Another Wearisome Bug? This time -- Print / Export

In Logos 5, I am attempting to export / paste into an open document, say MS Word, Logos' Greek-English Interlinear (Swete).

It formats correctly before "print / export" is attempted, but after I try to export / print to file, only one part of the Interlinear is exported -- namely, the first line in the Interlinear, which is obviously not the interlinear I seek to print / export.

What's the story here, Logos? Another bug?

EDIT; I think I got it now. If you want the lemma translit and ### then you need to mouse-drag and highlight the verse, r-click. choose 'selection' then 'copy' then go to the docx and paste.....if you are using the 'copy bible verse' w/to Microsoft word then all you get is the original text....

If all you want is the sept. text then Ctrl-p, if you want more copy/paste, what is it that I do not understand?

I know that when you hit ctrl-p, you see everything, but that Logos- slightly deceptive, because you do not get it in the docx, - BUT - if you want what you see in the docx c/p. sounds wrong but that's the way it is. Unless you can tell me more that's all I got.

I just did another more careful search of the forums, and this Print / Export inoperable "feature" has been mentioned and complained about many times by many people over the past few years.

Looks like bugging Logos about this bug (intentional?) won't do much good.

Microsoft Word does not support interlinear text display, so we don't have a good way to export interlinear text to it.

I believe we tried a hack in the past where we created tables of just a few words per line, and exported those tables to Word; would this meet your needs?

Would it? Yes, indeed. Say in MS Word landscape mode it would work fine. But either way, there has to be some way to export Bible passages from Greek-English interlinears so the content appears formatted and in good order.

Also, it would be nice to have the cells formatted so the words are not truncated.

Please get it done, Logos, this is a much-needed and long-overdue feature that I'm sure your programmers could bat out in an hour or so. Consult Luke 6:30.

Thanks Bob, for the reply. Truly, this has been an issue from way back "in the day". But 2013 has made some improvements that maybe need a slight peek into, but then not everyone has 2013 so there may still be an issue. I was grateful enough to get it for a 10.00 bill.

Altho this may not be in the queue for a priority, but for the sake of convenience, I do appreciate the effort[as well as many others].

What do you mean, Logos Copy? Do you mean select with mouse, control C, then in MS Word paste?

Sure, some is copied, but the number of columns is irregular, some of the cells truncated, and it becomes a subsequent nightmare to format.

There has got to be an easier way to copy Greek-English Interlinear material into say MS Word with the formatting intact ala the print / export preview windows which looks great but sadly doesn't work.

I guess I'd have to see the problem. Right-clicking in Word allows adjusting the 'columns' and 'rows' far better than the Logos export preview.

By the way, for anyone following the discussion, the interlinear copies into Excel neatly, if you're needing straight-out rows. I didn't know that either. For me the 'wrap' had been a headache earlier.

Also the paste goes into RTF code pretty neatly (today I redesigned my RTF coder to accomodate the Supreme Court texts, so this works too).

The Print/Export functions (copy and >Word, RTF, etc) don't work with interlinears oddly enough. The copy that Dave mentioned does but mainly MS products (Word, Excel, not Wordpad, etc). The latter is also easily re-formatable.

What do you mean the latter is easily re-formatable? No it's not. (I think you mean the former, namely Word and Excel, right?) After copying and pasting into MS Word re-formatting (a necessity) is a nightmare.

If Logos had some gumption they would help out its loyal but beleaguered customers and provide a means to print / export / copy and paste, whatever, so the Interlinear passages exported look like Interlinear passages.

But don't hold your breath. Logos works at glacial speed when it comes to such matters, sorry to say.

Let's take a close gander at Logos5 interlinear to truly appreciate the layout 'before' copying to Word:

- Columns nicely lined up similar to our roads in our canyon

- The verse reference carefully blanked out in the reference box (been that way now, going on 4 years)

Now, let's compare to the 'other company' (Libronix) with the exact same resource and verse). You'll notice why I always copy from the 'other company' (carefully ignoring the actual content differences):

So let's not encourage them to make the Word paste as good as the original. That'd be a step backward.

here's the same verse I used I turned on the grid-lines so you can count, that's all I did to the text, I COPIED the highlighted text then opened word2013 and PASTED, the paper orientation is 8.5x11 portrait, and I used swete - where's your screenshot?, lets have a look at these statements.

Ok tf ... this is Eze 16.15 from Swete:

In the example above, I drew borders (similar to Excel), and did some backgrounds. I also could have changed the font size and so forth.

I think R4M was hoping for screen shots from you on MS Word to try to understand what is driving you up the wall. Maybe we could help.

Now please keep in mind in my top white-background example above that the same greek word repeating in the 2nd column, when in point of fact it's supposed to be 'english' in 2 of the rows can NOT be blamed on MS Word. It's that way in the original. So in this specific example MS performed; Logos didn't.

So I probably want to repeat that the pastes you are arguing for need to be better than the original.

EDIT: Relative to your question above, the column count is relative to whatever columns I have on my Logos side ... it depends on the size of the window and I put my font size to smallest on most of my resources. This could be why I have trouble finding the footnotes. In Excel it doesn't wrap. So if you want a long run of columns it be better to paste to Excel and copy that back to Word.

No it's not. The output should be doubled. The screenshot gives you the illusion that it's fine, but half the page (not shown) is empty.

But my question was in your copy-from how many columns are showing in Logos? I get the impression Logos is 'row'-ing the copy. Alternatively, Logos isn't, since it's a single row in Excel. Somewhat of a mystery. Interestingly my MS Word side is always 12 columns before a new row. Again, in Logos, I have the smallest resource font size.

No, this is where you are wrong, because if you were right, then there would be more users speaking here in the thread. But, we have understood that this is not our most important feature that we would like, altho we would like it to function better. You have shown that it is not defective but more than it just doesn't Do what YOU want it to DO, right? But in essence it does do what you want it to do, it is coping a bible verse and exporting it to a word doc.

Isn't that what it does?

Most of us realize that the function does work, and there are probably Most of us who would like it to function better. But this does not stop us from doing what the general program is to do - Study the Scriptures, not whinn about a print issue, which you are leading into. If it stops you from working the program for the purpose of the program - then I would understand the whinning and crying - but I don't/?

Of course, the same verses could be copied and pasted into MS Word, but -- at least in my case -- only about six columns (often less) can be copied, hence half the page is unoccupied, so to speak. Yes, it's unsightly and a waste of space, but it's not a matter of life or death, still ...

Perhaps it's time to move on to another more pressing issue, since this one seems to be going nowhere fast.

Have you tried exporting to .pdf? That seems to work fine on Mac:

Also, have you tried what Denise has several times suggested to you: make the panel as wide as possible and move the font slider to the far left before copying. That should give you more columns than a narrow panel with bigger font size.

This is getting pretty positively weird. It exports to PDFs correctly and copies to Word (though we don't understand the columns limit). But it doesn't 'Export' > Copy to Word.

This sounds more like a bug (which I think was the OP title ... yes, I see it on my browser's window title).

EDIT: Which, by the way, is interesting (formatting the interliner in Word). I used my spiffy new RTF/raw-text switch on my Bible software to look at what Word copies from itself. The 'table' formatting commands look virtually the same as HTML and are surprisingly elementary.

I don't have any problem printing pages from the Interlinear from the Print/Export dialog; can you be more specific about what "can't be printed"?

The ability to Export is limited (by necessity) by the capabilities of the target program. Microsoft Word doesn't have interlinear functionality, therefore, we can't export an interlinear to it. (Interlinears also won't be exported to RTF or plain text files.)

As Bob posted earlier, we "fake it" by copying tables (in the Ctrl+C copy code, not in the export). A limitation (of Word, not of Logos) is that you can't easily rearrange these tables after the export.

When the Ctrl+C copy code was written, we didn't have an Export dialog (Copy was in LDLS3 and Export was added in Logos 4). Since copy in Logos doesn't know what type of document you're going to paste into, we have to guess at the output width; I believe it was chosen to fit on a portrait letter page with one inch margins. Unfortunately, if you're pasting into landscape A3 with 1/2in margins, there will be a lot of wasted space (as you have seen). It's not really possible to code up a solution that works in both cases.

Now that we do have an Export dialog, it seems that a compromise solution could be to use the size of the page selected in the Export dialog to control the width of the copy when using the table-based approach. You still wouldn't be able to adjust it in Word after exporting, but it might come a lot closer to filling the page. (Potential downsides would be that changing the margins in Word after the export could wreak havoc on the document, and the exported text would have very limited editing capability.) This is already on our "future feature" idea list, but is low priority.

My apologies for prolonging this long and tedious thread, and albeit this is a feature of "low Logos priority," and though I undoubtedly will risk provoking the wrath of certain Logos apologists on this forum, try the following:

First, select the Lexham Greek-English Interlinear (Sweet),

Second, select Print/ Export,

Third, select say Job 42,

Fourth, in the preview window the verse(s) appear formatted correctly in rows of six, though as you said, the margins are too wide (in the preview window, that is -- if you change Print Properties to A4 Landscape you get two columns, side by side),

Fifth, export "Copy to Clipboard," and (try to) paste into MS Word, and what do you get:

Only the verse(s) are exported, not the interlinears (parsings, lemmas, etc.), hence, this feature is just that, a non-feature that should be indicated as such. (Unless I have inadvertently turned off an option that causes this problem.). It does not work as advertised, sad to say.

Next, try Export, Paste into open document (such as MS Word) -- result: same, no interlinear, just the verses.

I realize getting it to work is a programmers' challenge, but it seems to me this Print / Export is a feature that if it worked as advertised would enhance Logos' useability, esp. among scholars and pastors, to name a few. It's not as I said a matter of life and death, nevertheless...

Just a thought. Perhaps it is time to move on to more pressing issues.

I am not meaning to sound like a Logos apologist, but I am not sure how much more clear Bob and Bradley could be in their responses. Printing the Interlinear through Logos works fine. Exporting it to MS Word does not. They know about it; Bradley explained what the problem was and it is on the list of future features, however it is a low priority.

It being a low priority is fine with me as there are other features they are working on I would like to see released long before I would ever need to export an interlinear to MS Word.
