Confusing Behavior for Resources Loaded on iPad

Background:  iPad3, iOS6.1.2, Verbum 3.2.3.  I have all resouces in my library loaded onto the iPad.

The basic question is in regard to the behavior of Logos for resouces in my library when connected to wi-fi versus not connected to wi-fi.

Connected to wi-fi:

     - tap on a link to a resouce in my library

     - a portion of the resouce comes up in a small window

     - there is a option to "jump to resouce" from there

Not connected to wi-fi:

     - tap on link to resource in my library

     - receive "not availble" message (for some resources - even though the resource is on the iPad

Some resources the tap and link works fine.  Others do not.  All resources are loaded on the iPad.

Any thoughts as to why I would not be able to tap and link to a resource loaded on the iPad based on whether or not I was connected to wi-fi?

Can you give specific examples of resources and links?

Yes.  Allow me two posts please.  First example...Catechism of the Catholic Church linking to John Paul II Evangelium Vitae 56.  In the first screen shot wi-fi is connected.  In the second screen shot, no wi-fi.  Screen shot taken secons apart form each other.  No difference of behavior based on which was first or second.  When I was connected, I got the linked resource.  When not connected...not available.  Both resources are loaded on the iPad.

    1st screen shot: (working)

    ---------------------------------

    second screen shot: (broke)

Second example of a resource that works regardless of connectivity.  Same source, Catechism of the Catholic Church, tapping on refernce to Luke 23:4.  First screen shot, connected to wi-fi.  Second screen shot, not connected to wi-fi.  Works in both circumstances regardless of sequence.

    Connected to wi-fi:  (working)

    --------------------

Not connected to wi-fi: (also working)

As you can see, different behavior based on whether I am connected to wi-fi or not, even though I have the resources loaded on the iPad.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional detail.

    Blessings,

    Steve

Are the non working links all non-scriptural? I'll have to take a look at this when I am on my iPad next... It may be that the app is depending upon the Logos servers for this info, which would explain the error.

After some additional checking for this reource (Catechism of the Catholic Church) only I can confirm that it appears it only works for scriptural references "off line".  I did not look acrcoss other resources in my library, so I would ot be able to arrive at a broader conclusion.  For this one it does appear that your statement is correct.

I have some additional "navigational" challenges within this resource based on whether I am connected to wi-fi or not.  I'll send them in two posts.

Here is the first.  I'm trying to tap on a link for paragraph 2308 which is within (internal to) the resource:

First screen shot, connected to wi-fi: (working)

    ---------------------------------

second screen shot, not connected to wi-fi: (not working)

Now the second challenge.  Same resource, again.  Cathechism of the Catholic Church.  I am attempting to "jump" to a specific paragraph within the resource by referencing the paragrapgh number in the command box at the top of the screen.  I type in the paragraph number and tap "Go" on the keyboard.

First screen shot, not connected to wi-fi: (not working - does not move to the requested paragraph 101)

    ------------------------------

second screen shot, connected to wi-fi: (working - jumps to paragraph 101)

In summary, the navigational/linking abilities of Verbum/Logos are significantly reduced on iOS when it is not connected to wi-fi, even though the supporting resources are available on the device.  Especially difficult is basic navigation within the resource itself.

Editorial comment: This handicap makes Verbum/Logos for iOS unusable as a study tool when not connected to wi-fi.  It's an e-reader at best.  I usually have to take my hard copy books with me anyway because I don't always have wi-fi avaible to me when I get opportunities for study.

    I'm a little bummed out.  [:(]

I guess I should have paid a little more for the iPad that had built in telecom wireless capability with the added monthly data plan.

    Blah.  [:S]

Do you have a cellular phone which you can configure as a portable wi-fi hotspot?

Just wondering if this would help as a temporary measure.

    Thanks Graham,

Perhaps someone with that capability could test and post the results back here.  I won't be able to do that for this exercise.

I'm just mildly irritated that the application makes limited use of locally stored resources.  I'll get over it.

Maybe this could be a future enhancement.  Seems like it would be standard behavior, but there may be technical challenges to implementation.

    Blessings,

    Steve

I've just tried this - in a different resource - and confirmed that the position doesn't get updated when not connected to wi-fi but it does when connected over a cellular phone hotspot.

The hotspot approach should provide the same functionality as a wi-fi network but the speed will be limited by the bandwidth of your cellular connection and will use up some of your allocation (assuming you have a plan with some limits)

Thanks again Graham.  Nice to have independent confirmation of the behavior.

how do we get this raised to Logos as an enhancement/wish list item?

This suggestion was closed on the uservoice forum, stating that it is already finished. I posted a comment on the page, but I am reposting here to try to get some feedback on the state of this:

I still get this error all the time on the latest version of the Android app, although I have noted that at least occasionally now links between books work.
Is this something that is going to be further implemented over time? Or maybe there was some confusion regarding the suggestion? The error is the "Not available" popup that normally is shown when selecting a link to another book while offline.

I've just done a quick test on my Android device and it worked - but as you mention it may be specific to particular resources.

Suggest you flag this - with details of specific resources which show the problem - in the Android forum so it can be looked at there

Here is a specific example that currently doesn't work. As mentioned, some links do work currently when offline (before none worked), so progress has definitely been made.

In BDAG, open to λυχνος. The definition has an introductory paragraph, at the end of which is a reference to "Ant. 3, 182; 199". When connected, these links work. When offline, "Not Available" appears.

Maybe if someone can test this on the IPad and see if it works there. For the moment I am continuing the discussion here simply because it is the link referenced on the UserVoice forum, and it may well be that the problem is common between Android and iOS.

I've just tried this and it works fine on my iPad

I've also tested it on my Android phone and it works there as well - running 4.2.9 (Build 246). What version are you using?

What is the resource info for Josephus? I have

    LLS.6.40.2

Glad to hear it works for you. Hopefully it is something that has been fixed in the beta versions.

I am using the latest stable version of the Android app, Verbum 4.2.8 (Build 244).

Josephus resource info is the same as yours.

I would again encourage you to raise this in the Android forum as this issue was reportedly fixed in 4.2.8 (as per Release Notes at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/84682.aspx)

Edit: It's also possible this is a Verbum specific issue. I was testing in the Bible! app - I don't have the Verbum app on my Android device.

I wasn't directly involved with the fix for this, but as far as I know, it should be working. As Graham said, if there are specific examples of links from one downloaded resource to another downloaded resource that don't work when you're offline, please post them here so we can check it out. I'll ask Kevin to double check the example you already posted, but it sounds like it's working for Graham.

Thanks, Drew. Either way, I'll follow up as well when the stable Android app is updated to the next version, hoping that was what made the difference for Graham.

Sounds good. I expect this to be fairly soon (probably in the next week or so)
