How to create my own translation of the Bible and import it into Logos?

Dear friends,

I am quite new to Logos but I have been working quite for some time translating a Bible into Polish... basically I am half way trough. I wonder if some one could give me some indication how can Logos help me out more. I was able to import my documents as Personal book but I wonder how can Logos help me to be able to check my self for consistency in my translation? For example when I import my Bible and I create my personal book it does not have the little window where I could simply type the verse and it would pop up like the other Bibles in the program...

Hi Sacha, and welcome to the Logos forums!!

I assume you're familiar with the wiki on Personal Books: http://wiki.logos.com/Personal_Books

And the easiest way to answer specific issues is to look at previous examples: http://wiki.logos.com/User_Contributed_Personal_Books (1611 KJV is a good one for formatting).

I'll be interested in any replies concerning the foreign language aspect, since I plan to do a Japanese sort-of-interlinear 'real soon now'.

Be sure you are setting the Type to "Bible" in the Personal Books tool.

Thank you for your answer, I took Matthew from contributed Books and i see that when imported it, it did create that little window... so I am not sure where I am making a mistake... I guess must be something with formatting...

Well, Sacha ... the next best step is to take a small piece of your Word file and upload it and maybe we can see the missing piece? Judging from the behavior, Logos isn't finding the chapter and verse numbers in your docx file (which need to be specially marked as you're probably already doing).

I would be happy to upload or send you a file if this is what you meant. Where can I upload it? Yes Logos does see my chapters that is not a problem Logos also sees verse hyperlinks for example Rut 1:2 recognizes correctly and I am able to link it to othe Bibles...

there is another problem that when i search my source, after the search nothing is disiplayed. It seems like logos is searching and then just momentarily disappears..

Hi Sacha. To upload the file so we can look at it, just click on the little 'paper clip' icon. It's located just above where you're typing on your forum messages. After you click on that, just find the docx file and upload it (hopefully not too big!). Chances are, there's a small slip somewhere.

Ok ... Sacha, I think the solution is pretty easy. You're missing what Logos calls 'milestones'. These tell the Logos software that you want a user to be able to go to that location (thus a window at the top), and also if it's a Bible, Logos will automatically create your menus for you.

Below is a screen-copy of that Mat KJV1611 that you loaded. If you scrolled down to the verses, notice that each verse has a special tag:

Here's an image of your docx. Whereever you see a verse number, you need a tag, like the above.

Finally, from the wiki.logos.com reference above, here's the text on it. It's not too clear, but you can match it to the first example:

If you can't see these images between the 2 dots, use Internet Explorer and click on the little icons, and you can see them (Logos is having trouble with PNG files).

And oh by the way ... your work looks great!

On the search, I'm not sure what you're searching for. A verse? If so you'll need the tags described above. If you're searching for polish, I have to admit not knowing the answer to that.! (Sorry!!) Hopefully someelse can answer.

Usually after you create a PB, Logos indexes fairly quickly, and then a search will work.

Basically what I would like to do is to be able to "check myself for consistency" in my translation, let say I translate a hebrew word DAL as a poor man in one book so I would like to be sure that in all other instances I also used such translation... any thoughts how to achieve this? Ok ... I went ahead and loaded that docx file you posted above. It seems to search ok. When you searched, did you look in 'My Books' (Personal Books)?

The easy way to do what you're talking about is (1) make sure you compile your docx with the tags we talked about (2) compile as a Bible. Then do your Hebrew search but in the second column instead of an english Bible, select your Polish Bible. I don't have a Polish docx with tags to show but here's my normal pairing below:

I'd assume, as you do your translation into Polish, that the hebrew will have several Polish words matching it, depending on the context.

I assume you're on a PC or Mac? The 'search' is local to your PC/Mac. It doesn't go to the internet. I'm the suspicious type and keep my PC's wifi radio turned off, when not using the internet. And the search works fine. Are you sure yours isn't the same way?

Regarding the '10x' you just click on the very tiny arrow in the far left in your search box (in order to use the arrow keys, which I like to do). Or simply click on the heading of the resource (in my example, SESB hebrew OT). It is possible that a single verse will have several instances.

If I'm misunderstanding your question, please let me know.

'My Books' refers to your own created books (PBs). 'My Content' (I think) is notes, etc typically in documents. I don't use them; most people do.

The tiny arrows in a search panel are usually on the left.

If still struggling on the search, maybe you might save a screen capture, and upload it?

Yes, a picture a best! You're probably using the 'Ranked' view (see image below; right circle area). When I was explaining, I was using the 'By Title' view. Only the 'By Title' view has the litte arrow (left circle below).

Now I think that I am starting to understand where to find the search!!!

It might help to see an example (Spanish) bible with full definition of bible text because you can;'t use Bible Search & searching within books (e.g. Ruth, Genesis) until you tag bible text, to separate it from Introduction, Content, Headings, chapter & verse numbers.

For more sparse tagging see this ASV 1901. Also note that {{bible-on}} is the same as{{field-on:Bible}}
