NKJV and CPU use high

in trying to deal with program responsiveness I have notice that when initially opening the NKJV there is a large CPU usage that lasts for quite some time. (100% for about a minute on a 1.8ghz core2 duo).

When opening with other bibles ESV or NASB (these are all interlinears) the CPU usage is significantly less and for a significantly shorter length of time.

NKJV is my preferred Bible so this is a regular issue for me.

The resources opens and is available but the CPU usage continues to be high for an extended amount of time.

I have noticed that other resources have greater issues than others. Webster's dictionary 11th is very slow.

Trey, if you are willing give this a try I will try and help you. Start by rebooting your computer (I want to find out how many applications are running by default)

When the computer comes back on and the curser stops spinning Press (ctrl + shift + esc) this will open the Task Manager the bottom left will have Processes #. How many processes do you have running? I have seen everything from 15 to 350 if you have 300 processes running in the back ground you could have the best computer in the world and peak your CPU.

Next on the Performance tab of the task manager click “resource monitor …” it will ask you for admin permissions click continue. Now I want to know how the CPU % with nothing running. If with no open applications you are running at above 30% than one of the background processes is doing too much.

Then open Logos record if you would the peek when Logos opens and then after it has finished loading. Now from the home page click library and open the NKJV what dose the CPU do peek and then after it is loaded.

Peek CPU % while opening Logos _____

Final CPU % after Logos opens _____

Peek CPU % while opening NKJV _____

Final CPU % after NKJV opens ______

Another possibility is that you have resources linked to the NKJV that are not linked to your other books if this is the case than the issue is not with NKJV but with linking if so then check this out...

Most likely, there are several background processes that could be running this could lead in a drag in scrolling. First check the link set of your books you may have several bibles linked together so when you scroll in one it is scrolling in the others. You could also have several commentaries or other books linked to your scripture so as you move through the scripture it is trying to fallow along in those other books. you may have the passage guide. This would be searching through your whole library for passages you are scrolling through. Finally Exegetical guide following along this would be loading a side by side comparison in the original language. Needless to say if you had it linked to all of these resources your computer is working vary heard to scroll through a passage.

I did check all of these things before posting this information.

If you are trying to keep some stats, I have about 60 processes running and they are at 0% CPU usage.

I do not load the program with the Home page. I try to run a relatively lean efficient machine with as little as possible going on in the background.

If the program loads with the NKJV in the layout then CPU usage goes to 100% for about 60 seconds then drops to nothing.

If I load with another Bible open (ESV and NASB with interlinears tested) CPU usage peaks at about 70% and for only a few seconds then goes to 0% after about 10-15 seconds.

If I then open the NKJV or toggle to it with right or left arrow. the cpu usage goes to 100% for about 60 seconds.

After it is loaded initially it does not do this.

There are no visual filters loaded, no linking sets used, no passage guides loading,etc. I removed all of these things before testing this resource.

It is possible that this has been repaired in the beta. Dave Hooton indicates that he does not see this particular issue in the beta, so it is likely the problem with this resource as been addressed there.

It was not so much a concern for me that I posted this information, it was for knowledge to the Logos team to give them possible issues to address to help with the system wide performance issues. I really didn't say there was an issue with scrolling just a peculiar issue with the CPU usage for this particular resource.

I installed Beta 2 and I am still seeing this unusual CPU usage with the NKJV Bible.

It only happens the first time it is accessed after startup.

Either when a part of the opening layout (I don't start with the Home page) or the first time it is accessed. (right or left click from another bible).

If I start with the ESV opened there is a smaller and much shorter jump in CPU usage. 70% peak but up and down for about 10 seconds.

The NKJV pegs at a full 100% for right at 60 seconds.

Win7 64bit 4.0a Beat 2 I use the resource monitor to observe this.

Congratulations you are running a pretty lean PC I have about 88 processes taking up 2% memory

On my PC it to 7sec to open Logos and NKJV with a peak of 70% for under a second

7sec to open Logos and ESV with a peak of 70% for under a second
7sec to open Logos and NASB with a peak of 90% for under a second

NKJV 14.5mb, ESV 14mb, & NASB 20mb

Ok two computers is not a standard for troubleshooting however, I would narrow this issue down to one of two things it is possible that the NKJV is fragmented on your drive and not on mine ant that is why our numbers are different or they updated this resource and I have the new and you have the old. Regardless there is only one thing you could do and that is to defrag your hard drive (with Logos closed so that file is not locked)

Windows 7 defrags automatically...

This is an intriguing issue; I too can't replicate it (Win7, L4B2)

Trey if you're familiar with Resource Monitor; under Processes, sort by 'Image' so the names stop moving and select the check box next to Logos4.exe; this will give you an orange line in the graphs below the green total CPU usage graphs. Now click across to the disk tab; and you'll see Disk Activity is filtered to only show activity relating to the Logos4.exe process; now restart Logos4 and when it's settled down open your NKJV, compare to when opening another bible - anything unusual happening?

Win 7 defragged it but I ran defrag before testng just to make sure of that possible issue.

Also, I ran update resources and there were no new resources downloaded.

Running beta 2 and the same issue is occurring.

I can duplicate it on two laptops that I have they are pretty much the same.

Lenovo x200 Tablets - one has a slightly slower porcessor. Win 7 one beta 2 and the other Sr-7

on my desktop (a much older P4) this does not occur.

So, it may be a hardware issue with the laptop(s).

1. Open L4 with NKJV already open (from last layout NKJV only resource opening)

2. L4 Open and settled with empty layout. Then Open NKJV

3. L4 Open to an empty layout and settled. Then open NASB

3. L4 Open to an empty layout and settled. Then open ESV

Go figure! I can duplicate this on a very similar machine just a slower processor.

Wow! Thanks Trey. You have helped find a root of alot of my performance issues. I always have at least one NKJV with interlinear open all the time. I suffer from cpu spikes and slow switching between tabs.

I tried switching to the ESV with interlinear - opened several tabs and switched quickly between them. The result?

1. Instant switching between tabs

2. Very low cpu usage:

With the NKJV with interlinear opened in several tabs - switching quickly between them got the following results:

1. About 4 seconds to switch to a new tab.

2. Cpu spikes to 100%

Very interesting bug. This could explain why people with similar systems are having such conflicting performance results.

On my laptop the first spike is NKJV opening and the second is NASB95

A few seconds only, but NKJV does take twice as long (the little spike in between is accessing the Command bar to open NASB).
