If I upgrade to Logos 5 (for Mac), does that mean the app for the iPad (original) needs to be changed?  iPad is running v 5.1.1 and I don't believe that can be updated/upgraded to a newer iOS without going to a more recent iPad model.

Logos for Mac and iPad are completely independent of each other. Upgrade to Logos 5 on your Mac and enjoy. There will be no effect to the operation of your iPad.

    Janis,

I currently use a 1st gen iPad and it's running v.5.1.1 the most up to date Logos iOS app is compatible with that iOS. I personally use the Verbum iOS app because it integrates Faithlife and has the ability to run a limited Bible Word Study Guide and Passage Guide (the Faithlife app does not). So you can use any of Logos mobile apps running that iOS.

But as was stated earlier the desktop apps and mobile apps are different.

Wonderful!  Now to figure out the difference in packages (comment posted on another section) compared to resources I already have.  Not easy.

There is a "new to you" feature, which makes it easier:
