this has already been answered. I searched the forums but only found old (outdated??) posts.

You can… but you shouldn't unless you absolutely need to.

    1. Sometimes the best fix is to delete the app. This will cause you to lose everything.
    2. Library searches are performed online, so having downloaded the resources doesn't make a difference.
    3. I can't substantiate this claim, but I believe the app and your iPad would just perform worse.
    4. When resources get updated, you must manually update them if they are downloaded. Sometimes problems occur if you don't do so.
    5. The app wasn't created for you to download your entire library.

I don't believe you can download collections, or bundles, without doing a little bit of work. If you were to add a tag to the collection or bundle, you could filter the library and perform a "download all." Use the syntax: mytag:yourtaghere and press download all.

I did this on my iPad, and I'm not sure what it has gained me. I do have all my books on the device, so I could get at a book even when offline, but you have to know what you want since you can't search. The thing that bugs me the most is that when I open the app, it still takes thirty seconds to initialize and show me the last page I had open. Seems to take just as long as if I were downloading a bit of the book.

William - What gen iPad do you have? How large is the HD & how much free space is left? I'd be interested to know if your experience lines up with my assumptions...

I just want to use the iPad as a reader.

I think I am beginning to understand why downloading thewhole library is a waste of time.

I find that I can search when offline - what I can't do (and this is an issue whether online or offline) is that I can't specify precisely the resources I want to search. It is only possible to select from a restricted choice of resources. Being able to choose collections or individual resources would be a big step forward in searching

I do see this behaviour and agree it is very annoying - again this seems to happen when online as well.

Downloading the whole library isn't something I would do.

However, I have downloaded 366 resources - so there is maybe a "part-way position" on this.

The resources I have downloaded are - broadly:

    • Bibles I use regularly
    • A number of commentary series (this is the bulk) so that I can access a number of commentaries when offline. I don't do this frequently but it is good to have them when I want them
    • The resources on my "ToRead" list so that I can access them (and keep up with Reading Plans) even when offline

    Hope this is useful

I don't think I have that many, but I agree with the logic you used for the resources you downloaded… and I do similarly. I only typically download general commentaries however, and individual volumes as needed.

I have a 3rd gen iPad (first retina model) with 64GB. My Logos library takes up about 21GB (~4k resources) and I have ~22GB of free space.

That's interesting. Last time I tried searching was at a Bible study almost a year ago and I could not complete any. I'll try again and see if it's different.

Yes! I should have been clearer about that. It happens to me regardless of being online or offline. Just took a look now and it took about 15 seconds, which feels like much, much longer when you're just trying to open up your Bible.

I feel like I was able to circumvent it once, by going to other parts of the app (like the library) and then coming back. But I haven't had enough motivation to try and figure it out exactly. I suspect they just block viewing of the book while the app initializes.
